Five Colleges in Six Years

The Sarah Palin story:

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) _ Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin attended five colleges in six years before graduating from the University of Idaho in 1987.

Federal privacy laws prohibit the schools from disclosing her grades, and none of the schools contacted by The Associated Press could say why she transferred. There was no indication any of them were contacted as part of the background investigation of Palin by presidential candidate John McCain’s campaign.

You guys have been served:

Dear Uptight,

I know you write for the Weekly, but I'm almost certain that I spotted you the other day in one of the armchairs at Honey Bear Bakery reading The Stranger! 'Fess up!

Spying Over My Cappuccino

Dear Spying,

It's not a hidden shame so much as a simple fact: I'm a Stranger reader. Let's face it, the sad, slow decline of the Weakly (oops!) has been going on since it was founded three decades ago by elderly classical-music fans.

I'm not saying that the Stranger is for everyone. Some of their stuff is PRET-ty out there. I'm talking wall-to-wall irreverence. Editorials written by croutons? Crazy nonsequiturs on the cover? Heidegger (!) cropping up on a regular basis in film reviews? Oui, si, and you bet. So, like I said, not for everyone. But for me, my breathing practice is my peace practice is my political practice. So I connect with their freewheeling edginess and bold youthfulness. I cheer when they send the tripe of mindless conventionality back to the kitchen of incredulous media hackery. They inhabit a sexy floating island of their own uniqueness, and extend an invitation to the rest of us to join them there, or to at least know we're on the right side as we applaud from down below.

I generally read the Fred Meyer circulars that fall out of other peoples newspapers.

Biden gives me hope.

GOD BLESS!

Let us know when you have news. You know, facts and stuff.

Oh and do you now have your own ranking system for colleges-- or are you just adopting the East Coast elite's ranking (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Penn, Dartmouth/CIA, Brown, Cornell, in that order, forever)?

Given how the main stream media coverd her speech last night they will probably pitch this as proof of a well rounded education.

Looks like a fact to me.

Also, ranking system? Wha?

Sarah Palin: a "special needs" candidate with an extra chromosome... for reform.

PC, your straw men are ceasing to be even thinly-related to the topic and discussion at hand. I suggest you change your handle again and take a small hiatus so at least a small portion of Sloggers forget who you are.

Geez. This actually does smack of some elitism, which sucks. Can we not fall prey, please?

I did 3 colleges in 8 years as a part time student. Does that make me more or less of a loser than Palin?

PC@7: no - Penn is #1, Harvard is #2.

John McBarf finished 800th in a class of 800 at the Naval Academy. Oh, yeah, his poppa was a big Admiral, otherwise the waster was gonzo.

A few days ago I ssuggested that NO Mc Cain will not dump Palin -- there were dreamy posters just hoping his choice was all a bad accident. Any changed views on that idea now?

And I have not clue who PC is - but find it interesting we post a bit alike - mommie called me the true devils advocate. I hate group think, wherein it is common here preside by pointy hats elenchos and Fnarf.

Obama better get it going, - to quote from someone Slogging a few days back -

"Game's on, lets roll."

Do you mean to say that if it is not Ivy League - shit - don't bother?

Snooty is a good word,

so is intellectual snob.

Except for Ken SCHUMAN, ex. dir. who runs Lambert House - underpaid, dedicated to youth services and Harrrvaaard grad. Wow.

Here's My Resume and I Never Flunked Out of Any of Them:
1990 while in HS: Clark College
1991-1992: Barnard College/Columbia University
Fall 1992: Cornish College of the Arts
Winter 1993: Seattle Central C.C.
Fall 1993: Barnard College/Columbia University
1994-1995: Washington State U. @ Vancouver
Spring 1995: Clark College
Summer 1995-Present: Portland State University

So, let's see...that is SIX different colleges in six years. I win! hahaha

PLUS I have been an undergrad longer than any human on the planet!!!

Yay! For! Me! I am a bigger loser than Palin! The Republicans should nominate me for President next time!!!

Oh yah, I have a B.S. in B.S. (hehe)

John thinks that if someone expresses an opinion, he needs to express a different one, regardless of its merits.

Having spent the majority of my professional career in higher education, there is validity to the concern about a student who transfers to multiple universities to complete a single baccalaureate degree. It is similar to the concerns any employer would have of a prospective employee who had multiple jobs over a relatively short period of time without reasonable explanation.

Furthermore, the ranking of universities and individual programs within universities is usually assessed during the accreditation evaluation and subsequent external reviews and is based on the caliber of education and research of the faculty, the requirements of the degrees, and the performance of the students. It's not coincidental that certain universities are in the top-tier. Top schools attract top faculty attract top students attract top funding and are, therefore, at the top.

It's not "elitism" to point out that this is a little weird. There could be a perfectly reasonable explanation for bouncing around so many colleges, but we certainly haven't heard it yet. The more interesting part, to me, is the fact that McCain's people hadn't contacted a single one of them.

what is significant is that she spent her college years shuttling between 2 of the most backwards-ass, ethnically homogenous, provincial, xenophobic places in the country. she doesn't know shit about the way cities work or who most americans are. she knows small towns full of white republicans & a smattering of native americans.

obama came from the hinterlands, but occidental-columbia-harvard shows a clear progression in achievment.

idaho-matanuska-susitna-idaho does not.
