he's most definitely not OK, which is why he's great. But I think moving to NY is messing with his head, which it should.

They played Heart of Glass, Sister Golden Hair and Centerfield.

Guess we exurbians are just happier...

Something is up with John. He had a wierd interlude on the air earlier this week in which he talked briefly about being depressed and then was off the next day.

Troy has been filling in, hopefully it's nothing serious. Talk all the shit you want about KEXP, but John is a nice guy and deserves the benefit of the doubt.

Living in NY is heavy.

Life is to some people unbearable
Committin suicide and thats terrible
Was it much too much or nothing big?
If ya live my life, youd be fightin to live
Life is to me my main asset
I be doin all right and keep it just like that
Chill out at the house and pump that bass
Im tryin to get rich as I rock the place
Everybodys got that same old dream
To have big money and fancy things
Drive a brand new benz, keep your banck right here
Never hear me stutter once because I talk real clear
Its on you, homeboy, watcha gonna do?
You can take my advice and start workin, fool
Or you can close your ears and run your mouth
And one day, homeboy, ya soon find out

If he's like me at all - and this is probably the only way in which I approach being like the hardworking John - he gets a little glum about the receding hairline every now and again. Hope it passes soon for both of us.

I woke up to Sinead O'Connor's "The Last Day or Our Acquaintance" yesterday. hmmm....
And today, "Letdown" by Radiohead....

If song titles were signs of something, then....

@6 - KJR. I never would have guessed.

Brendan get out of my head! hahahaha. I was just thinking this today, wondering why Troy has been subing for him, why he rarely is talking on air...I hope he is ok. I love John so much, and respect him tremendously.

John Bailo not only has bad political taste, he has crappy radio station taste too. Go figure.

god forbid theres some early 90s eclecticism. Maybe you were 5 during the early 90s?

The Morning Show is just not the same since John moved to NY. The banter is anemic, the music is more programmed and John takes large numbers of days off the air. I also really miss the old on air plugs by local Seattle people.

I never thought I would miss hearing John talk about his son being in the studio or Greg Nickels plugging water conservation...

John wants to tell us that he's sad he only makes $120k/yr, he's upset that he mans a corrupt and ill-managed piece of poop (KEXP, that is), and he's sad that the move to New York was a bad idea (very few in NY give a fuck about KEXP -- among those that even know what it *is*) and the move has turned out to be a huge waste of money -- money that KEXP *begs* its listeners to cough up. To, uh, pay John's salary & finance his & his family's move to New York. For why did he do that?

And now he'd like the UW to revoke KEXP's charter.

He might be depressed. Wait -- is booze a depressant?

@ 19 - I agree 100%.

I'm starting the campaign to make Troy Nelson the new morning DJ!

For you guys whining about KEXP... try living in a place with no good radio. Try living in a place with 4 classic rock stations in range, and another 4 quickly audible with a 15 minute drive out of town.

Seattle is spoiled.

Yesterday we woke up to Velvet Underground-- that's not much incentive to get out of bed, more like incentive to lie in bed and shoot up. More Public Enemy in the morning, please!

#22...yes yes yes - some new blood - or new older blood - in all of KEXP's daytime people would be refreshing. if not troy, get chili (sp) or rachel coz' the afternoon's on that station just blow. and blow hard!

Yeah, I was rockin out this morning too and thinking to myself that Head Like a Hole is pretty much the best NIN song every made.

That's probably not true if I were to really think about it but this morning with my sunroof open and my stereo blasting I was sure thinking it.

Public Enemy was just a bonus.

@23 you know, I have to admit I'd never heard of KEXP and I've lived in nyc for 10 years. But I basically gave up radio when I moved to nyc and realized the following:

1- most radio here was unbelievable terrible. Really not on par with the quality of everything else in this city. Seriously, I had way better radio in the middle of fucking nowhere, South Carolina in the early 90's.
2- whatever was not terrible couldn't be received on my radio because there was so much shit jamming the airwaves anyway
3- most of the time you can't listen to radio anyway, because you are underground.

of course then came internet & sat radio which solves all but #3 but by then I'd gotten out of the habit. Wonder where this John fellow is in NY? The weather sucks today but September is usually beautiful... Tell him to buck up, its a nice city but it takes some getting used to.

Pardon me for being absent and out of town, but WTF? John & the Richards Family moved to New York? boo! When did I miss that?
