Slog - Comments on More Ohio Tea Leaves

Report: New poll finds Obama trailing McCain in Ohio, 46-42. Theory: Perhaps it has something to do with this further finding from the poll, which leaves the reader to conclude that many Ohio voters are willing to vote against their own economic self-interests because there's just something they don't like about Obama... On who has the best plan to bring jobs to Ohio: Obama 40, McCain 29 On who is more trustworthy: McCain 49, Obama 41 Prescription: Afrodiazepine....

I hope Obama is running his new McCain liar ad in Ohio.

The stupidity of the electorate never ceases to amaze me. In the words of Lily Tomlin, "No matter how cynical I get, it’s just never enough to keep up."

Let's face it, America is rasist and will never vote for a black man even if their lives depended on it. Quite ironic when you think about it.

But maybe this is the way we thin out the stupid people from the herd? They just loose their homes, jobs etc with a McPalin presidency and they quietly die in the streets? It could be a good thing in the long run.

my god. we really are going to lose, aren't we?

As far as voting against their self interest: there is a lot of evidence out there to support this theory. I don't call it voting against their self interest, I call it people being to stupid to deserve the right to vote.

They're focusing on huge voter turnout in urban areas. Why squabble over 300 voters in Xenia when the same effort nets 6000 in Cleveland? Fucking relax, already! We've got an incredible ground game going.

Comment by Glenn Fleishman

I don't understand Ohio. John McCain has direct ties with the lobbyist who worked to get Deutsche Post approved to take over DHL, partly with assurances that jobs in the U.S. wouldn't be lost. DHL plans to shed 8,000 jobs in Ohio, and the ripple effect will probably be tens of thousands of other jobs. (UPS will pick up the slack for DHL in the U.S., so those jobs will likely mean a smaller increase in UPS employees, but not in Ohio where DHL had its big hub.)

So...McCain has been directly challenged and asked about this in Ohio, he's punted on his answers (promising some answer, but not having anything really to say), and yet voters are willing to accept this in greater and greater numbers.

I grew up in Oregon, in liberal Eugene, and I recall as a teenager being constantly amazed at how often timber workers were willing to vote 100 percent against their interests, in the interests of the folks who held them in a real economic slavery, because liberals were "tree huggers," and conservatives were "real men" or something like that. They didn't realize somehow that they were cutting logs that weren't being replaced, and that were being shipped to Asia for integration and return into products we bought. (Add to that the widespread illegal undergrading of logs that ensured prime lumber was being exported when it shouldn't and at ridiculous valuations.)

I don't think we should rule out the election for Obama just because "merikans" in Ohio are too stupid and racist to vote in their best interests: Obama has leads in swing states such as CO, NM, and VI, which may help him offset the loss of Ohio in the general.

@13, I'm living in OH right now. Only place I've ever lived. I continued going to college here because of the cheaper in-state rates...we're still real dumb and racist. Apparently these people don't see the houses in good neighborhoods with shuttered windows, "for sale" signs in the ground so long they've rusted, the abandoned warehouses and factories where our grandparents were guaranteed jobs until they were outsourced. The only jobs left in my hometown are Wal-Mart, a grunt worker at the hospital, or cleaning something.

On one side, it depends how/where they polled. A majority of people I know who are voting Obama are young and/or only have cell phones or they're without a phone. The rural areas will never vote Obama, even if McCain said he raped puppies. The urban areas, however, are pretty damn active. It just comes down to actual voter turnout.

Comment by Nora

@14: I moved from Ohio to Illinois, lived in Illinois for 14 years, then moved back to Ohio. Just as many stupid racists in Illinois, trust me--and I lived in the Chicago area--it's worse downstate. I think the MAIN problem (and it's a problem across the rust belt) is that every four years, on the one hand we get pandered to, on the other hand called stupid (or stupid racists, or stupid hillbillies, or whatever) and in the end, nothing happens. Nothing gets better. We don't believe or trust politicians. I've no doubt that there are plenty of stupid racists (just as there are in every state) but calling people stupid racists is NOT a great way to get them to vote for your candidate.

@16: See above.
