Slog - Comments on My New Book Will Be Called Bindler's List

British mystery author Lynda LaPlante (shown at left) has been accused of plagiarizing part of one of her mysteries "from a 1947 book called Five Chimneys, by a Holocaust survivor, Olga Lengyel." In the face of these allegations that she stole part of a Holocaust denier's book, LaPlante is taking the classy route: she's blaming the error on a research assistant. Which doesn't make much sense, as it would mean that LaPlante's research assistant wrote huge passages of her own book. But whatever. Damned assistants!...

So she stole from a survivor and a denier? Or is the person from whom she pilfered one of those rare people that experienced the holocaust first hand and still denies it? Or are you just really crappy at editing before posting?

She used someone's memoir as a source for a novel?

Shocking

uh, most novelists do a lot of research when writing historical fiction...unless she copied stuff verbatim, I don't that this is the crime of the century...maybe a misdemeanor, and only because she didn't list her sources.

If it IS verbatim, then she must be killed.

@4

FTA: "La Plante's passages were so close to the original, it was clear she had done more than draw on the heart-rending memoir for background, instead lifting whole sections of text and putting them into Entwined with the lightest of massaging."
