2008 Dept. of Unfortunate Slips
posted by September 8 at 11:30 AM
onObama, in an interview with ABC News yesterday, accidentally spoke of “My Muslim faith.”
The slip was immediately corrected, but that, of course, hasn’t stopped the conspiracy theorizing.
Yikes.

I was watching yesterday and said, "Ah, shit" as soon as the words left his mouth.
Ouch.
it's over.
In context Obama's statement makes perfect sense and is not a slip. "John McCain has not talked about my Muslim faith". Yes, he should've inserted "alleged", but there are implied quote marks around "my Muslim faith".
This makes me want to go to sleep for several months.
oh my fucking god....
...BAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!
oh god. oh god.. oh my fucking god... i believes he's a christian but he seriously needs to understand freudian slips.
be shown on tv eating bacon... a pork chop.. HAM!!!
If McCain can talk about hot water bottles for babies and Palin can say she doesn't know what the VP does, I think this will be okay.
I hope, anyway.
Thanks Doug - I appreciate your description, since I can't watch the video at work.
This clearly illustrates the differences between Republicans and Democrats; Whenever a Republican politician makes any sort of flub, the Republican base glosses over it with the help of a little blind faith... Democrats on the other hand have to obsess and critique everything to the point of self-destruction.
Pity both sides can't find a compromise to their thought processes.
and liberals lose once again because they are chicken littles.
Ahhh, this is hilarious! All Hail John McCain!
Game over, man, game over!
My bloody god. You all need to calm the hell down. The last thing we need is idiots screaming "abandon ship!" at one of the biggest hopes we have.
You all should be ashamed. Give him your support or you will find Palin sitting in our President's seat- the least experienced president in the history of our country.
Unless edited by the crazy repubs I don't think it is that big of a deal.
Ugh, no need to go crazy over this, as I doubt it's the end of the world, but still. This was an easily avoidable gaffe.
It's over. Give up. Don't bother voting. Or if you do, vote McCain just cus it'll be funny. Dems lose the preznit office in a year when the outgoing republican president is at historic approval lows. You guys suck. SUCK. Too bad your party has all the right ideas, you'll just never undestand that PEOPLE DON"T THINK. STOP treating them like adults, they aren't. They're irrational, they can't understand sentences with big words. If you can' boil your policy down to 'USA! USA!', you'll lose. Muslim is, of course, != USA. The states are a lost cause. Your economy is shit and only getting shittier. 5 years from now the euro will be 3x to 5x the dollar (no matter who the president is). If you want to continue your lifestyle, better get to emigrating; those things take time, and the number of applicants is continually increasing for a smaller pool in other countries.
I don't think this is that big of a deal, especially if you put in context. I like this video better:

Although, I'm sure the right won't put it into context.... but not everyone is a Muslim hating idiot.
Most unfortunate. Still, I haven't yet seen it on the telly so......?
McCain hasn't talked a lot about anyone's faith. That sounds like what they were talking about in this video anyway.
Oh my god - did anyoen bother to read the comments on the Times story? Who ARE these people? Seriously. Disgusting.

Well, that was damn stupid and Obama is off his game. But will it matter? None of us know at this point. It will probably come up in a smear ad in a couple of weeks so we should all be ready for it.
Word to Obama, pull your head out of your ass and watch your step. This election is yours to win or loose; stop fucking up!

This wasn't a slip up. That would mean that he *accidentally* said "...my Muslim faith." It was intentional. The interviewer made it worse, by making it SEEM like an accident. It wasn't-- for some reason, though, Obama didn't emphasize the, like, sarcastic nature of what he was saying. He should have said "...my ALLEGED Muslim faith" or added air quotes around Muslim or something. Anything. Taken out of context, it does sound like he's claiming to be Muslim.
Idiot Christians believe that just because your father is muslim, your are muslim. That in Islam the father determines the culture of the children, therefore a muslim father has muslim children.
This is ridiculous superstitious nonsense. Islam is a cult of idiots.
Only in Judaism does the MOTHER determine the religion of the children. All Jewish women give birth to Jews. That is because the Torah is true and the Christian bible and Koran are for idiots.
All Muslims can convert to Christianity no problem. Only in Judaism doe a child's parents determine the child'e religion.
The democrats had their chance. Many good candidates there for the choosing.
But no. They have to push it. They have to continue to be all-or-nothing. They still don't realize that not everyone thinks like they do.
And then they get what they deserve. 4 more years of McBush.
The clip can't be used in a Republican attack ad, given the context.
David, none of the major media is reporting on this right now. If they're not doing this now, they probably won't tomorrow or later. This has already been passed over.
Palin's religious batshit craziness on the other hand...
@28 - I've missed you, Issur
DOUG @4 is right--this isn't even a slip. Sure, the word "alleged" would have helped, but he wasn't referring to his faith; rather, he was making reference to a perception of his faith which has thus far seemed to count against him.
Of course, while we're defending him from this sort of rhetorical chicanery, we MIGHT want to point out how irredeemably bogus it is that the possibility of his being a Muslim is something that requires defense.
So what you're saying is, if Obama says the word "Muslim" any time between now and election day, the Democrats lose? That is fucking retarded talk.
At least he didn't look freaked out when he said it.
Well, this conservative sees it as a simple slip of the tongue that anyone could make. It shouldn't disqualify him in anyone's consideration. There are things, IMHO, that do disqualify him (at least as of now), but Islam in the family isn't one of them.
Issur!!! You're back!
Have you met John Bailo yet?
If it was NOT a slip of the tongue by Obama, then why did he say "Christian" in response to S's prompting as though accepting the word "Christian" as what he meant to say?
