Oh, the People You’ll Meet
I’d hoped to post a “Delegate of the Day,” but yesterday’s activities wrecked the camera. Instead, I’ll introduce you to the folks I met yesterday, one post at a time.
This dapper young caricature is called Dennis Lennox. He’s 24 and “the youngest delegate or alternate from Michigan.”
He didn’t have anything original to say—except that the protestors should cancel their march on account of the hurricane—but isn’t he cute? Like Republican Ken. Or a stylish lemur.

Sort of looks like Fnarf (with apologies to Fnarf).
Posted by Ziggity | September 2, 2008 9:35 AMthat is an insult to lemurs!
Posted by Mike in MO | September 2, 2008 9:37 AMi'm really tired of the blue ties.
i'm talking to YOU, Barack & Joe.
Posted by max solomon | September 2, 2008 9:38 AMYet *another* reason I'm glad we left Michigan.
Posted by Balt-O-Matt | September 2, 2008 9:40 AMIsn't that Sarah Palin's Down's Syndrome kid?
Posted by Providence | September 2, 2008 9:40 AMIf Will in Seattle and Fnarf had a love child, it would look like this man.
Posted by Hernandez | September 2, 2008 9:41 AM@4 Amen. He looks so full of joie de vivre I can hardly stand it!
Posted by Chris B | September 2, 2008 9:42 AMAw, I think he's kinda cute.
And I like the look on the guy's face in the background.
Posted by ebon | September 2, 2008 9:42 AMYou mean a *hate* child...
Posted by Billy the Cid | September 2, 2008 9:43 AMdidn't rick moranis play him in the movie?
Posted by ellarosa | September 2, 2008 9:44 AMJust be sure that you label the stinky protest hippies as caricatures, as well. I'd rather a fella wear a jacket and tie than a stinky hoody covered with spots of ramen noodle broth.
Posted by Jubilation T. Cornball | September 2, 2008 9:45 AMhe needs to learn how to do a tie knot properly.
Posted by Jiberish | September 2, 2008 9:45 AMHey, hey, HEY! I do NOT look like this boob! See that knot? Hideous. And there's a huge divot in his tie, which suggests he doesn't know how to pack. And my hair has never been that neatly combed unless I'm in costume. And the glasses! Dear God, those glasses are a travesty. I'll bet he jerks off to George Will columns.
Posted by Fnarf | September 2, 2008 9:46 AMFactoid of the day: Woodrow Wilson (a Democrat) was in the KKK.
Posted by Mahtli69 | September 2, 2008 9:46 AMLooks like Ralphie grew up to be a Republican.
Posted by UNPAID BLOGGER | September 2, 2008 9:46 AMHalf of me wants to sit down in gigantic old chairs with him, with a couple glasses of brandy and some pipes and a loyal hound curled up at our feet. The other half wouldn't dare pass up the golden opportunity to punch him in the face.
Posted by Mr. Poe | September 2, 2008 9:49 AMHa. Too true, Unpaid. Yikes!
Posted by leek | September 2, 2008 9:50 AMIf I was a rich Republican and I knew I had no fashion sense, I would check with my valet before leaving the house.
Posted by Uncle Vinny | September 2, 2008 9:51 AMThe estate of William F. Buckley Jr. had a yard sale?
Posted by The Peanut Gallery | September 2, 2008 9:52 AM15 FTW!!!!
Posted by Mike in MO | September 2, 2008 9:53 AMA tie that wide should can only hold a full-windsor knot.
Posted by Fashion Police | September 2, 2008 9:55 AMThe hardest challenge this young man has faced in his life is getting the older man forehead wrinkle established.
Posted by Lloyd Clydesdale | September 2, 2008 10:00 AM@16 - how come you never do that with me? with me it's just p.b.r. an unmade bed and a fat cat licking the skin off my feet.
Posted by le Juif | September 2, 2008 10:01 AMBut guys like him pinch their ties super-tight for a reason. It's not the only thing that's tight. But yes, he's play-acting here; which is OK, except that he's not doing it well.
Posted by Fnarf | September 2, 2008 10:01 AMI'll bet you a million dollars he butts into conversations about Salma Hayek with anecdotes about Friedrich Hayek.
Making the bed is arguably the most unproductive thing you can do in the morning.
Posted by Mr. Poe | September 2, 2008 10:05 AM@25 - seeing as how you don't have a bed, I would have to agree with you.
Posted by le Juif | September 2, 2008 10:09 AMSidenote: While looking for that Christmas Story poster, I ran across pics of the real Ralphie... Who knew he'd grow up to be so ruggedly handsome?
Posted by UNPAID BLOGGER | September 2, 2008 10:10 AMHere's to hoping this fellow never sets eyes on SLOG today... otherwise there will be (at least) one staffer getting a protest letter (yet, again) from certain fellow's pastor.
Posted by Phenics | September 2, 2008 10:12 AM@5: I love a laugh and mockery as much as the next guy, (see my usual posts) but drawing in a baby that will have a difficult life is in poor taste. Really.
Posted by Dave Coffman | September 2, 2008 10:13 AM@27 - Damn, he is hot!
Posted by Dave | September 2, 2008 10:14 AMI'm no sartorial expert, but that jacket looks really cheap, and it definitely doesn't fit him.
Posted by keshmeshi | September 2, 2008 10:15 AMAu contraire! We're picking it up tonight. Check it!
Posted by Mr. Poe | September 2, 2008 10:16 AMhow old did you say you were?

Posted by Comment Deleted | September 2, 2008 10:25 AMLadies and Gentlemen, the Love Child of Mr Magoo and Winston Churchill...
Posted by michael strangeways | September 2, 2008 10:36 AMWhat happened to his neck?
Posted by Genevieve | September 2, 2008 10:38 AMIt makes me giggle when 20 somethings try to look like 60 somethings. Kinda says a lot.
Posted by monkey | September 2, 2008 10:39 AMI'm not sure he's a caricature. I'd say he's a parody of a caricature. Or maybe a caricature of a parody.
Posted by LDP in Cincinnati | September 2, 2008 10:40 AMI'll bet you a million dollars he butts into conversations about Salma Hayek with anecdotes about Friedrich Hayek.
I will laugh about this all day.
Posted by peter | September 2, 2008 10:43 AMOh Fnarf. I'm going to have crazy passages from The Road to Serfdom stuck in my head all day now.
Fuck.
In Michigan, I went to a high school well stocked with guys just like this. I can hear his voice....
Posted by Jonathan Golob | September 2, 2008 10:49 AMSay good night, Gracie.
Posted by sorryroger | September 2, 2008 10:54 AMGood night Gracie.
@ 34: Right you are! He said he went to CMU and was a Mittcase.
But what do you mean by "taping his professor"? In the bathroom? To a chair?
Posted by Brendan Kiley | September 2, 2008 11:06 AMHe doesn't look a day over 40.
Posted by NapoleonXIV | September 2, 2008 11:24 AM@8... yes! the guy in the background! i've never seen a look of such perfectly distilled disgust
Posted by Nixor | September 2, 2008 11:29 AMWell, Brendan, my friend has since signed off from AIM, but a quick Google search turned up a lot of fuss from right-wing blogs. Apparently he had some hostile encounter with the interim dean of CMU and posted it onto YouTube. He was also reprimanded for distributing a newsletter critical of Gary Peters, and apparently the school officials presiding over the resulting hearing refused to participate because Lennox wanted to videotape the proceedings.
I don't know how much of that is true and how much is blog spin, but it's worth taking away that the title of one Google hit was "CMU Faculty label Lennox 'Virginia Tech dangerous'".
Posted by NB | September 2, 2008 11:52 AMis that his dad behind him?
Posted by john | September 2, 2008 11:53 AMI agree, doesn't look anything like either Fnarf or me.
Besides, I'm pro-choice ... I'd abort that thing.
Posted by Will in Seattle | September 2, 2008 12:19 PMAnd I'm giving @34 the win, for the contrary fact-based approach ...
Posted by Will in Seattle | September 2, 2008 12:22 PMThere is no Dennis Lennox here, only Gozer.
Posted by Dougsf | September 2, 2008 12:47 PMHe looks EXACTLY like you, Will. Except he looks clean.
Posted by Fnarf | September 2, 2008 12:59 PM@41 beat me to it, but I'll add that he also looks like the Late Mr. Burns with a particularly troublesome bout of "painful rectal itch"
Posted by COMTE | September 2, 2008 2:22 PMUnfortunately for him, by the time he gets to 30 he'll look like a caricature of a banker in a 1930's comedy, as long as he remembers to keep a soggy cigar handy at all times. The expression on his face is priceless, but boy does he ever need help dressing himself!
Posted by Calpete | September 2, 2008 3:32 PMI have met Dennis and he is every bit of what the foregoing comments portray.
El Nerdo, strango -- almost makes me feel sorry for him.
