Slog - Comments on "[He] kept taking Jack up to the end, when the (sic) both blew out on a six year climax"

Annie Proulx is very upset to discover that there's Brokeback Mountain fanfic online. The Guardian has some samples. There's the title of this post, of course, and also this: "Everything about Jack and his jeans disturbed and tormented Ennis that summer of '63 until all he could think of or see was blue" Proulx says: "There are countless people out there who think the story is open range to explore their fantasies and to correct what they see as an unbearably disappointing story," she told The Wall Street Journal. "They constantly send ghastly manuscripts and pornish rewrites of the story...

As a HUGE fan of Brokeback Mountain, I would think the author would be flattered that her story has resonated with so many people in such profound ways. Her story very well could have been panned, or even ignored, sitting on shelves collecting dust, not being thought of or talked about by anyone.

I actually can't tell if she's upset that people are writing fan fiction, or that she receives such a barrage of this writing on a constant basis. Either way, lighten up, you curmudgeonly old hag, and try being a little more humble and grateful.

"They constantly send ghastly manuscripts and pornish rewrites of the story to me, expecting me to reply with praise and applause for ‘fixing’ the story."

Well, I don't know if "fixing" is her assumption or a phrase a fan wrote, but I can certainly see why *that* part would be insulting. People, please, don't SEND your shit to the author. Never ask an author to read your stuff, jeez (*especially* using her own characters). Protocol.

Comment by east coaster

I'm with Gloria- You NEVER send your fanfic to the canon author. That's a big no-no because the best defense fanfiction has against people who don't like it is the "If you don't like it, don't read it" argument. I don't buy the anti-fanfiction argument that authors have sole rights to their characters from copyright and therefore can legally forbid people from writing fanfic, because the purpose of copyright law is to protect creators' incomes and fanfiction does not damage their ability to make money off their creations in any way. Still, we ought to be sensitive to the fact that some authors find fanfiction, and especially the erotic variety, offensive by not rubbing it in their faces.

Comment by did i do this rite

Bellevue Ave slunk into his computer chair after a long day of working at the design review board. His drooping eyelids clearly communicated a life full of disappointment.

Mr. Poe peeked around the kitchen pantry to see if Bellevue Ave was in the mood for pleasantries. He guessed wrong.

"Welcome home lover!" Mr. Poe welcomed and cautiously approached the desk. "Would my honey like a backrub?"

Bellevue Ave spit out his fried tripe from Quinn's. His eyes were full of rage. "Do i look like I want a backrub?!"

Mr. Poe fell to the ground and shut his eyes as hard as he could, in a vain attempt to stop the tears from rolling down his heavily bronzed cheeks. "Why do you have to do this to me every Yom Kippur?"

Bellevue Ave let out a hearty guffaw, showing his yellowed teeth and clear signs of the gum disease, gingivitis.

"Because I hate you. I hate you and everything you stand for." Bellevue Ave slowly unzipped his camouflage-printed cargo shorts. "Now get over here before I get angry."

Bellevue Ave's snarl showed no joy, only evil. He squinted at his sniveling lover. "You won't like me when I'm angry."
