Katie Couric Questions Sarah Palin

When the un-teleprompted Palin talks, I can’t help but think of that dig from E. M. Forster’s Howards End—the character Helen talking (page 22 of the Penguin edition): “I felt for a moment that the whole Wilcox family was a fraud, just a wall of newspapers and motor-cars and golf-clubs, and that if it fell I should find nothing behind it but panic and emptiness.”

First off, yay for quoting E.M.! Secondly, is she a box of rocks or what? Maddening. Simply maddening. I love at the end she says "I'll get back to ya!" Or whatever nonsense she speaks.

How on EARTH can someone look at the McCain/Palin ticket and think it's a good idea to vote for them? It's irresponsible.

Why did they even THINK it was a good idea to choose this woman as their running mate?! She repeated the same thing twice at the beginning of interview. Then when asked to give an example of a time he voted for MORE regulation, she gave the example that Katie Couric already gave and told her not to use!!! AHHHHH!!!!

Why is the US political system so broken that people as inanely dumb as Sarah Palin even able to move beyond the office of Mayor of Wasilla?

She is as dumb as a box of hammers and would seem to have the political skills of said box.

She prattles on about how John McCain is a maverick and yet when pressed is incapable of outlining anything he has doneto desrve the tag that he and his team invented.

When presented with the fact that the polls say Obama has increased his lead as a consequence of the crisis she starts waffling.

She seems to think (as did a lot of conservatives in the last election here in Australia) that the polls are lieing simply because they want the poll figures to be the way they want them to be.

I hope that the fate of McCain & Palin is the same as that of the conservatives here last year (a complete rout and destruction at the polling booths.

Never underestimate racist idiots, dear. That's the ONLY reason McCain would win, and the country is full of them.

You know, I've been thinking: Should McCain actually win this thing, I intend to start a business that is relentlessly and obsessively geared towards separating bigoted morons from their money: Think the Harriett Carter Catalog, only schmaltzier, and with worse quality junk.

I'm thinking I'll start by getting a truckload of gravel, and start selling them as Holy Land relics: Ancient Stones Trod Upon by Our Lord, authenticated by some made-up religious organization. Three stones to a bag, $5 a bag, plus shipping and handling.

I'll then expand into a line of Sarah Palin wigs.

Who's in it with me? It would be delicious!

Katie Couric tried, with moderate success, not to talk down to Mrs. Palin. I give her major points for that.

What a fucking ignorant, shell-shocked, bubble-headed woman Sarah Palin is.

The View gives the best John McCain interviews and Katy Couric has the best Sarah Palin interview to date. I might actually start watching their respective programming on a regular basis.

Posted by mj | September 24, 2008 6:32 PM

The women will bring her down. It has to be this way. Andrew Sullivan, Joe Biden, none of them will be able to do it without looking like big ol' meanies. But put Palin up against Naomi Klein (in my dreams!), the View, even frigging Katie Couric who actually looks like a serious journalist here -- and Palin has no excuse. She's toast. She knows it. Her whole performance collapses when she can't get anyone to be her girlfriend-mommy-buddy to gossip and bitch with her, or go ga-ga over her hotness. When she loses that?

NOTHING THERE. Only another woman will be able to expose her so completely. Katie Couric has done it. She deserves a huge career boost from this.

(I bet Palin can't wait for this to be over so she can get her book deal and go home. She's giving up caring for her own children for this, you know?)

There is a teensy sliver of my brain that feels bad for her. I mean, she is humiliating herself on a national stage.

It couldn't possibly get much worse than that first part of the interview when they were walking. She repeated the exactly same talking point, word for word. After like a 10 second pause trying to come up with something else to say.

The "what are the pros and cons of a moratorium on foreclosures" question was excellent. Try to get her to speak intelligently on an issue that anybody could see she knows nothing about. Good job, Katie Couric.

But Julie (29), does she even realize she's humiliating herself? I don't think so. I think she thinks she's doing a damn fine job of showing us Lower 48ers how great the Secessionist State of Alaska can be and what fine, upstanding hockey mom/pitbull citizens it can produce. Those little moments of pursed lips? She's thinking it makes her look as though she's seriously considering the question, not as though she's about to take another punch to the face. And I'm willing to bet that she really believes 99% of the voting public can't see through the way she avoids actually saying anything.

This really is insulting. I'm a terrible speaker, and I cannot communicate my thoughts well (this post will prove it). Still, I pay close enough attention to politics that I could have come up with some bullshit boilerplate answer that would have been exponentially better than Palin's. It doesn't just tell me that she's unqualified and has no idea what she's talking about--it also tells me that she paid no attention to national politics whatsoever prior to Rove selecting her. Hell, she even admitted that she really knew nothing more about the surge than what she heard a few times on the news.

I don't think Palin came across well either, but all of this talk of Biden making "mincemeat" out of her at the Veep debates isn't reassuring. Remember Lloyd Bentsen's disembowelling of Dan Quayle at the 1988 Veep debates? There was no doubt beforehand that Bentsen would wipe the floor with Quayle. And he did. But who won the next two elections?

Don't get me wrong. I still think this is Obama's race to lose. But we can't depend on the failings of Sarah Palin to win this for us.

I have to disagree with you. Sarah Palin is a very smart women. You need to watch her with Sean Hannity. It was great. She has only been doing this for 3 weeks. go back and watch obama's interviews 19 months ago and you can see who actually looks stupid. The media wants her to fail. They look down at her because she's a women. and she stands for values the liberal media can't understand. I think people are going to be surprised at the vice-president's debate. Even Bill clinton had nice things to say about her. But enough of these stupid questions. Ask questions about what her job will be as vice-president, and the economy and issues that matter.

Posted by dt | September 25, 2008 9:32 PM

@81 - The media look down on her because she can't put one single coherent sentence together when she's asked a question. What she thinks are sentences frequently lack either verbs or subjects or both, make no sense, and sound as though they've been plucked off half-remembered flash cards. The media look down on her because she's a creature of the Jerry Springer school of executive experience, got her post-graduate degree from Maury Povich, and thinks Susan Lucci is the most elegant woman in broadcasting. The media look down on her because she's a liar and a tool not "because she's a women".

“I’m just going to ask you one more time – not to belabor the point.” A.) Belabor: argue or elaborate (a subject) in excessive detail: belabor the obvious. B.) Point: an argument or idea put forward by a person in discussion: he made the point that economic regulation involves controls on pricing. Was Katie Couric making a point, or was she asking a question? Beyond the two pertinent and most recent examples of John McCain’s record, was Katie eliciting information in excessive detail, or just murdering the King’s English? Ms. Couric did in fact ask for a list, and Ms. Palin offered to provide it. What’s the correct answer? You’re right Katie, John is an obvious fake and I’m totally clueless. D’oh! Sorry for not being more straightforward, but it’s moose hunting season. Come-on up to the cabin; you can see the Kremlin from the roof.
