Lies, the Lying Politicians Who Tell Them, and the Opportunity All This Provides Obama

Looks like Palin didn’t make that visit to Iraq after all:

WASILLA, Alaska — Aides to Gov. Sarah Palin are scrambling to explain details of her only trip outside North America — which, according to a new report, did not include Iraq, as the McCain-Palin campaign had initially claimed.

Palin made an official visit to see Alaskan troops in Kuwait in July of 2007. There, she made a stop at a border crossing with Iraq, but did not actually visit the country, according to a new report in the Boston Globe.

And, those huge crowds that Palin’s been helping McCain draw? Well…

Senator John McCain has drawn some of the biggest crowds of his presidential campaign since adding Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to his ticket on Aug. 29. Now officials say they can’t substantiate the figures McCain’s aides are claiming.

McCain aide Kimmie Lipscomb told reporters on Sept. 10 that an outdoor rally in Fairfax City, Virginia, drew 23,000 people, attributing the crowd estimate to a fire marshal.

Fairfax City Fire Marshal Andrew Wilson said his office did not supply that number to the campaign and could not confirm it. Wilson, in an interview, said the fire department does not monitor attendance at outdoor events.

In recent days, journalists attending the rallies have been raising questions about the crowd estimates with the campaign. In a story on Sept. 11 about Palin’s attraction for some Virginia women voters, Washington Post reporter Marc Fisher estimated the crowd to be 8,000, not the 23,000 cited by the campaign.

The Obama campaign is now moving toward a response that I suggested on KUOW’s Weekday yesterday—at about 24:45. (Not that I believe Obama takes his marching orders from Weekday, but hey, what good is a blog if you can’t use it to note that you were right about something or other.) Here’s the Obama response to today’s news:

The McCain campaign said Governor Palin opposed the Bridge to Nowhere, but now we know she supported it. They said she didn’t seek earmarks, but now we know she hired a lobbyist to get millions in pork for her town and her state. They said she visited Iraq, but today we learned that she only stopped at the border. Americans are starting to wonder, is there anything the McCain campaign isn’t lying about?

The response is missing one key leap, though. I bet the leap is coming soon, but here’s how I imagined it yesterday:

I think there will come a point sometime soon when there’s enough of a critical mass of media lie-noting, or calling out of untruths on McCain’s part, that the Obama campaign has an opportunity to work that up into a list of indictments, a sort of bill of particulars. And to say, “Lying about this, lying about that, lying about the Bridge to Nowhere, lying about their experience… Sound familiar? It’s like the lies that the Bush administration told you for the last eight years. It’s like the lies about Iraq…”

That, I think, could be a very heavy anchor to wrap around the necks of Palin and McCain—and, it doesn’t fall prey to any of the cultural shields about sexism and so on. This is about an issue [lying] that everyone can grasp. It doesn’t have anything to do with gender or identity.

Again, my guess is that the leap to Bush and Iraq war untruths is coming soon.

Look, she was stopped at the border. That means she could SEE INTO Iraq, just as she can see Russia from those parts of Alaska she's likely never been to, either. You need to cut her some slack.

What is wrong with these people? What's hilarious is the utter lack of necessity for these lies, well except the pork/bridge to nowhere one. They sound like congenital liars, who can't tell the truth about anything.

They can't help lying. They've been brain washed by the Bush administration to believe that the truth can't be trusted. They know no other way of life. It was how Republicans were raised.

As Josh Marshall discussed on Talking Points, the lying is really an indication of the lack of morality we see in the current administration with no change in sight in a McCain administration. The misinformation, spin and secrecy will abound. And the result is the corruption and outrageous behavior we've seen in this administration, from shipping pallets of cash that disappeared in Iraq to the influence peddling by Tom Delay and the K Street project to full-on party mode in the Department of the Interior. From a security policy based on "24" to the Interior Dept. acting like "Mad Men," these people are so divorced from any moral basis for their actions that the Republican "brand" would be bankrupt in a truly free marketplace.

Whew!

I think most people are so numb now a days from all of the lies the Bush administration has told that they no longer care or pay attention. They just see it as business as usual.

But hell, ask them who they'd rather get drunk with. Never mind the painful hangover that comes from choosing a President that way.

I always got the feeling that the media was pushing for a horserace and much of the McCain bias stemmed from the fact he was losing and they wanted a close race.

Now that McCain is ahead its seems that the narative has shifted again I suspect to keep it interesting.

In the end however I get the feeling that the corporate lords who control the media may actually want Barack to win this time.

He makes for much better TV and I don't think he's any more liberal than Bill Clinton when it comes to business.

All that talk about sticking it to oil companies with regards to taxes will be taking with one hand and giving it back with another.

Exxon et al are heavily invested in 'alternative fuels' now and will be the beneficiaries of Barack's new govenment programs.

Despite all the gloom & doom the major automakers are all in the top 10 US companies and also look to make out like bandits.

I think the fix is in (Chuch Hagel is the Diebold guy and he defected too!)

What has EVER given any of us the idea that Americans DON'T WANT TO BE LIED TO?

The truth SHOULD set us free...and the truth WOULD set us free if more of us actually cared about it.

I simply wouldn't put too much faith in Americans valuing truth over confirming whatever they've chosen to believe, even if what they believe isn't true.

And that's why I'm very concerned about the chances of a McCain/Palin victory...because they're telling the lies that their voters want to hear. Just because it isn't true doesn't seem to be a problem for those who just want to be spoonfed agreement.

PS--And, when you think of it in an entirely cynical way--the mistake that let everyone know that W's presidency was a horrific nightmare wasn't actually the decision to invade Iraq based upon lies... The mistake was not simply continuing to lie...and, specifically, the decision not to just lie and say that WMDs were found there (thank you, Lewis Black, for pointing that out.) Had they said that...people would have believed it. Hell, there are a significant chunk of the American population who believes that we DID find WMDs even now...and that they had both Saddam & Osama's autographs on the side of every missile. What on earth could the actual "truth" do to sway minds like that?

None of this matters. Americans are a stupid people, and will believe the outcome of yet another rigged election. Our only alternative is to revolt!

The problem is that Americans only love war if someone else is fighting it. Like the poor. If we take action we might >gasp!

I'm going to miss the PacNW when I become an expat.

Bolivia and Venezuela seem to be good places to go. Not Russia; too much like the U.S.

Here's the problem, people knew Bush lied and yet they re-elected him. So, face it, proving that McCain/Palin have lied repeatedly isn't going to hurt them.

Wow. Fucking brilliant idea. When people lie, tell the public they are lying.

But oh don't do it now. Wait. Slide3 up to it slowly. You don't want it to lead out too soon. First, say you will attack them if they lie.

then, say you can't just make stuff up.

Then a few days later, let your campaign issue a statement that says they lie.

Then maybe, at some point, the candidate himself will say they lie.

Brilliant.

Hide your message for a few weeks. That way it doesn't "peak" too early.

Meanwhile that ad about he can't send an e mail:

Boston Globe 3.4.2000: "McCain's severe war injuries prevent him from combing his hair, typing on a keyboard, or tying his shoes."

I predict McCain will open up about this a little later on, like on national TV in one of the debates.

Obama needs to make the election about the voter. Calling McCAin a liar would be a great step, but until it's tied into how and why that matters to a Jane Sixpack swing voter in Mi it does not do the job.

they're lying about the economy. they're lying because under Obama that Jane Sixpack will get an immediate $xxxx tax break [warning; the actual number is still a huge secret, carefully guarded by the Obama campaign], and under Obama the govt. will establish a conservatorship to guarantee all the GM legacy health care costs, freeing GM to actually make it instead of sinking with its volt, so that Jane Six[ack's 25 year old kid who's now lucky to be working in the 7-11 will have a real job.

So while I applaud the sage, clever advice to call a liar a ...... liar....really it's all lagging way too far behind.

That corwd in Dover HN had to beg him and beg him to use the word liar. So the story was all about that instead of focusing on "Obama challenges McCAin's honor" --

haven't we learned anything?

Take the opponent's strength, in this case, the whole honor thing.

And attack it relentlessly. Over and over, in every message, with every surrogate, repeat till we are all sick of it.

NOT carefully edging up to it after weeks and weeks of travel in Germany, vcation in Hawaii, attacking Palin for motherhood, etc. etc.

Bonus: if we did it, our attacks would even be true, not false!!!!

He needs to paint McCain and GOP as liars like those CEO's who loot your company and leave you with no future.

THAT's the frame. Cux that's what they're doing to America. And Obama needs to say so.

"They're lying. And they're looting. And they're taking away YOUR American dream."

"It doesn’t have anything to do with gender or identity."

Wow it's only taken what, 40 years to realize that basing a campaign for president on identity politics doesn't work for the Democratic Party?

Next news flash: Democrats win when they talk about the economy.....and tell swing voters why Democrats are good for them.....

Also (via Sullivan) -- the McCain campaign claims that Sarah Palin visited "Ireland, Germany, Kuwait, and Iraq" on her only trip overseas. Turns out that Ireland was a refueling stop, and she didn't even get off the plane. Nice!

Ah, the two way street -

Knowing Mc Cain still suffers severe disabilities from the Vietnam war - can't comb his own hair, raise his arms, can't keyboard - knowing all that in advance - is the spirit of truth to run an ad kicking him for not doing email?

That is a great example of twisting the truth - hence - lying.

Be careful, you all, Snow White isn't in this campaign, an all out down and dirty political race with only one winner.

The dish is Obama likes ladies, all fine. Hope there is not a love child in his past.

@15, others have beat me to it, but it's not a secret, and if you don't want to bother following those links, here's the answer you're looking for:

"Families making between $37,595 and $66,354 of annual income with Obama would get an average tax cut of $1,042 per family while McCain’s tax cut for this group would be $319, the report states."

Should he be repeating that as often as possible? Probably, but it's not the only thing he has to talk about.

Sadly, I agree with @14. I'm not sure laying out all the lies in clear, unmistakable language, is going to mean anything to a barefoot-and-pregnant swing state voter.

The only thing that will make a difference is for the MAIN STREAM MEDIA to grab hold of the meme and not let go.

And for hurricanes to stop. Because they fuck up the media's concentration -- after all, isn't a dog trapped on a roof a better story than, oh, reproductive rights or teaching creationism in schools?

Yeah I watched the ad, twice last night. And my thought was what a bunch of fucked up trash political advertising, by a smart guy I back for president.

Backlash all over it and not pointed to policy or things that matter to swing voters.

I am not an R, your insults are stupid, and by any measure it is a crappy ad. And if Obama keeps trash like that on the air, he is going to waltz away from the oval office point by point.

Did you watch it, and think it brilliant per chance?

The mainstream media wasn't widely reporting on the lies that got us into the mess in Iraq before Bush was re-elected in 2004. I think that we only recently have been paying particular attention to the lies we have been told from the Bush Administration since 2001.

The difference now is that we all know that Bush and his friends are liars. If the US elects McCain, in the face of clear evidence that he is a liar in the same vein as Bush, we are sending a message to the world, which is: We are complicit in these lies. We didn't know we were being lied to before, but we know now, and we don't care.

If we were playing capture the flag, this would be called "babying the line". No, this Governor and mother who sent two children to fight there for your freedom went to the border of Iraq. It's not like she claimed to have taken a world cruise when she only mentioned Mexico and Canada as the countries she has visited.

Dan Savage -brave warrior Oct. 2002

"War may be bad for children and other living things, but there are times when peace is worse for children and other living things, and this is one of those times. Saying no to war in Iraq means saying yes to the continued oppression of the Iraqi people.

In the meantime, invading and rebuilding Iraq will not only free the Iraqi people, it will also make the Saudis aware of the consequences they face if they continue to oppress their own people while exporting terrorism and terrorists. The War on Iraq will make it clear to our friends and enemies in the Middle East (and elsewhere) that we mean business: Free your people, reform your societies, liberalize, and democratize... or we're going to come over there, remove you from power, free your people, and reform your societies for ourselves."

Uhh when Dan writes "ourselves" he doesn't mean himself, he means other people fighting and dying while he stays at home and takes it up the ass.

What's stopping him? The truth?

I bet McCain's new handlers have hit upon the winning strategy--take credit for anything Obama does that people like, while, at the same time, accuse Obama of all of your man's own flaws.

We can gnash our teeth all we want...what can anyone do when we may have finally reached a point where, in America, 2+2=5. (Only 24 years late...)

The ultimate McCain campaign commercial was written and filmed by Monty Python, years ago...

Refuting the lies is very important, but the Obama campaign has been knocked off course. He has to start framing the debate on his own terms, and get back on message or he will lose.
