The argument is, apparently, that the candidates need to focus on the economic crisis. But what is needed from Obama and McCain regarding the economic crisis, other than what they are already doing? (Which is making speeches, making their positions clear, and making themselves available for Senate votes if need be.) Hard to know how this will play, but Obama has an opportunity here to say something like: "No way. By doing this, he strengthens his "Country First" message, and if Obama goes for it, he gets to link Obama to the "failed policies" of George Bush.

It's win-win for McCain. He doesn't have to debate and he gets to say Obama puts politics over the needs of the American people.

Pretty shrewd if you ask me.

He should announce that he will be at the debate sight prepared to discuss foreign policy or the economy. This is weird as I think about it because McCain has been cast as being strong on national security issues. McCain needs a reboot (or the R's need a new candidate) but that is no reason for Obama to stop.

As for McCain, this is a very political move and may well prove a benefit to his campaign. He gets to avoid being questioned about his past voting record on the issues that got us into this present financial mire. Obama can at least claim that he hasn't been around long enough to be responsible for this mess.
