Three readings and an open mic today. At Elliott Bay Book Company, Harry Rutstein reads from Marco Polo Odyssey, in which he retraces the steps of Marco Polo, who you may remember as the inventor of the hilarious and fun pool game. The book has a lot of maps, also. Later at Elliott Bay, Larry Beinhart reads from Salvation Boulevard. I took the book on a Lunch Date last week. As I said yesterday, I eventually abandoned the book due to lack of interest. But Beinhart is a weird guy—he wrote himself into the novel that eventually became Wag...

Paul,

What's so "weird" about writing oneself into one's writing? After all, Jonathan Raban wrote himself into Surveillance (granted, it was an anonymous cameo, but still), and, lest we forget, Paul, you've been guilty of it yourself.

You're not calling Jonathan Raban and/or yourself "weird," are you, Paul?

@3: Howdy Jeff,

Well, I'm writing non-fiction, for one. And for another thing, you'd have to read American Hero to get how completely weird it all is. I've read lots of fiction where authors write themselves in (Christ, Anne Rice is one of them and she's like the antithesis of weird) but I've never read an author...believe it...the way Beinhart seems to. Trust me.
