Nice work, MSNBC. Way to push the McCain camp’s dishonest characterization of Obama’s “lipstick on a pig” remark. Says Slog tipper Matthew: “Where’s the ‘No, because the whole thing is a manufactured controversy set up by McCain and his Rove-inspired gutter ball tactics’ choice?” Obama wasn’t talking about Palin—but, hey, so fucking what? Here’s Obama’s comment in context:

“John McCain says he’s about change, too—except for economic policy, health care policy, tax policy, education policy, foreign policy and Karl Rove-style politics. That’s just calling the same thing something different.”

With a laugh, he added: “You can put lipstick on a pig; it’s still a pig. You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change; it’s still going to stink after eight years.”

Obama is clearly talking about Bush’s policies, which McCain embraces, and not McCain’s dishonest, shrill, POS running mate. Can you people at MSNBC read? And if it “crosses a line” for Obama to use the “lipstick on a pig” expression in reference to policies, what about McCain using the expression in reference to Hillary Clinton?

@2 - Wrong. This is a one-sided argument. Dems worry and fret all the time about being even-handed and fair, while Republicans will do and say anything - lie, cheat, and steal - to win. That's why Dems keep losing, and that's why Republicans have no souls.

I would like to take a moment to point out that yesterday, in Slog comments to "Perverse" I predicted that:

"this (Obama's pig comment) is going to get traction in the next couple of news cycles"

to which Julie in Chicago responded:

"And there is absolutely no way that that gets "traction" in the next news cycle. Are you retarded?"

Fuck you Julie in Chicago.

Maybe Obama should run an ad using this portion of the speech. It would be some sweet justice for the magical-thinking liars.

#5, the point is that there isn't actually a viable option in the poll. Both non-I-don't-know answers imply that it was a cheap shot.

#6, your reading comprehension is terrible, and you predicted it would get traction because it was an actual low blow by Obama, when in fact it's a fucking idiom and it's only getting traction because the MSM are a bunch of fucktards.

Therefore, you fail, and fuck you.

Please don't validate MSNBC's inane poll by voting in it. Write them an email instead and call them out for blatantly assisting McCain's ever-sleazier efforts to distort the truth with lies and smokescreen controversies.

Agree with the answer suggested by Dan. Obama gave a good retort this morning to this hulabaloo. However, he needs state things not so often in professorial way - keep the sentences short and to the point. Use language at the level of what a fifth grader can understand, because that is the aggregate level of intelligence of the electorate.

How about when McCain said, "Remember the words of Chairman Mao: 'It's always darkest before it's totally black.'"

I think that was racist and went too far. It was way out-of-line, even for the "rough-and-tumble" world of politics.

While it is now obvious that Republicans completely misconstrued Obama's comment, I still think Palin is an ugly person when you look at her (albeit limited) record and beliefs. If the pig comment had been intentional it would have been brilliant. 1. It implies that Palin is NOT HOT.
2. It shows that Barak can fight a dirty opponent with dirt and have it stick.
3. The GOPee response makes Palin appear like a cry baby who screams wolf the minute people try to find out what she's all about.

@9

Nowhere did I say it was INTENDED to be an actual low blow to Palin by Obama.

I said the reporter THOUGHT that the CROWD THOUGHT it was.

I never said it SHOULD get traction only that it WOULD get traction.

My point was that it was a mistake by Obama. Why would he intentionally give the opposition a sound bite that could be so easily taken out of context and used against him? He's usually more careful than that.

Perception is reality in politics.

You really have to hunt to find that poll on MSNBC.com -- the actual news at the top of the page is on things like the ongoing meltdown of the economy and deterioration of the situation in Afghanistan as a hurricane bears down on Texas.

The only people paying attention to a lipsticked pig are the nellies wringing their hands over why they're afraid Obama is doomed (today), and the mentally unstable who are declaring victory based on some really desperate-sounding political attacks (especially for mid-September). If McCain is this desperate now, what is he going to sink to by November?

@35. It's okay... I was wrong. It amazes me that even though I am really qiute cynical about the intelligence level of the average American (and the campaigns and media that pander to them), somehow I still manage to overestimate them.

There is no way that any rationale, marginally intelligent person could have construed that comment, in context, as referring to Palin. That much, I stand by.

Though, I do think that this won't have traction for the next "couple of" news cycles, just today (@11 is right about 9/11), so in that you were only partially right.

@This Country. It is making me super depressed right now that I do all this thinking and debating and donating and volunteering regarding this election, and one freakin' campaign ad linking Obama to Bill Ayers ("do you know enough to elect Barack Obama") or implying that he wants to teach sex to kindergartners and some dipshit will vote for McCain.

For fuck's sake. I can have a reasonable discussion with someone who believes in small government or fiscal conservatism or free trade, but if you're voting because Obama's a Muslim who wants to sex up your 6-year old, then I think I'll just go behind the barn and shoot myself.

@38. Truce? I too am really quite cynical about the intelligence level of the average American (and the campaigns and media that pander to them), but I seldom manage to overestimate them. This is like watching sausage get made, and it’s going to get nothing but worse.

I do believe that the average person could have construed that comment, in context, as referring to Palin (if you include Palin’s pit bull / lipstick comment in the context) and that more than many of the people in the room did. That much, I stand by. But I will grant that Obama is to smart to intentionally make that construction. I think it was just a poor choice of words, and he seemed to realize it as soon as the audience reacted.

I will grant that this may not have traction for the next "couple of" news cycles, just today (and that @11 is probably right about 9/11).

The fact that elections seem to always come down to the dipshits depresses me too. I think that both candidates are better than the audience by this stage in a national election. Unfortunately, it seems like whoever can get to the audiences level fastest has an advantage.

Full disclosure: in my “scale” Obama & McCain are evenly weighted (I really liked McCain in 2000, but am disillusioned with him now). Biden is about half again more objectionable to me than Palin. So I tip toward McCain, but can’t be enthused about either ticket.

I do believe in small government, fiscal conservatism, free trade, a woman’s right to choose, and gay marriage. But I don’t believe that either party will make any substantive changes (positive or negative) to any of these issues in the next decade. And none of them are “deal killers” for me. I guess I’m voting mostly on national security and the economy this cycle. And I do not believe that Obama is a Muslim (and, actually, would not care if he were) and I do not believe that he wants to sex up any 6-year olds (though I think that to construe that from the McCain add is every bit as big a stretch as to construe that Palin was the pig in lipstick, and no more intended).

Frankly, I don’t think the world will end (or improve) based on the outcome of this election and I could never trust anyone who aspires to high office.

I read Slog every day, and will admit to deriving a limited pleasure from watching some of the posters get all worked up, and probably to much pleasure from poking them with sticks now and then. But it’s a damn dull conversation if everyone is in agreement.

Please don’t go behind the barn and shoot you self. I apologize for the “fuck you”, it was a retarded comment.

35, 37 and 40 are not me (and YOU can fuck right off) but 6, 22 and 36 are.

@44. Truce. I don't care about the "fuck you", but thanks for apologizing.

I, too, was excited about 2000-era McCain. I remember being very excited about both Bradley and McCain (for different reasons, obviously) and thinking "we can't lose"! Oh, how wrong I was.

And, oh how depressing McCain's fall has been. I wouldn't have even voted for 2006-era McCain, let alone 2008-era. I just wonder how he looks himself in the eye in the mirror anymore.

Anyways, I won't be headed to the barn just yet, but if Obama loses, I probably won't be able to bring myself to be excited about any future presidential election, given three straight instances of crushing disappointment.

@41,

So now that this is playing out in a way that seems to benefit Obama considerably all of 5 hours after you posted, do you still think it was a gaffe?

Man, the news/spin/analysis/meta-analysis cycle is getting short in this campaign!

Posted by Mr. X | September 10, 2008 9:32 PM

@45

I just keep hoping that McCain has been saying what he has had to to get the nomination, but that the real McCain from 2000 is still in there somewhere waiting to govern.

I don't know what to think of Palin yet (though she does SEEM personally likable) but I'm not too worried about her because I think McCain's got at least 10 good years left in him. (He's had 30+ years of Senatorial health care. and his mother is older than Methuselah.)

I really don't like Biden (old school party politician, plagiarist, liar) and I'm kind of terrified that Obama may be assassinated.

This whole mess is deeply depressing.

If Obama had named a young, popular outsider as his VP, I think he would have locked my vote. (Though he would still have to convince me that his tax policy is sound.)
