Amusingly, for the wingers Palin is more attractive and, uh, maverickish than ever, and we're all big meanies for not worshiping her.

Well, Bill, she didn't actually die at the podium and I think that shows real gumption on her part!

The Mccain camp understands how terribly weak Palin is. This is classic politics - paint her as an absolute clueless moron before the debate which lowers the expectations bar to nothing. The format of the debate that the Mccain camp demanded for Palin allows for her to give just a series of 2 minute sound bites without challenge. So, if she can memorize and spew some lines she will have exceeded the nonexistent expectations. By doing so the wingers will have enough to try and spin it as if she was a genius.

I still can't decide whether to be glad that the main stream media is finally coming around, or mad at them for taking this long. Zakaria hits the nail on the head there.

Leave it to John MaCain to have a campaign slogan that's not just a vague catchphrase ("Country First"), but, in his case, an outright lie.

@3 I have to disagree for two reasons: 1) I think almost everybody is both on to her and over her, frankly, and she's now in a place where she can do no right and 2) she actually can do no right, so she won't be saving herself or her place in history at the debate, she'll be using it as an opportunity to cement herself into a crypt of eternal humiliation.

@5 - I hope that you are right. I am just an eternal pessimist.

I'm not so sure. Conservatives in general - and Christian conservatives specifically - thrive on victimhood. How else can you explain their ridiculous assertion that the gays (roughly 10% of the population, and many of them Christian themselves) are persecuting Christians (which amount to something like 80% of the population)?

It could be that the Martyr Hood of Sister Sarah could be a stubborn vote getter. OR it could be that the majority of people in this country - fundies included - will see her for the ridiculous hack she is.

But I do agree that at this point all she has to do is show up and they will give her points for spunk. If they manage to plant a bug in her ear to feed her answers, she might actually turn out to be rather impressive. She is a former TV reporter, after all - she's used to that sort of thing.

Giving her points for spunk don't matter at this point. People are fixated on how low she can go.

I hope Biden uses kid gloves. Really. It wouldn't look good to be mean.

Remember how devastating Dan Quayle was to Bush I's chances. Er, wasn't. Palin's not going to matter much in the long run.
