McCain definitely lost a half point on attempting to suspend the debate - made him look like a coward as Obama pulls ahead on this issue.

But he could very definitely gain it back tonight, and much more.

Responding to crisis is a multi-day thing and we will definitely get the best measure of the candidates core staff to do same tonight.

I have to be in a car heading out of town tonight and I am pissed... I know I'll get to listen on NPR, but I really wanted to see the beads of sweat roll down McCain's face.

See, but it *did* kind of work, at least in one sense: if McCain does poorly, he can blame it on the fact that he was busy working on the financial crisis, and didn't have time to prepare for the debate properly, since it wasn't as important as our country's financial state.

It's the age-old technique of lowering expectations pre-debate.

I'm not saying I agree with the reasoning above, but you know we're going to hear that spin if he doesn't do well.

It's clear that there was no Plan B (so to speak) for McCain. He gambled on the media believing that the dog ate his homework, and it failed. Obama's gonna pound him tonight.

For McCain to not self-destruct completely tonight, he would have to be a) a good politician, b) sane, c) even-tempered, d) have good judgmnet or e) some combination of that above.

He is and has none of those things. It's over.
