“Governor Palin was right on the issues”

McCain207.jpg

Yesterday, WSCH (the Maine NBC news affiliate) anchor Rob Caldwell interviewed John McCain. (I’m not going to embed the video here because it starts automatically, but you should go to Politico and watch the whole thing.) For the most part, the interview was about Sarah Palin, because John McCain has become Sarah Palin’s surrogate in this campaign, which is fucking sick. I’m proud of old Rob, who’s been the news host in Maine since I was a kid: he keeps on McCain about Palin’s credentials. Due to time constraints, Caldwell does let McCain go on the stupid allegation that since Alaska is “right next to Russia,” it helps Palin’s foreign policy credentials, but it’s not a puffball interview.

This interview reminds me of two things: McCain is going to have to retake the top of the ticket between now and the election. And McCain is a fucking terrible candidate. He sounds like a dithering old man, his sentences don’t make sense half the time, and he can’t answer a question directly because it would make him look bad if he did. I especially like the way he’s nervously twiddling his thumbs at the bottom of the frame the whole time—I’m pretty sure he thinks it’s off-camera. This interview gives me hope. Thanks, Rob Caldwell. You’re clearly Maine’s pre-eminent news-guy.

"... Anyway, about my washtub. I’d just used it that morning to wash my turkey, which in those days was known as... a walking bird. We'd always have walking bird on Thanksgiving with all the trimmings: cranberries, injun eyes, yams stuffed with gunpowder. Then we'd all watch football, which in those days was called 'baseball'..."

I guess the question I have is, are the people who need to be watching this, in fact watching this and all the other clips that show the ineptness of the GOP ticket. And, if they are watching it, is it actually making one whit of difference, or are they all simply in love with Sarah, and that is the end of the story. And the Dem ticket, frankly.

My point is, this stuff is great to see, but for the most part we are the fucking choir here. We get it. Electing McCain would be bad, bad, bad. But our getting it isn't really important.

I'm getting really worried we are going to have 8 more years of GOP control. Part of me almost wants to see it happen so all the Hilltards and libtards see what it means to not support party.

"We can’t bust heads like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to tell ‘em stories that don’t go anywhere - like the time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so, I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on ‘em. ‘Give me five bees for a quarter,’ you’d say.
Now where were we? Oh yeah - the important thing was I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn’t have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones.."

The fact that he was twiddling his thumbs is awesome. That’s what my 87-year old grandmother does, whenever she’s just sitting.

Brad: Don't be stupid. That's exactly what people were saying 8 years ago--if Bush wins, at least people will learn their lesson about not supporting people like Nader. Who cares about people learning their lessons? We need to just win the goddamn election.

four to eight years of looking at that ugly mug and disturbing smile? reason enough to vote against him.

Brad is right. Hills and her peeps did a great DIS-SERVICE to the party. If McCain wins they will only have themselves to blame when their vaginas are being held hostage. I, on the other hand, will be in Costa Rica with Condi.

"Energy, she knows more about energy than uh, probably anyone else in the United States of America." - John McCain

I lambasted ABC News yesterday because in their Happening Now video selections, there were something like 8 Obama video clips and 1.5 for McCain. All the Obama videos had him at a podium with two flags or strutting around, face forward in a town hall. McCain was shown in a town hall but with his face to the crowd and a camera angle on the back of his head.

Come to think of it -- I wonder if McCain is doing real town meetings where is actually immersed in the crowd and Obama is posturing in front of a studio audience.

Things that make you go hmmm....

Scenario: McCain wins, then dies in office, and Sarah Palin is president. Imagine it. She would make Bush look like FDR

"And McCain is a fucking terrible candidate. He sounds like a dithering old man, his sentences don’t make sense half the time, and he can’t answer a question directly because it would make him look bad if he did."

Yet he's currently beating Obama. What does that say about Obama?

I predict the debates will seal it for Obama. No way McCain will be able to hold his own when voters see them side by side.

@18: the debates won't seal it. it will be more "the liberals are looking down on mccain/palin just because they're stupid & unqualified. they think they're better than you!".

@19,

That might work for Palin, but McCain isn't just dumb. He's also gross and unlikable. The average American isn't going to be enticed to vote for crazy grampa just to stick it to the elitists.
