O They Will Know We Are Christians…

…by our child porn investigations, raids on our compounds, and our leader’s incriminating statement to the Associated Press.

Six minors have been temporarily placed in state custody as part of a child porn investigation after a raid on a ministry run by a man who says “consent is puberty” when it comes to sex, officials said Sunday.

The children will be in the custody of the Arkansas Department of Human Services as investigators interview them, state police spokesman Bill Sadler said in a statement. Sadler didn’t say how long the interviews would last, but did say that courts would decide the children’s status in the event of any “long-term separation” from the property of the Tony Alamo Christian Ministries in rural Fouke….

Alamo claimed in a telephone interview with The Associated Press on Saturday that the investigation was part of a federal push to legalize same-sex marriage while outlawing polygamy. He also said for girls having sex, “consent is puberty.”

Oh good lord. Or in this case, bad, bad lord.

I'm not sure whether to attribute this to Christianity or Arkansas. Bit of both, I suppose.

You know the man must be a monster of ego-mania when he names his church after hinself: "Tony Alamo Christian Church". Even Ken Hutcherson didn't name his church after himself.

Wait, WHAT? Does he mean that puberty is the AGE of consent? Or that the mere act of hitting puberty indicates that a girl is now in a state of perpetual consent?

I'm just trying to ascertain the exact brand of craziness we're dealing with here.

(PS: Somebody start a band called "State of Perpetual Consent.")

"Consent is puberty?" Did he mean "puberty is consent?"

My interpretation was that if a girl can consent, regardless of how old or young she is, then she's old enough. Regardless of how you interpret it, though, it's a fucked up thing to say.

This "church" is a cult. The kind of nastiness and sleaze you get in ordinary fundie churches, bad as it is, doesn't even hold a candle to what goes on in a cult. Therefore I don't think this belongs under the "O They Will Know We Are Christians By Our..." category. That category is for fundie churches. Cults should get their own category.

@ 4 and 5 - Are you really correcting his grammar? Was that the important part of the story for you? Let me help you, what he means is that if she's old enough to bleed, she's old enough to breed.

You're making light of the fact that these young girls are being raped. You're not much better than the asshole who is abusing them, really. You debate his grammatical errors while children suffer. Nice.

@4,

Maybe it's my cynicism talking, but I'm going for the latter. The concept of even basic human rights for women doesn't in any way register with these people.

Dude, cut the attitude, Charm. I think people are just trying to determine exactly how sickened they should be: extremely sickened, as with the idea that as long as girls are past puberty, they must be making fully informed decisions, or horrifically extremely insanely sickened, if what he means is that the mere act of sexual maturation means these girls are automatically giving consent to sex.

Oh, and someone needs to give that motherfucker a dictionary. "Consent" doesn't mean what you think it means.

I don't understand the confusion. Child pornography and 12-year-olds always equals extremely insanely sickened. These girls are not deciding to have sex. They are being abused, and the acts of abuse have travelled the internet. Discussing semantics just makes light of it. Save semantics for pit bull debates.

Wait a minute! This is a "a federal push to legalize same-sex marriage while outlawing polygamy"? Isn't polygamy already illegal? Did I miss something? Maybe the fundies are right in that gay marriage will hurt straight marriages - your second wife might have to be *shudder* a guy!

@14: Criminal bigamy (attempting to legally marry two or more people simultaneously) is illegal. Practical polygamy (considering two or more people to be your spouses and living with them in arrangements based on this consideration) is not.

"...the investigation was part of a federal push to legalize same-sex marriage while outlawing polygamy."

I also thought that was a weird thing to say, as this seems to have nothing to do with same-sex marriage, legal or otherwise. But here's a thought. Legalizing polygamy (or polyamory or whatever it's called when any number consenting adults of any gender can marry each other) would help put a stop to these horrid child-abusing cults. Right now they can claim to their flock that it's the government forcing them to be secret and underground. With legalized group marriage, they'd have to shut up or admit that it's not the polygamy issue, but rather the "we're not allowed to molest 12-year-old girls" issue that's keeping them underground.
