Good God!

An actual breakthrough in Zimbabwe:

Zimbabwe leaders Robert Mugabe and Morgan Tsvangirai sign power sharing deal
Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe and the opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai have signed a power-sharing deal in Harare designed to solve the political and economic crisis crippling the country.

Although details of the agreement have not been revealed, it is widely expected to split control of the security forces between Mr Mugabe’s Zanu-PF party and the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).

The deal has made Mr Tsvangirai prime minister and given him the chair of cabinet meetings. The two rivals must now share out cabinet posts between their allies.

I’m in a state of shock. As Zizek would say: The impossible became possible.

The opposing parties, despite electoral irregularities and fraud have negotiated a mechanism to work together which is more than we can say in the US.

I'm much happier with Mugabe halfway out of power than completely in power.

Here's hoping for the other half soon.

Wow. After months of my optimism being crushed at every turn in the lead-up to and aftermath of the election, I never expected talks between ZANU-PF and the MDC to come to anything.
For the sake of all Zimbabweans and their neighbors, I hope Mugabe continues to show respect for the well-being of the country he helped build a generation ago.

Wow! This is truly unfathomable. How is it that Mugabe could be convinced to agree to this? I would love to know what went on behind the scenes... His military support must be waning.
