The scary thing is that Lohan might actually make a difference to some voters. Not a lot, but a small amount.

She may not be able to articulate as eloquently as a political analyst, or SLOG commenter, but her points are sound and will resonate with her age group and fan base without having to be further expressed.

No passport = no travel outside of Canada or Mexico (and she probably only got it when the new laws were passed about getting to those two countries). That shows lack of intellectual or cultural awareness, much less any curiosity to get that awareness.

And her generation is predominantly diverse in the matters of sex and homosexuality.

Given who her audience is, she writes eloquently enough to get her point across, and persuade any of her fan base.

As for only making a difference to a small number of voters, I disagree. Those who listen to her are those who probably aren't voting. The 18-25 year olds who still aren't involved. So people like her could very well bring new votes to the table.

I say go Lindsey!

Did you know that shape-shifting reptiles control the United States government? It’s true? Let me prove it to you. Now let’s you just drop them pants.

Go ahead, skip another lengthy post ifyou can't face what's going on.

The Washingotn Post article today entitled "Obama Campaign Begins Counterattack" perfectly illustrates the total lack of message coming out of our candidate. Read it on line, you won't find ANY compelling message Obama gave in a speech in Dover NH.
This is prime OBama territory the large UNH campus city on the coast.
Comments:
-- Here's the lead: "CONCORD, N.H., Sept. 12 -- Sen. Barack Obama and his campaign launched a promised counterpunch against Sen. John McCain on Friday, portraying him as an aging, out-of-touch politician who would cater to "fat-cat" lobbyists and continue President Bush's economic policies."
That's kind of vague, and is cnetered on McCain, not on the swing voter. He needs a lead message that tells the swing voter when he/she will get from an Obama presidency.
-- "They've been talking about lipstick and they've been talking about pigs and they've been talking about Paris and Britney," Obama told a boisterous crowd of 1,500 packed into a gym at a technical college here. "They will spend any amount of money and use any tactic out there in order to avoid talking about how we're going to move America forward to the future."

War may be bad for children and other living things, but there are times when peace is worse for children and other living things, and this is one of those times. Saying no to war in Iraq means saying yes to the continued oppression of the Iraqi people.
In the meantime, invading and rebuilding Iraq will not only free the Iraqi people, it will also make the Saudis aware of the consequences they face if they continue to oppress their own people while exporting terrorism and terrorists. The War on Iraq will make it clear to our friends and enemies in the Middle East (and elsewhere) that we mean business: Free your people, reform your societies, liberalize, and democratize... or we're going to come over there, remove you from power, free your people, and reform your societies for ourselves.
Go ahead, skip another lengthy post ifyou can't face what's going on.

Um, Senator, I've read three paragraphs of this story and so far YOU haven't spoken about how YOU"RE going to move America forward.
--"Attempting to shift the focus away from Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin" -- a focus aided and abetted by hordes of liberal and lefty bloggers all over the big cities of America -- "and to McCain, Obama quoted his opponent saying Thursday night that "it's easy for me to go to Washington and, frankly, be somewhat divorced from the day-to-day challenges people have."
So, the charge is McCain ahsn't spoken of how to move america forward andhe's out of touch.
Still waiting for Obama to tell us what he'll do.
--""We just can't afford four more years of what John McCain and George Bush consider progress." "
One, why soften it down with that what they consider progress line. Is it or isn't it? Two, this is the closest thing to an economic connection to swing voters you can find in this article and Obama just makes it be this vague, nonspecific charege of "we can't afford THEIR policies."
--"If Democrats were expecting a dramatic change in words, tone or temperament, they did not get it. While McCain attacked him as a pampered, fading celebrity, a sexist and a desperate bully, Obama stuck to familiar themes linking the senator from Arizona to Bush and Washington lobbyists.
Even after being prodded by the audience in Dover, Obama appeared reluctant to get too aggressive."
He can't even see around the corner enough to know that instead of praising Palin he should hsut the fuck up about her and get on his honed economic message. He can't even think ahead enough to realize that if he says senators yak, duh, that's going to be on a GOP TV ad and used against him.
Sorry for all the bad news.
But I've been reading for two days about this new aggressive coutnerattack form the Obama campaign, and it appears to be barely happening.
I gave up reading this WAshPo article after the first internet page. If he could't get his economic message out by then, I assumed he's not going to.
He really needs to go learn something form the Clintons. And why the fuck wasn't Hillary Clinton with him right there in NH?? They've both said they would do whatever he asks.

"Glenn Grasso, 39, a doctoral student, pleaded: "When and how are you going to start fighting back?"
Obama responded by calling McCain's ads "just fabricated" and "just made up," an answer that spurred some to shout out: "Lies." "
Boo hoo, waaaaa they're making stuff up. Waaaaa.
Again even the crowd has to prompt him to use that big scaredy adult word "lies."

--"Not everyone was reassured. "Truth be told, I'm extremely worried" about Obama's dip in the polls and McCain's attacks, said Jaimee Rudman, 30. Obama's use of McCain's words from a forum Thursday on volunteerism invited a biting response. McCain had suggested that he was out of touch as a way to defend Palin's record as a small-town mayor. But Obama also came to her defense at the forum, saying mayors fill potholes, trim trees and make sure the garbage is collected, while senators "yak." "
Great Mr. Eloquent Speechmaker. You just said senators "yak." Did you forget -- you are a Senator?
What an idiot.
I bet if we ran the primaries over again, he wouldn't have won. This is exactly what many of us predicted -- he's never been in a real fight against GOPsters and their attack machine.
Look, you're right. She is not ready. But:
1. This has never, ever worked as a message to convince anyone not to vote for a pres. candidate.

2. All the attention on Palin obscures Obama's message.
OR what it should be.
What is it by the way, anyone know?
He keeps saying he will cut taxes for 95% of taxpayers. What that means to teh average family in Scranton and Youngstown is a huge mystery. Is it a $100 tax cut for the average family? Or $1000?
No one has a clue.
Duh. Thank you Mr. Professor of Law. REally putting the passion into it. "Why yes, my listener, your suggestion as to my diction is correct. Let me adopt your suggestion. Now as to the avereed mendacities let me say this...."

3. I wouldn't focus on experience after OBama spent 19 months blasting the entire concept of experience and kept pointing out "Abraham Lincol dind't have experience, too."
This whole focus does not work.
4. Anyone got a reason why hitting up oil companies to pay more to Alaska citizens and moving along that gas pipeline doesn't count as experience?
As compared, to, say, one speech against a war, or ensuring that senators eat standing up, instead of sitting down, at lobbyist funded receptions.
I mean an additional $1500 or whatever it is in the pockets of each and every Alaskan, versus eating shrimp on a little plate with toothpicks standing up, and giving up the lobster Newburgh which you ahve to eat sitting down.
WHat's more relevant to the average voter?
Ever hear the expression pissing upwind?
Keep it up. The intratrade gap is about 6 or 7 points now, in favor of McCain, and it has grown ever since Palin was named and the left decided the way to win the election is to focus all fire on Palin.

He can't even see around the corner enough to know that instead of praising Palin he should hsut the fuck up about her and get on his honed economic message. He can't even think ahead enough to realize that if he says senators yak, duh, that's going to be on a GOP TV ad and used against him.

@7
hey thanks.

I see you don't respond to any or my points in any substantive way. Because ....I'm right, but you can't admit it.

It's pretty simple:

1. Obama was up, now he's down or tied.

2. That sucks, right?

3. There are actually reasons for this -- about which we can do things -- instead of ranting and whining and moaning and attacking messengers and dancing around about how conservative Palin is -- which motivates the liberal base -- as I noted, that's good for gettting more donations in the door -- but that's all.

4. In the end that's not enough to win the fucking election douchebag.

Why?

Oh, just look at history and stuff.

Facts and stuff.

Things like that.

To which you make no reference, I see -- because they would totally undermine your faux progresive stance.

My consistent theme that urban northern liberals who get defined as liberal via cultural issues don't win presidential elections.

Big duh, right?

And this:

They have to connect with swing voters on economic issues.

Now really. What's bat shit crazy about that?

Do your really disagree with that?

Or are you just ticked off that someone is pointing out rather obvious flaws and limiations in the Obama campaign right now, -- a defense reaction that seems cultish, tribal, unthinking and ultimately stupid and irresponsible -- much like the kool aid drinking right wing fundamentalists, or many other examples of groupthink/resistance to criticism.

Your total failure to rebut or even discuss is an implicit acknowledgement that what I say makes a lot of sense.

And hey == I've always said -- we could eke out victory even with no change in course, but the point is to ENACT that sweeping Change We Need -- so it's BETTER to win sweepingly and to win lots and lots of Senators and stuff like that.

Wow, what a bat shit crazy idea -- this election actually leads to Governing and Passing Laws and Budgets and Setting Policy and Things Like That.

And winning BIG is better than winning SMALL.

Wow man, what a crazy fucking idea!

So amigo if you disagree with me, say why. It'd be interesting to have, you know, real dialogue and stuff.

Instead of th typical Seattleite passive aggressive response of mocking and making fun, but never actually engaging and having the conflict.

And btw:

What's YOUR Plan for OBama/us to do better?

To simply continue sneering at Clintonites, mocking Palin, saying she's a nazi and all that stuff that -- btw -- hasn't really been working?

Do speak up. The floor is yours. We await your lucid commentary eagerly.

I like anyone am sometimes wrong about things but I must say most of what I've said has been spot on, and most of what some of us predicted about Obama is exactly what's coming to pass (in sum, he's not so Vastly Electable, he will not Change the MAp all that much, he has little experience dealing iwth teh Big Mean GOP Attack Machine, etc.)

Really. Go ahead. Take something I've said, and rebut it. I'd love to stand corrected.

__________________________
OK now for today's comments.

1. real clear politics shows Obama continues his decline; their electoral map shows McCain ahed with 227 electoral college votes to 207. The took Minnesota with 10 ECV out of the Obama column.

That's called a fact, or what passes for one in the social sciences folks. Don't shoot the messenger, ok?

2. Thesis:
this slide is because Obama campaign and fellow travelers on liberal blog sites are not connecting with voters, due to focusing on Palin and cultural issues, or even Bush, or even "lying" WITHOUT explaining to any swing voters who Obama WILL MAKE THEIR LIFE BETTER IN ECONOMIC TERMS.

So keep up the focus on Palin. During the whole time this has been happening, OBAMA HAS BEEN SLIDING.

So the evidence is: IT'S NOT WORKING.

3. Corroboration: Clarence Page today -- sort of on point, but still not getting it totally:
"First, he needs to get serious. He needs to remind voters of what's at stake."

Ayup, but Clarence, like Obama, and like most of Slog, fails to say WHAT IS AT STAKE.

"He needs to remind Americans of how the nation voted for a nice small-town sort of guy in 2000 and 2004 and look at what it got us. Eight years later, jobs and home mortgages are down, budget deficits and fuel prices are up and our foreign policy is best described as "Shoot from the hip.""

OK getting sort of economic but nothing is described in tangible/specific terms relevant to a swing voter.

Like "McCain will cost you the $1000* in tax cuts I will give you, because he sides with the REpublican liars and looters who are stealing your economic future [pivot to green economy, college help, health care help etc.] [*does anyone actually know what is the Obama tax cut to the average family yet? It's still a big fucking mystery. Let the swing voter see it, fel it, smell it. When you say "my plan brings tax cuts to 95% of all families it sounds like you are in a class at the Columbia School of Public Policy or something--it does not connect. @7 do you reall disagree with what I am saying, hmm?]

"With that in mind, Obama should not let the niceties of liberal political correctness prevent his campaign from tying McCain and Palin to Bush."

Big fucking duh. Don't be a wuss. Got it. Chronic syndrome of Democrats and liberals, even @7 who is such a wuss he/she can't actually take on what I'm saying and only mocks like a little child.

"Third, Obama needs to put the Clintons to good use. I don't know what Obama and Bill Clinton discussed in their private Sept. 11 lunch in New York. But Obama should have had his big ears tuned in to advice from the master on how to reach those voters who have been the slowest to embrace the senator from Illinois as "one of us.""

Clarence then calls on OBama to make use of his "strongest surrogates while Obama and Sen. Joe Biden, his running mate, campaign elsewhere."

Exactly what I said.

Get the Clintons out there campaigning in those swing voter/swing counties, and go take notes from Billdawg on how to talk economics to get the swing voters.

@7:

Tell us why that's wrong.

Go ahead.

Argue. Dialogue. Dispute. Refute.
Show us your plan. Tell us why your plan is better, and convince us all.

Or shut the fuck up.

Gallup . com on congressional races being suddenly competitive:

"A potential shift in fortunes for the Republicans in Congress is seen in the latest USA Today/Gallup survey, with the Democrats now leading the Republicans by just 3 percentage points, 48% to 45%, in voters' "generic ballot" preferences for Congress. This is down from consistent double-digit Democratic leads seen on this measure over the past year."
