Headline of the Day

Slog tipper Nick was disturbed by this BBC headline and wanted to nominate it for HOTD…

Designer vagina trend ‘worrying’

But I found the photo used to illustrate the story infinitely more disturbing…

When I worked at Planned Parenthood as a professional abortionist, cosmetic vaginal surgery was a requirement once I was done with her.

...the most established vaginal cosmetic procedure was reduction labioplasty - a procedure to make the labia smaller - which is requested by women either for aesthetic reasons or to alleviate physical discomfort. "Women want to emulate the supermodel. It's part of a trend. But they should know that all surgery can be risky.

The supermodel thing is completely puzzling. Do people really want their vaginas to look like a supermodels? What the hell does that even mean, anyways?

what does a supermodel labia look like? and how often are women flashing their labias to be uncomfortable about how they look.

What's to beautify? It's a gash. Now, a cock, on the other hand...

Kidding! KIDDING! Fag joke! (runs away screaming...)

"Does this vagina make me look fat?"

...and meanwhile, back in Seattle, the women can't even be bothered to tuck in their gut.

This freaks me out. Why can't people be, you know, content with the way their genitals look? Is it really some kind of competition?

Not that I don't find this pretty bizarre, but how is it any worse than breast implants or facelifts?

Its time to stop stating the number of Google results as if it means something. So what, you found 45,000 hits for "cosmetic vaginal surgery". Bfd. The only people who care about this are people who print out their emails.

Designer vagina? I hardly know-her-vagina!

Dan's right. The headline is horrible, but the photo made me cross my legs. I know I don't have a vagina, but those little scissors could still do a lot of damage.

@10. People getting breast implants and face lifts probably do so mostly because it will make them more attractive to other people (the general public). But, a "prettier" vagina is sort of a stupid concept.

I get vaginal surgery if something serous happened to you during childbirth, but to make the external part of the vagina (labia) look better? That's pretty ridiculous, unless you're truly deformed.

this worrying trend of women doing whatever they want to their bodies has got to stop!

@18: Just because women won't let YOU do whatever you want to their bodies doesn't mean they shouldn't be able to. THEIR bodies.

Hey, at least vaginal cosmetic surgery actually works, unlike all of the m@le enh@ncement pills and procedures.

@10,

For one thing, it can cause vaginal pain, making sex just a wee bit uncomfortable.

#23, i was joking of course. imagine a headline, "penile implant trend 'worrying'" or "penis pump trend 'worrying'". it would never happen, even though penis surgeries are probably more common, because almost all people consider men to be human beings.

@28: Being human is overrated. You are right though; sorry for the snappy attitude.

I dated someone once who had a very curved penis and I asked him if he could get it fixed, surgically. Maybe all these women are reacting to insensitive comments from overly critical people like me.

Having watched my wife get an episiotomy (I still cringe just thinking about it), I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would allow scissors to snip off the labia (which have got to be a hell of a lot more sensitive than the perineum) for purely cosmetic reasons. I mean, it's one thing if they are so big they are causing pain during sex or seriously interfering with daily activities that are important to you, but damn - keep the scissors away unless they really have to be there.

As for men you encounter who don't like your mudflaps, tell them if they don't like them, they can fuck themselves instead of you.

@19 @1's comment was a joke referring to the book and movie "Dead Ringers" about twin brother batshit crazy gynecologists. It has a good deal of camp value, give a look.

This idea has been around fat least since Dušan Makavejev's "Sweet Movie". Hell, there were ads for this in the alt/weekly papers in SF/LA during the 90's. I don't see a big dif between piercing one's labia and getting surgery. If it's your body, have fun.

@26: Those comments are terrifying.

i love sex but cant stand for a guy to really touch me and it has to be completely dark. i can hardly even look at myself i am so disgusting. i feel like men completely judge you like the painter on the uk channel 4 programme the perfect vagina. i want one day to have sex with the lights on and to be able to let myself go completely. anyone who thinks this procedure is stupid should not slag anyone else off but be grateful that they either have a nice vagina or have the confidence to love themselves no matter what they look like.
