Chicago: 27,930 crimes in the last 30 days.

Great objective reporting Atlantic. Nice pick-up Stranger.

But at least Chicago is an interesting place. Not some shithole Mayberry wannabe in the middle of nowhere.

It seems every place in the country wants to bill itself as the meth capital of something. It's how they rake in the federal anti-meth dollars.

Good point NaFun. I'm thinking being the meth capital of Alaska is sort of like being the porn capital of Utah.

What are the stats per capita? Quoting the number of crimes in Chicago doesn't mean anything if the stats are lower per person.

MSNBC consensus today:
Palin blew it out of the park. One of the most historic speeches ever. On a par with Obama's Iowa speech. Yes Joe and Pat on baord with that but also Mika and Mike Barnicle, admired how Pali's so real and she's just one of those people who connects. "You know that family," etc. etc.

Just in case the readers here want any view from outside the bubble. To be like, informed and stuff.

You're welcome.

Unity y'all,

You can tell what a metropolis this place is by this photo of City Hall, which amuses me:

I grew up in a town slightly LARGER than Wasilla and it seemed *tiny*, and still does. I visited recently and walked all the way across town and back and wasn't winded. I say this not to belittle small towns, but I don't recall the Mayor position being a big deal, and certainly not one that would qualify someone for national office.

Seattle paper takes drug-bust press release at face value? Credulous fucking hacks.

Alaska paper takes drug-bust press release at face value? Paper of record.

Does Wasilla's City Hall double as a dentistry?

I agree with Greg. I lived in Wasilla for a year and my parents still live there (for some reason unknown to me) since 1993. It's just one long dirty strip mall. The Mayor position would be a step up from managing Northgate Mall. Or maybe mayor of Aurora Ave, north of 99.

@7. Hey, PC. How's this for a bubble. The Detoit Free Press conducted a focus group last night. Here's how it played with actual Americans:

“I was completely underwhelmed. She was a Republican novelty act with a sophomoric script. It was not even a speech I would expect for a someone running for the local PTA, much less for vice president.”

-- George Lentz, 66, Southfield independent

“Who is Sarah Palin? I'm sorry but I still don't know anymore about this young lady tonight than I did last night ... The way it looks to me, she's the Republican vice presidential nominee for one reason: because Hillary wasn't selected.”

-- Mike Kosh, 38, West Bloomfield independent

"Sarah Palin is a self-described ‘pitbull with lipstick.’ She spent little time helping Americans learn who she is. She is a cool, poised speaker, but her speech contained few statements about policy or the party platform. … I am not convinced that Palin's experience as a mayor or governor in Alaska meet the qualifications to be vice president much less one stroke or heart attack away from being commander in chief.”

-- Ilene Beninson, 52, Berkley independent

“Nothing worked for me. I found her barrage of snide remarksand distortions to be a major turn off. She is not a class act. The most important point she made is that she will be an effective attack dog.”

-- Jan Wheelock, 58, Royal Oak independent

“Sarah got as much applause as Hillary did, and had a friendly, appealing appearance. Her delivery style reminded me of a high school valedictorian who also might have been a cheerleader. I thought she would appear more professional, more stateswomanly. She's no match for Joe Biden.”

-- Joellen Gilchrist, 64, Beverly Hills independent

You're welcome.

Didn't you all learn that Wasilla was the meth capitol back in 3rd grade? I love the kid who said his mom cooks the best meth in the valley. Mat valley pride yo!

Wasilla is a shithole in a lot of ways. It's just big box stores & bars, and nothing for kids to do except drink/get high and have unprotected sex while listening to country music. Then the next day they whine to their friends about how they broke their covenant with G-D and what a horrible person they are, etc etc. Repeat every weekend until you 1)get out of town 2)get pregnant or 3)die. It's like a lot of small towns that way, I would guess.

But until they find the meth lab in Palin's garage I don't think this sad reality has anything to do with her.

@13, for some reason when I heard Palin was picked I was thinking it would be like if Lynnwood had a mayor and they got chosen to be veep.

@7, Mike Barnicle is an MSNBC commentator? The guy who got fired for stealing George Carlin material and reprinting it as his Boston Globe column...?

Wow, there's an opinion you can take to the bank. Boy, what did Karl Rove think, over at Fox, since we're checking in with the lying scumbags...?

#15: agreed. But Lynnwood is a clean shithole, and Wasilla is a dirty, dirty shithole.

#12: that's about right. I was just at that City Hall last January when visiting my parents. Had to drop off papers for my mom's non-profit group. Sad sad sad. You'd think they could at least get a picturesque log cabin like the Visitor's Center. Wait, that's in Palmer. No, there's nothing picturesque about dirty ass Wasilla.

15/19: Lynnwood has 35,000 people, making it 5-7 times the size of Wasilla and larger than Juneau, Alaska or any other city in Alaska except Anchorage. The Mayor of Lynnwood has a lot more responsibilities than Palin did before becoming governor. And yeah, Lynnwood's one of the biggest shitholes in suburban Western Washington.

Palin delivered an evil, hateful, and snarky speech with considerable talent. She should not be underestimated--she might not be book smart but she's politically savvy. But the idea that she has any credible executive experience is laughable.

That area of Alaska is also pot growing country. It is the only area of the state that has farming of any kind, legal or not
