Unfortunately, Obama needs to grow a pair and hit back hard. For a lot of people, being milquetoast about these kinds of things is not respectable.

Of course, I'm holding onto hope that this is part of a strategy... let the polls drop a bit, allow the Palin thing play out, save campaign money, get supporters nervous enough to donate more money, and then pound McCain relentlessly right before the debates and regain the momentum.

I hope.

I don't think Karl Rove ever does or says anything in front of a camera that isn't calculated. He may be himself creating distance from McCain, joining an already very loud chorus of media types calling McCain out on his lies, but Rove is so clearly associated with Bush in the minds of the public, couldn't this just be an attempt to create the perception that Bush and McCain differ on something? That McCain is such a "maverick" he goes against the mighty Rove's opinions? That's how it's supposed to look. Behind closed doors, Rove approves of all this and more. His acolyte Steve Schmidt is the one responsible for McCain's choices.

@1: Obama may be trying to let Palin-Mania run its course but he really needs to fight back and hard. Taking the high road didn't work for Kerry and focusing on the issues didn't work for Gore. Fortunately Obama has a good team who (I hope) know what they're doing.

"Rove has no respect for McCain". I can't help but think that is a compliment to McCain.

I agree with @2. Rove is likely saying these things so that McCain can claim that he (McCain) is in a different camp than Rove/Bush.

@12: Agreed, I think. Positive suggestions are always a good idea. I've not seen any recent stump speeches, but the last two ads I've seen on youtube are pretty hard hitting.

I'm thinking that Rove is angry at his pupil Steve Schmidt for defying orders and going with Palin (yeah, the decision was made FOR McCain). Rove is smart enough to get off of the Titanic, then piss on the survivors from his MSM lifeboat.

What I can't figure out is why anyone has *any* faith in the American people after the last eight years. Face it, McCain is lying his ass off and he's going to win.

Remember before the DNC everyone was saying Obama needed to fight back but he stayed relatively quiet, that is until he got up on stage.

Well folks, the debates are coming. Obama doesn't have to fight back against the ads. He can just stand on the stage next to McCain and make him look silly.

It's interesting how the dems continually slam Carl Rove, until his statements reinforce their vitriol for the republicans. Actually, Rove said that BOTH dems and republicans ads went too far, but the dems just want to make it look like Rove said the Republicans went too far. I don't care what the media says, if you connect the dots, it's obvious that Obama's lipstick/pig comment, which came just days after Palin scored points with her pitbulll/lipstick statement, was an ugly sexist response from Obama. Now, Obama is crying that he was misinterpreted, while the media, once again assists him in playing the victim. The deck has been so stacked in favor of Obama, whether it's the media's refusal to vet Obama in the first place, to giving Obama free rides with Wright, Farrakhan, Rezko, Ayers, etc.. The media, as well as shows like The View, are continuing to show extreme bias against Senator John McCain, while kissing Obama's ass.
