Re: Good Morning!

Sad as the racial bias numbers in that article are, my disgust was compounded by these findings:

Three in 10 of those Democrats who don’t trust Obama’s change-making credentials say they plan to vote for McCain.

and

Nearly 17 percent of Clinton’s white backers plan to vote for McCain.

Of course, most of these people are probably the same racist fucks who won’t vote for Obama because he’s black—they’re just pretending it’s because they just love Hillary soooo much, or that they just don’t feel like Obama will change things enough, so they’d prefer to have things change not at all.

On the bright side, cell phone users may return a couple of those lost-to-racism percentage points back to Obama.

I *LOVE* how absent from all these "racist white fucks" discussions by the liberals is ANY discussion about the 90+ percent of the "racist black fucks" who are voting for Obama.

Answer me this "Absent" would YOU vote for a black person, or ANY non-white candidate?

@1 - Minorities supporting fellow minorities in gaining access to the halls of power after centuries of being denied that access is hardly the same as the members of majority race refusing to vote for someone they would otherwise see as qualified simply because of NEGATIVE attitudes they have towards that person's race.

I've seen no evidence that black people are voting for Obama because they think all black people are great, or because they have bad perceptions of white people. They're voting for him because he deserves to win AND because it's a historic moment for their race. The fact that they might live long enough to see a black president is surely a big motivating factor, but I've seen no evidence that they're supporting him out of sheer racial bias. Have you?

I'm white, and I think it would be fantastic on many levels to have a black president. Given a choice between 2 equally qualified candidates, one black and one white, I'd probably vote for the black guy because breaking the precedent of white leaders adds value. That might make me "racist" by a strictly literal definition of the term, but we all know that's nothing like the people represented in this poll.

@1,

Your argument certainly explains why black people vote for black Republicans in droves. Idiot.

Given how many Blacks supported Dems in the last few elections (hasn't it been around 90% or more?) I think the more interesting measure of racial bias in the Black community would be a Republican candidate. Not that this would qualify as racism anyway (power=key).

But really, I think the huge difference is going to come by age. And how many people under 30 have a traditional land line these days? Most of my (generally graduate-educated, professional) friends don't. I personally suspect that the young are much more excited/invested about this political season because for the first time we're seeing a candidate we like more than tolerate; most of my friends who have never donated money before have done so in this campaign, they've followed the polls like never before, and especially if the polls are close I think there will be a massive unexpected turnout among the young. This is why I'm OK with falsely close polls, actually.

I honestly think that young people were, in some ways, waiting for someone to ask them to get involved. Kerry and Gore didn't seem to care one way or another about reaching the young. It was all social security and hawkishness; nothing about healthcare or life for the actual troops fighting the wars. No one ever asked me to donate money before, and they weren't interested in my $50 or $100. Obama asked. Nobody asked me to volunteer. Obama asked. It makes a difference.

AFtD, are you talking about those "racist black fucks" who are willing to vote for--and who do vote for--white candidates in every election? The ones who, even as they vote for a black man for president, will also be casting votes for white candidates--for senator, congressman, governor, etc.?

Face it, there are "racist white fucks" who have never--and will never--vote for a black candidate, period. And, of course, they'll never have to, since most white voters have the option to vote for a white (or at least non-black) candidate in any given race. (A rare exception was the 2004 Illinois senate race.)

"Racist black fucks" who refuse to vote for white candidates, on the other hand, are called non-voters.

My mother was going to sit out this election, not because Obama won over Clinton (though she is pissed and blames that on sexism), she was going to sit out the election (she would rather not vote than vote for a Republican) because Obama chose "another old white guy" as a running mate. Really, Obama? Another old white guy is the best you could do?

However, Mom is going to vote and she will be voting for Obama. Want to know why?

Sarah Palin. She hates everything about her. So you should be thanking John McSame, because I doubt my mother is the only Hillary backer who feels the same way.

The racists-hate-Obama and people-with-no-landline-love-Obama stories are different beasts entirely. The fact that racist voters say that they'll be voting for McCain means that we can blame them for the fact that this is still a close race rather than a blowout. It sucks, but we knew all along when we nominated the man that his race would drive some people out of the Dem camp. Those racist voters admit that they'll be voting for McCain, so the state and national polls are taking their open racism into account.

The fact that cell-phone-only voters say they'll be voting for Obama means that the polls are all wrong, and that in fact Obama is further ahead than it seems. (Maybe by 2.8%!) Taking the cell phone effect into account puts Virginia, Ohio, and Nevada firmly in Obama's camp, and makes Florida a tossup. It means that the likelihood of an Obama win is 78.5 percent rather than 71.5 percent. This is a reason for greater optimism.

The interesting, troubling and pessimistic question is whether the cell phone effect is balanced out by the "Bradley effect" of people who tell the pollster that they'll vote for Obama, but who will vote for McCain in the voting booth out of some vague, unspoken unease about black people--racism of which they aren't even consciously aware and so which cannot be polled. If there are any psychology lab tests out there that shed light on this question I'd love to see them, though I wonder if Obama's singular and post-racial character helps lessen the effect compared to what any other black candidate would face.

But African Americans have been voting for white men for president since they've had the right to vote...can you blame them for wanting to do something different?

I ask anyone, troll or rational human being, to explain why would they begrudge African Americans who also believe in Obama's policies this opportunity?

And I ask anyone to explain if a white person is a Democrat why would they use this election to swtich allegiances?
