Stephen Colbert is guest-starring in an issue of Spider-Man. It's always awkward when real people show up in a comic book. Case in point: the Hulk went on a rampage a few years ago because he was jealous of Freddie Prinze, Jr....

I seem to remember a Stephen Colbert proxy showing up in Spider-man at some point already. Some scene in a book store, as I recall.

I don't know, I gave up on ASM after OMD.

Ah, yes, the Hulk meltdown in The Ultimates. That reference was stale even when I first read the series in 2002; a big glaring boner (in the classic sense) in an otherwise superior reboot of the Avengers franchise. Re-reading the TPB, there are other references that fall flat now, like mentions of Playstation 2 and eBay, not to mention the now self-fulfilling prophecy of Samuel Jackson playing Nick Fury.

I liked the Freddie Prinze, Jr. reference. The Ultimates moves in real time, and characters age, politicians are in and out of office, and so on, so I'm okay with it.

Oh yeah, and it wasn't enough to just *talk* about Freddie Prinze, they had to actually show him on a date with Betty Ross, and get rescued by the Avengers when they evacuated lower Manhatten. Barf.

One thing I keep noticing in Marvel Comics is that they've apparently decided to perpetuate Colbert's 2008 presidential bid in the Marvel universe. I keep on seeing all these "Colbert '08 (and so can you!)" signs in the backgrounds.

You call that ass-crack shading? Young man, are you sure you want to draw for Spider-Man comics? I suggest if you intend to work another day for Marvel, you spend some long hours studying a muscular male ass-crack, from a low, frontal angle. For some titles, maybe the ass-crack doesn't play a major role, but if Spider-Man's ass crack is shaded unrealistically, it undermines the ENTIRE book, mister. The entire book.

Now get cracking.
