Slog - Comments on Poppy Opens!

Poppy, the much-anticipated new restaurant from former Herbfarm maestro Jerry Traunfeld, opens tomorrow. It is not, as errantly reported here, in the former Jade Pagoda space—it's a few doors north where the old Elite (and a Vietnamese restaurant) used to be. It's spacious and looks pretty. Here's a representative menu of the thali that'll be on offer. EXCITEMENT....

I admit, the description of the items all sound delicious, but what exactly about this menu qualifies these as even pseudo-Indian cuisine? Just because they're served in little metal cups? Thali-style, perhaps, but seriously, does the picture in the post REALLY compare to this, for example?

@2: that's the point, from what I've read. It's more about thali-style, rather than Indian food. In fact, Traunfeld had specifically said that the food will not be Indian, that he was more inspired by the presentation and the idea of a thali and wanted to transcribe that to a different style of food.

Sooooo, that means - what? It's more like tapas, but served Thali-style, and prix fixe as well?

Um, okay. Where I come from, we'd call that "a mule that thinks it's a horse."

I am going to give it a try. I live about a block north and have walked by the remodeling of it (and the construction on that end of Broadway) for months now. It is now to see the Poppy, er, bloom. I anticipate fine service and tasty fare.

I am also eager to go to Vivace once it opens as another coffee option besides the always great and perfect Joe Bar.

In the old Elite days, there was parking behind the building, quite handy and free.

Check it out. Pricey for Bwy. at the moment.
After 500 more units of housing are full, the demand should be greater.

My taste is simply good NW seafood prepared with fresh ingredients and little seasoning. Oh well, pan fried oysters at Mc Cormicks on 4th ave. are excellent - 20.00. Well done, very fresh and rich and filling.
