Now, this AIP thing is an issue that Obama's campaign should exploit for all it's worth. If anyone in his camp were part of a similar organization, I'd be hearing about it right now on the Diane Rehm show, instead of an interview with T. Boone Pickens (no mention of the Swift Boat ads yet, by the way).

Obama should send Biden out this week to rip Palin to shreds on this one.

This story doesn't have legs, because it's a lot more of "achieve independence under a minimal government" rather than succeeding from the Union. This is vintage Repubican sentiment and will be endearing to a lot of voters.

Friends of mine who were once affiliated with AIP have always told me the party's official stance is merely to seek the vote that Alaskans never got in 1958: to become a state, remain a territory/commonwealth, become independent, or some other option that I always forget. Of course, what's done is done, and Alaska's a state, but I always thought the party remained somewhat active by morphing instead into some pseudo-states rights type of party.

And isn't that a pretty Republican stance on paper? So... what's the big deal?

In addition, extrapolating this into that Palin is anti-American is not nearly as effective as extrapolating that Obama is anti-American from being marinated in Jerimiah Wrights "God Damn America" sermons for twenty years.

I thought it was strange of you to dig up a 20 year old video of Palin until I watched it and realized that the woman actually dresses like that.

That kind of makes me wish for McCain to win. It is worth every prize to pay to save a woman from that kind of clothes.

But I guess I wouldn't feel the same way if I were on the same continent as you guys.

Oh the horror .... when I linked to that AIP site I saw the endorsement of Mr. Bird, my high school teacher, who is again running for Senate.

Really, the AIP does attract some black-helicopter fearin' militia-wannabe anti-American types, but I think mostly it's about taking over all federal land in Alaska (see #7 in their platform) and selling off drilling/mining/water rights to various corporations. That's Alaskan self-sufficiency in a nutshell.

Another scandal that may get coverage today:

While Sarah was Mayor of Wasilla she tried to fire our highly respected City Librarian because the Librarian refused to consider removing from the library some books that Sarah wanted removed.

This apparently happened in 1996 or 1997, and while I don't know the details I'm positive she wanted some gay-friendly books taken off the shelves. I know that was happening in the early 90s in the Kenai Peninsula school libraries.

I know people say this all the time, but if McCain/Palin wins I'm seriously going to look at moving to some other country.

If Obama was a member of some similar group he'd be pilloried, and I think she is sending some subtle message wearing that raincoat indoors.

the time for nuance is over. the republicans would have no qualms about going to war on this kind of video. and on the clothes? alaska tends to be about 10 years behind in fashion, the villages tend to be about 20.

honestly, i don't know how a man could keep an erection in the same room with that voice. but judging from all the kids and the satisfied look on her husband's face, it's possible. or he wears earplugs.

The difference here is - Obama chose to be a presidential candidate. Palin doesn't even know what a vice president does - she didn't ask to be picked, didn't even consider herself VP material. Since she wasn't motivated to run for the position before it was thrust upon her, it's perfectly credible to figure out what her motivations are.

Which as it turns out include making a whole bunch of babies and building bridges to nowhere in the Sovereign Nation of Alaskaland.

I'm guessing that the Republicans plan is to deliberately LOSE this year so they can make a stunning comeback in 2012...

That's the only thing that makes sense.

Palin's loony, arch-conservative roots WILL appeal to the far-right, hard core Republicans, but they had those votes all along...she is NOT going to sound very appealing to the indie voters in Ohio, Michigan and Virginia that McCain so desperately needs.

There's a 527 group running ads here in Ohio connecting Barack Obama to former Weatherman William Ayers (I think that's his name) who is now a professor in Chicago and politically well-connected. This story about Palin is at LEAST as relevant as that, and I think would help counteract the Ayers ad. I think Dems should use it.
