Not sure who coined the term—a Google search shows it spreading like wildfire since yesterday, and Wonkette’s already made it a subject tag—but I wholeheartedly approve.

She's really not that attractive, people.

@2 is barbie herself?

@2: for a republican, she's about as good as you'll get. "independents" are so much more attractive, but the feeble-mindedness makes them difficult to be around.

@1 - And the current VP is in Georgia kick-starting the next Cold War.

"This laughing stock of a woman quickly became one of the largest millstones around the neck of the Republ....."

(BZZZZZZZZZT) "Who is Caribou Barbie?"

"Right you are, good answer!"

I like "pit bull with lipstick" so much better.

I just heard "Moosemeat Barbie" only moments before seeing the Caribou one....hmmmmm, which one do I like better?

I've been hearing the term on Stephanie Miller's talk show since Tuesday. My bet is that she (or one of her co-hosts) coined the phrase.

My wife casually dropped "Caribou Barbie" that in a conversation yesterday and it knocked me flat on my ass it was so perfectly funny.

Here's hoping that it catches on to the public at large…like then Obama is a muslim thing.

Yeah -- it was either Stephanie Miller or Maureen Dowd.

That's sexist. I'm telling Erica!

That is extremely offensive to Caribou. What on earth did they do to be linked with this disgusting person?

I'm not sure why this is a good term to use. Unless there is some sort of political barbie doll I am unaware of, 'barbie' suggests pretty, female, and shallow. The first two aren't negative traits. If you want to say shallow, say it (and preferably back it up with something (shouldn't be hard)). 'Caribou Barbie' is a sexist term. I'm not a fan of the lady, but substantive criticism isn't so hard that we need to resort to name calling.

RL we're having some fun...a concept that seems to have been forgotten in these modern times. Little things like this give us a MUCH needed laugh. Let us have our fun. And just for you, we'll call her "Shallow Caribou Barbie." That way we still get our chuckle and we appease you at the same time :)

I like "Snowbilly Barbie"

"Caribou Barbie" works as well as it does because it rhymes with Malibu Barbie, one of the more successful/popular Barbie models. I agree that it's totally sexist, but find it clever and on-the-mark enough to not be offensive. Other variations on the Barbie theme haven't had the same ring.

"caribou barbie" isn't really an offensive term... it's obviously the image palin and the republicans are trying to project of her. "pitbull with lipstick" is so much better and her own words though.

no more sexist than the sexism found in any South Park episode

You're either a dike or very gay!

Actually, I should point out the current VP, according to today's front page of the Wall Street Journal, is being investigated for fraud in connection with Halliburton ...

@23: He is definitely neither of those things.

I heard the term from a friend, and I can't stop laughing about it.

@ Aislinn: I didn't get the rhyming bit until you mentioned it. It is more clever that way. Thanks. I suppose I should relax about it, and not assume the worst of folks using the term.

OMG - she DOES look like an old Barbie I had when I was young! Now I know why she looked so familiar! How creepy!

An actual pitbull with lipstick would be a pretty grotesque thing to look upon, don't you think? I like Caribou Barbie. It sounds so wonderfully vacuous, and puppet-like – and the woman herself, on the basis of her address, is clearly deliciously backwards. Yes, I think Caribou Barbie could catch on...

The term Caribou Barbie came from the live blog
on Stephanie Miller's web site.

Stephanie Miller coined this term on her radio show, along with "Grampy McSane".

Stephanie Miller did indeed coin the term "Caribou Barbie." Along with Grampy McSAME. Get it? :)

@2: I'm not an American, so maybe someone can explain to me: how does physical attractiveness IN ANY WAY relate to fitness for political office?

Posted by pj | September 5, 2008 7:34 AM

Yeah, that's cute.. Its kind of like - Obambi, The Dali-bama, Obamassiah, Dr. NObama, Obama Bin Laden etc, etc... But I'm sure you all don't find that quite as amusing and might even be "SHOCKED" by such insolence! I guess insulting an accomplished woman who you disagree with is what passes for "progressive" these days... Oh well, que, sera, sera.

I think the term was coined by the Stephanie Miller show.

I think supporting nominating someone for VP simply because they are a woman is sexist. The job should go to the most qualified person who is able to take over as president in a heartbeat. Caribou Barbie, the Killa from Wasilla is by no means the most qualified.

Caribou Barbie is the perfect name for Gov. Miss Congeniality. She must have a string hanging off the back of her neck because she just keeps parrotting the same stupid one liners over and over. Not an original thought in that head.

Yes, I'm reasonably sure it first came from the (Air America) Stephanie Miller show.

Marginally qualified if at all for US-Veep, she was obviously chosen for her "Barbie and Frontier Persona". As such "Caribou Barbie" is right on target, and just as aptly sexist and cynical as intended by those who chose her to run for Veep. Her Acceptance Speech was the worst collection of blatant lies, misrepresentations and empty innuendo I've ever heard.

It's ALL a sick joke; enjoy it while you still can.

The term is an insult to Barbies worldwide. "Caribou Barbie" was coined by Stephanie Miller on The Stephanie Miller radio show, stephaniemiller.com
Tune in, live stream, and podcast for some good laughs over the hypocrisy of politicians! If you don't receive the show in your town, request it, and support your progressive radio advertisers.

Caribou Barbie definetly needs a change of hairstyle; It looks like a yearbook picture. Maybe that updo is still in style in Wasilla.
Either way I don't think she is the most qualified candidate for VP.

Stephanie Miller is syndicated, not Air America. Though her syndicated show is picked up by many Air America affiliates.

Rush Limbaugh is an idiot!!!! He's a right wing loon who just throws crap out there trying to make Democrats look bad.

Bill O'Reilly is an idiot!!!! He's a right wing loon who just throws crap out there trying to make Democrats look bad.

George Bush is an idiot!!! Period. :)
