What a wonderful live he lived. Inspiring. We can't all be movie stars, but he raced cars, he built a charity, he went to town with what this life gave him.

Also, he was just so beautiful.

Gorgeous, wonderful man. I love this quote from the nytimes write-up:

"December 1994, about a month before his 70th birthday, he told Newsweek magazine he had changed little with age. He and Joanne Woodward were neighbors of Gore Vidal a long, long time ago. He'd published The City and the Pillar, and all the attendant scandal of his homosexuality made befriending him -- especially by such a high profile couple -- potentially detrimental.

The Newmans never flinched. For me, that adds an extra luster to the career and the philanthropy.

And, Jesus God, he was hot.

My mom had a working agreement with my father that if she could she would leave him for Paul Newman. I'm said for my mom, he would have been a great step-dad.

Great actor, great director, and yes, @12, Jesus was he hot.

back in the day when things were a quite a bit different, my mom told me that paul newman was the first white man that she would kiss if she could. i wasn't sure what she meant and then she showed took me to see 'cool hand luke'. i just told her the news and she sighed that sigh of a woman whose dream just passed.

I've had a crush on Paul Newman since I was a little girl. A true man and someone who used his wealth to make the world a better place. Sad to see him go, I hope that his exit was peaceful.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and the Sting are, for my money, the best buddy pictures ever made.

Newman was a decent, engaged, non-asshole Hollywood superstar who stayed married to one woman for fifty years and donated the greater portion of the money he made capitalizing on his fame to charitable causes. Not many in that mold.

Plus, I think I speak for many straight men when I say that a movie like Cool Hand Luke can really raise some uncomfortable questions about one's true sexuality. Holy crap, he was good-looking.

Was sad when I heard the news. My first movie memory is going to see the Sting at the Devon theater in Chicago. He will be missed and one can only the goodness he started will continue on!

It appears he quit smoking 30 years ago and the heightened risk of lung cancer from smoking dissipates after ten years after you quit.

A good incentive to quit now.

IOW you can reclaim a pure state, after the passage of time, unlike virginity.
