Doesn't it strike you as a little odd to say, basically, "Well, *I* believe that people have a right to privacy in their sexual acts and reproductive matters. However, since this other person believes differently, I feel perfectly fine violating this person's right to privacy in this case"?

It strikes me as odd.
And, in fact, JUST like the people who believe that free speech is only for people we agree with.

They're registered at the Mug-Shot Saloon, the only business of any consequence in the shithole town that Palin used to be mayor of.

@4 Actually, YOU strike me as odd. You're not as stupid as your "argument", are you?

The Jews believe that they should be able to live according to their beliefs. The Nazis believed that they should exterminate all Jews. Therefore the Jews shouldn't have complained if the Nazis lived according to their beliefs?

Guess this makes you a troll, then, doesn't it?

This campaign has everything. Instead of a Rose Garden wedding, we get a shotgun wedding at that Pentacostal church out on Spenard.

Dan,
Wild weekend for news huh? First Sarah Palin's VP announcement, then Hurricane Gustav and now Palin's daughter Bristol is pregnant. Happy Labor Day!

Yeah, the pregnancy is problematic for the McCain campaign. I do believe they knew about it. The benefits of McCain's choice have paid off already. Obama's was mentioned only once on the front page of Saturday's P-I. And, there was no mention at all of him on today's front page of the paper. And, according to CNN, there was no effective poll bounce benefit for Obama after the DNC.
The coincidence of Gustav's landing just might benefit the McCain campaign. Both Bush and Cheney aren't appearing at the RNC which will negate any photos ops with McCain (i.e. guilt by association images). Also, the curtailed RNC downplays the appearance of anti-war/anti-administration protestors in St. Paul. Too many journalists are covering Hurricane Gustav.

As for Bristol's pregnancy, what's the campaign to do? I doubt Palin will withdraw. I say "proceed". Weather both Gustav and the media storm about Bristol's pregnancy. It's essentially two months until the general election. If the pregnancy is unproblematic health wise and carried to term it will happen after the election.

Sure, it's uncertain how evangelicals will react and liberals will blast away at the ineffectiveness and money thrown at abstinence only programs. But, I believe the McCain campaign is correct to call this a private family matter. Bristol isn't the first nor the last daughter of a prominent politician to get pregnant out of wedlock. Hey this is just a different take. Happy Labor Day Dan.

Look -- I don't really know if Levi Gourley, the 25 yr old single hunk from Wasilla is indeed the daddy of Bristol's baby -- but someone should calll him and at least ask.

@8-
No, it makes you not very good at understanding what other people mean.

If people have a right to privacy in our society (which they do), then EVEN Republicans and their children have a right to privacy, EVEN in matters of sexuality (which makes this none of our business).

That's all.
Your discussion of Jews and Nazis is more than a little bit irrelevant.
Have a great labor day.

Palin would much prefer to answer those questions than the ones she has been getting:

Internet bloggers had suggested Trig was actually born to Bristol Palin but that the Alaska governor claimed to be the mother to avoid the controversy. The McCain adviser Mark Salter said today's pregnancy announcement was made to rebut these rumours.

@13 Oh, no -- I'm all upset because you told me to have a great labor day! Who can debate with that?

Maybe you really do believe what you're saying, which is scary but not shocking, sadly.

Here's what's going on: The Palin family is in the public eye. Sarah Palin put them there. She wants to dictate what happens in your private life. For all these reasons, her private life is forfeit. Not hard to understand.

She wants privacy? Don't be a public servant and don't try to tell other people what to do. And don't be a hypocrite when you do. Oh, and don't lie, too.

You're welcome. Oh, and you have a great Labor Day, too. Inset eye roll here.

five months preggers... this being the end of aug, first of sept... math says she got knock-up around oh, late march, early april. So she is in her second trimester, or beginning of her third. Its very hard to get an exact date of conception, but, God willing, it is possible to have a second kid with a month or so turn around. Will little one be carried to term, or 'miscarry' within the next 3-4 months?

these waters of history in the making are murky...

A lie to save face... not very Christian (palin claims to be VERY religious), telling fibs and lies and whatnot, but it would be human nature for a parent to want to protect her (under age) daughter from religiously motivated politics with a "white" lie.

or the other side of the coin...

Risking the life of an unborn child to get 4000 miles to a trusted doctor... trusted doc or not, it is not very good parenting (or a good human being) to forgo treatment in Houston, Anchorage, even Seattle

(Palin is a bad human being because she could have gone into labor on the flight, causing a diversion, emergency landings, and delays in her fellow travelers' trips. Palin both showed a lack of concern for her fellow travels and the safty of the 'child' in her womb. Elected officals need to show concern for people... Imagine the march 2008 headline "alsaka gov starts labor in tx, plane lands in portland for emergency transport to hospital. Hear from fellow passengers TONIGHT ON ELEVEN AT 11)).

So, for you repubs...

Why should a small town mayor, now gov who has not finished her first term, who never faced a reelection, not be put under the same microscope as others? Mccain and Obama have been in the national scene for years, we the public know them. We the public do not know Palin and unless we follow the local-for-alsaka news (for which we the public do not, we follow local-to-where-we-live news), we do not have a history with the Palin person. Palin has not been making a very good impression since the VP announcement.

@13, 18 etc.

It's not Palin's status as a public servant that forfeits her right to privacy, it's her beliefs and actions in office that prevent other's from having legally protected private lives or culturally relevant education in the public school system that make this issue pertinent to the public.

And, though I understand your point, I really wish people would stop using the holocaust as a metaphor for any and every thing they are trying to explain.

Phenics, Palin has done nothing BUT lie, and not just about her daughter's baby either. She lied when she claimed to have said "no thanks" to the Bridge To Nowhere; she was in fact a vocal supporter of it. She lied when she denied putting any pressure on the DPS head to fire her former brother-in-law; her family stalked the trooper, filming him and filing dozens of reports on him, and her office applied pressure to fire the guy 20 or more times, including one that got on tape.

She's a lying sack of shit, and she's barely qualified to run a dinky toilet town in the Alaskan mudlands, let alone be the backup to a doddering old president of the United States. She's a nothing, a joke, a fraud, a TV news bimbo who wears glasses to look smarter. She makes Dan Quayle look like Winston Churchill.

Consider this. Sarah Palin informed the world that last friday, was her 20th wedding anniversary. That means she was married Aug. 29, 1988.

Her oldest son Track was born April 20, 1989. That's less than eight months after Todd & Sarah Palin were married.

Seems like a then 24-year old young woman with Palin's desire for the spotlight (sportscaster, Ms. Alaska pageant, etc.) and traditional values would have opted for a big traditional wedding but instead she surprised folks and eloped.

hhhmmmmmmm ... with the news that the teenaged Bristol Palin and her "boyfriend" Levi are expecting a baby, seems like the cycle simply repeats itself?

top on my list is the bounty of $150ea for the left paws of killed wolves. Oh, nearly slipped my mind, polar bears are not endangered, I guess in her mind they migrated south or sum-thin. All so oil could be drilled in ANWAR. Nice of the polar bears.

And her whacked out "belief", the oh-so quaint, oh so circa 2003 neo-con meme, being stuck on global warming not being human-made. Hasn't she seen The Inconvenient Truth?

Dan,
I just found out now why Sen. Obama wants the media to "lay off" the Bristol Palin Pregnancy story. He was conceived out of wedlock (just like yours truly). At least I think so according to the bio snippett on Ann Dunham, his mother. Barack, Sr. and Ann Dunham were married Feb. 2, 1961 and Barack Jr. was born Aug. 4, 1961. I can appreciate his candor and response. It would be unwise for liberals and the media to dwell on this story too much as there are other ways to attack the McCain/Palin ticket.

lark - this crap has nothing to do about Obama

it is the mob yelling for blood in the streets of Paris during the Terror or hunting Witches in New Salem

they will do harm to Obama and not care a whit - they have the need to be mean and self centered - striking out in petulant anger

It really is shocking, big blog site after big blog site - group think to the max

And Obama has to apologize for them, so sad for him to waste his political capital

Laura Bush is now speaking out, warning of sexism from Obama supporters - she is funny to these people - but she has the highest ratings of any First Lady of modern times

These blogger hot heads have made R's the voice of reason - amazing. Kisses of death.

Why do they have to get married? Isn't that compounding one tragedy with another? Why not give the baby up for adoption? They could spin the hell out of that. Instead of having an abortion, my daughter has decided to give the baby up for adoption. A 17 year old getting married to the boy she got pregnant with. True love, Alaskan style! I do here there are 10 men for every woman, so this kid lucked out it would seem.

#33 - I most definitely agree. Getting pregnant at 17 is enough, she doesn't need to get married on top of it.

@ 29 - No one is going after the children. The point is the hypocrisy of the adults. Obama doesn't have to answer for his parents' actions; Trig doesn't have to answer for his parents' actions. The point is that Palin preaches one thing but both she and now her oldest daughter live another, while expecting to be given a pass because "we're all sinners". That's bullshit when you try to legislate other people's morals but don't live up to the ideal yourself.

How come no one has commented on Dan's sexist & misogynistic comment that Sarah Palin won't have time to be a proper VP because she'll be caring for an infant and planning a wedding? Does anyone ever bring this up as a problem for the father? Hell no. I'm sick of Dan's misogyny. I thought The Stranger was supposed to be progressive,... but apparently that only applies to gay rights. I've read nothing but shit on this blog since Palin was picked.
