Shorpy
I’m currently obsessed with this endlessly awesome blog called Shorpy, which features beautiful, high-res photographs from 1900-1950.
Thought you should know.

Welcome to the Shorpy Party! It's worth checking every day. For sure.
Posted by Eliza | September 19, 2008 11:56 PMWeirdly, reassuring that whole "Jerry and Iane" thing had already played out on film way before my own plageristic life.
Posted by Zander | September 20, 2008 12:10 AMI loves me some Shorpy, oh yes. I'm particularly fascinated by the super-saturated color photography (1940s through 1970s) they will occasionally feature. Of course, the b&w is classic.
Posted by Jay | September 20, 2008 2:04 AMDamn you, Anthony Hecht!
This is one of the most visit-worthy web sites I've ever seen, you have the guilt of wasting more of my precious life on this fantastic trove of photos.
Be sure to click on 'view full size', the resolution of prints made from glass negatives is breathtaking.
Posted by Karlheinz Arschbomber | September 20, 2008 2:05 AMthis is amazing! thank you!
Posted by jayme | September 20, 2008 5:55 AMI love this blog for the really old photos. The newer ones of someone's (geeky dude in glasses) family get tiresome after a while, however.
Posted by Gindy | September 20, 2008 6:39 AMGeeky families, tiresome? Never. But I also love, love, love the 40s and 50s Kodachrome slides, scanned huge.
Posted by Fnarf | September 20, 2008 7:35 AMAdd another amen to the choir! That site is the bee's knees!

Posted by wosound | September 20, 2008 12:50 PMYou can also friend Shorpy on Facebook, which has the amusing side effect of occasional status updates like "Shorpy is playing stickball" or "Shorpy is down in the mines" or whatever.
Posted by leek | September 20, 2008 2:17 PMI love Square America. I'll have to go check out Shorpy. But don't forget Sepiatone: http://enotaipes.blogspot.com/
Posted by mike in oly | September 20, 2008 3:01 PMYes, that is a shameless plug for my own blog.
Most of the photos on Shorpy are pulled from the Library of Congress online photo collection-check the original site out. Your tax dollars at work!
Posted by rufusjones | September 22, 2008 6:43 AMAnother long-time Shorpy lover here. Good work, Anthony.
I'm also proud to say that Shorpy exposed me to the photography of Louis Wickes Hine, of whose work there was an exhibition at the Whatcom Museum of Art. I drove up to Bellingham with a friend to check it out, and supported the museum and local economy by hitting Boundary Bay afterwards. Go Shorpy!
Posted by EmilyP | September 22, 2008 8:55 AMand don't miss the recently retired, but awesomely archived blog extension of Square America.... The Boat Lullabies
