McCain's map won't look like this, since even in a landslide he'll win the Deep South and Texas. Hilariously, he could conceivably lose AZ, which would make me very happy.
In fairness, McGovern was unpopular and in trouble regardless of his choice of VP. He would have lost anyway, even if he'd have picked an ideal VP as his first choice. Perhaps not that badly, and the scandal certainly didn't help, but he didn't loose solely based on botching his VP choice.
