Man Arrested In Maple Leaf Shooting to be Released

posted by on September 26 at 16:17 PM

The 19-year-old man arrested following Wednesday night’s shooting in Maple Leaf will be released as police continue to investigate the case.

The 19-year-old man, who is an art and design student in Seattle, is suspected of shooting a 21-year-old man outside of the North Manor apartment complex in the 9700 block of 5th Ave NE just before 7pm Wednesday night. Police recovered a rifle at the scene.

According to the Seattle Times, the shooting may have stemmed from a car prowl. A 2001 Toyota Camry is registered to the 19-year-old man.

Posts that aren't related to tonight's debate are frustrating.

I love the comment from the SPD that this area doesn't have a high incident of car prowls. WHAT? Like the police would know. Honestly, you'd think they would, but car prowls take 5-6 hours to get an officer response and all they do is write a report. The officer will act completely bored the entire time letting you know you are wasting his time. So, who is going to bother reporting a car prowl to the police? NOBODY.

However, any casual reader of neighborhood blogs in the north end will tell you the major crime problems: graffiti, car break-ins, and opportunity theft from garages and sheds. Over and over and over again. Nobody reports this to the police, because the police don't care. So why should the car prowlers? Even if they get caught, they often aren't even arrested. Jail is too full for misdemeanors. A few more getting shot wouldn't be a bad thing.

#2, did you miss the memo about white flight 30 years ago? Move to issaquah so you don't have to worry about the horrors of shed theft.

Another reason to keep guns out of the hands of idiots. It constantly amazes me what little value Americans put on human life. This guy believes that his car stereo (or whatever else is in his car) is more valuable than a human life and clearly went to his car wanting to kill this prowler (pretty sure he could have chased the guy away by shooting in his direction or even straight into the air, rather than simply EXECUTING HIM FOR STEALING FROM HIS CAR!!!). That is sick. It is evil. If there is a God, then that guy is so going to be haunted until he goes insane.

@ #4,

It seemed from the slant of the article that most of the people who're shot/injured during car prowls are the owners who go outside to see what's happening with there property. That being the case, the prowler mightn't have been "executed" for theft he may have been shot because the 19 year old kid found him threatening. Aren't most petty thefts to support a drug habit? Most addicts are not pleasant souls if you make the mistake of getting in the way of their next high. The cops released the shooter pending more information. Wait awhile before you go raining fire and brimstone on the teenager.

In related news, lots of other people were released from jail for similar things in less hoity-toity neighborhoods, but nobody in the MSM covered that, cause poor people don't matter to the media.

For the 16 year old witness waiting at the bus stop that evening, seeing someone die right in front of their eyes that night and then having to call 911, another life is forever changed. For this young person a simple bus stop is no longer. How do we help this young individual heal from this trauma and feel safe and trust their surroundings?
