Seattle’s Own Hooverville

Unknown.jpeg

In the wake of John McCain saying that “the fundamentals of our economy are still strong” and all the world pointing out that Herbert Hoover said nearly the same thing on Black Thursday in 1929, Bar Exam went to Seattle’s own Hooverville-the-bar this week. Found all around Hooverville-the-bar (which has $10 pitchers of Rainier and free peanuts): evidence of Seattle’s burgeoning homeless problem (which is looking to have increased a lot more than 15 percent over the last few months). The shabby camper-encampment under the West Seattle Bridge seemed especially sad until I came across the shelter for men 50 and older.

Now we’ve got our own official non-bar Hooverville: Nickelsville. Here’s a little more in the P-I. The homeless living in the pink tents in South Seattle are being evicted by the city at 5 p.m. today. More from Nickelsville after the jump.

Thursday, September 25

Come by Nickelsville

7115 W. Marginal Way SW (Southeast corner of the

intersection of W. Marginal Way and Highland behind

a small parking lot. Or take the #23 bus and get off at

Highland)

2:00pm construction begins of more permanent

items built from wooden pallets and other recyclable

materials. Help Nickelsville residents build their

own new Seattle neighborhood.

5:00pm the earliest possible time cops might

and forcibly remove the residents. Come and

stay overnight in one of the empty tents (bring your

own bedding) or come any time and stay as long

as you can.

Call the mayor 206-684-4000

Tell him to cancel the bulldozers.

Let Nickelsville stand! 206-684-4000.

Background

Seattle officials have posted a notice indicating their

intention to sweep and destroy this new self-organized

encampment of pink tents that’s now home to almost

90 previously homeless people. As the economy

crumbles we need creative solutions such as Nickelsville.

The Bigger Picture
It’s also an opportunity to say NO bailout for the banks!

Don’t give seven hundred billion dollars to the rich!

Use the money to create a federal job program. Use it

to house people and cover their health costs. Use it to

guarantee pensions. Use it to raise the minimum wage –

just don’t give it to the Wall Street speculators.

For some (Freudian?) reason, I thought this said "Hooterville".

I am confused are the homeless trying to raise money and awareness for breast cancer? Kind of a homeless-a-thon.

When I saw this I thought of Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Thanks for covering this. At least the food columnists can cover for the news department when they drop a story!

4 days late but oh well - i guess the armpits and pitbulls were more of an action item there at 'work'. We understand.

Given that the Hoovervilles of the Great Depression were named for the incompetent president largely responsible for allowing their creation, we should really update the term and call this "Bushville".

Also, I think it is positively criminal for city officials to exacerbate the suffering of homeless people by forcing them out of a place without giving them another place to stay. These people deserve to be treated with compassion rather than being treated as pests.

@7I'm not positive, I only was paying attention to this story as background noise when the local news ran it, but I think Nickels is sending social workers down there and offering rooming for all the homeless there.

The shelter beds the mayor offered are nonexistent. Ever try to get into one? You'll be in a line with 20 people with 5 beds available on the coldest nights.
