The Los Angeles Times this week inaugurated its blog Culture Monster, and in today's entry by architecture critic Christopher Hawthorne, he contends not only with Brad Cloepfil's renovated "lollypop" building in Columbus Circle—but also with Ada Louise Huxtable's 1964 monument of criticism, written on the occasion of the original Columbus Circle building by Edward Durell Stone. Huxtable has yet to weigh in on the new building in the Wall Street Journal......

Jen, what a wonderful article. Thanks for the link.

That glass slash across the front of the building is ghastly. But then, a cut to its face is fine by me...I loved the old Stone building and used to visit it often when I lived in NYC, wayyyyyy back in the day.

The new one doesn't really do it for me.

Hey that's in my neighborhood! I must say I feel exactly the opposite of @1...

I found the old building cold, imposing, and unfriendly. The pictures don't do justice to the newly unveiled incarnation. It's rather beautiful in person, with interesting plays on reflection and texture. I say wait until you see it to judge it :)
