From the BBC: "Preliminary tests have found the chemical melamine in Cadbury's Chinese-made chocolates, the company says." From Wikipedia: "Melamine is combined with formaldehyde to produce melamine resin, a very durable thermosetting plastic, and melamine foam, a polymeric cleaning product. The end products include countertops, dry erase boards, fabrics, glues, housewares and flame retardants. Melamine is one of the major components in Pigment Yellow 150, a colorant in inks and plastics." Also: Don't eat the White Rabbit....

Sad day, for sure. White Rabbit rocks. I will never eat it again. For having the best food in the world, China sure fucks up with everything else. What's their problem?

@3, and important to add that apparently none of the Cadbury's sold in the U.S. is made in China, according to NPR this morning. My current Irish Creme-flavored Cadbury's bar was manufactured by Hershey's in Pennsylvania.

Just for clarity, it should be noted that melamine is harmless in small amounts. As a matter of fact: "the toxic dose is on a par with common table salt with an LD50 of more than 3 grams per kilogram of bodyweight".

Cadbury has been slipping down the tubes, anyway. In Britain, they got into trouble with the government (stringent UK standards re: ingredients in chocolate) and were ordered to stop calling their products chocolate. That's why I wasn't surprised when I'd heard the recent story about Hershey's getting called out by the US gov't for a similar issue. (BTW, Hershey is licensed to make Cadbury's products for the US market.) Frankly, most chocolate here tastes like sweetened, waxy dirt. People should stop buying the crap.
