They balanced each other out. I think it worked well because they both threw themselves headlong into any emotion they had. @3 Really? For me the best moment in the entire trilogy was when Darth Vader says "No. I am your father." Of course, I'm ancient so I saw Empire Strikes Back in the theater the day it was released and that line was a shocking surprise.

After the horrendous prequels and some adult re-evaluation of some of the failings of the classic trilogy, I've become somewhat "meh" about Star Wars at this point, but that moment still makes my jaw drop. Definitely, in my mind, the realest feeling moment of the whole series, and among the best moments in popular cinema.

I was reading that Han was originally supposed to answer "I love you too," which Harrison Ford hated because it felt so fake in the context of the character, so he ad-libbed that line instead. Probably didn't hurt that he and Carrie Fisher were shtupping like rabbits and doped to the tits in real life while they were filming that movie, which probably added some emotional heft to the whole thing.

Between that and the "Can I just fucking shoot him?" story from Raiders of the Lost Ark," I think Ford wins the Genius Adlibs of the 80s award.
