Interesting

posted by on September 26 at 14:15 PM

No one at the Stranger—judging from the lack of posts about the subject—really seems to give a flying fuck about Nickelsville. This despite the fact that we may all be homeless soon.

Discuss.

Just a question...If they shut down the homeless camp are they also going to take away the pink tents? You know, just for that added bit of Dickensian cruelty.

Not to defend the mindset, but the chain of events is all too predictable: tent city goes up, authorities immediately try to remove it.

People probably considered it nothing out of the ordinary, sadly.

Homelessness is a huge problem in King County; it impacts at least 8600 people here who are our friends and nieghbors (http://www.homelessinfo.org/onc.html).
But focusing so much attention on short-term emergency shelter draws attention away from the bigger problem: an inadequate supply of truly affordable housing, and not enough funding for services to prevent homelessness.

Dunno, #4. I can afford my apartment just fine.

Stinky hippies and drunks in pup tents?

Dan, I care about the issue and donate to solve the root causes, but I've reached my saturation level on stunts this week.

Pink is a pretty color for a tent, though, I'll give them that.

So clearly a stunt. Seems like a sideshow.

If you set up one of these tent cities, you pretty much have to view it as an act of protest, rather than a viable way of living. Like other protesters, you might get arrested for braking the law. If this was anticipated and the organizers try to use this to initiate some sort of action, maybe some good will come out of this, otherwise this is just another blip-on-the-radar.

Oh, Dan. We won't be homeless here in Baltimore. We've even got enough space to house any destitute relatives/friends turned out of their homes in the coming Greater Depression. And we've got a 1/4 acre to grow food on, too. Now if only I had stockpiled seeds...

See you soon, Balt-O-Matt. Can we bring Stinks?

My Partner told me this morning she might get arrested. Then around 11 I got a call from her telling me she thought she would get arrested.

Now her phone is off and I'm awaiting my one phone call.

She's got a home (granted one paid for by our amazingly stupid mortgage crisis) but wanted to make a statement.

I was refreshing Slog all day hoping someone would cover the story.

Glad to at least see you started a discussion.

Dropped by last night to see a friend supporting Nickelsville there. Nice folks, really nice. They sure picked an out of the way, contaminated, shitty little treelined vacant lot to put up the glorious fuschia tents. The only reason the city would need to keep that lot clear is so law-abiding truckers and taxpaying White Center closet cases can suck each other off in open-air peace as usual this weekend.

@11. Of course! Jasper would love to have a friend.

It's not a unique situation, really. We had the same thing here in Edmonton last year. Tent City. Google it. Exact same thing.

My parents were burned by an adverse possession case, so I'm not terribly sympathetic toward squatters.

Thankfully the Mayor backed down.

Why do Stranger staff not care? Rather than having us guess, why not answer the question yourself?

Does my tent have to be pink? And can I request a non-meth single? Preferably in the drinking section but in a non-vomit tent.

Why don't they just occupy one of McCain's houses?

My housing just sold to J.P. Morgan-Chase. It's giving me sleepless nights.
