Slog - Comments on Clarity

Larry King's interview with the symbol of American capital, Donald Trump: King: Obama or McCain, who would handle this better? Trump: Well, I know John McCain, and John McCain's a great guy, a tremendous guy. I've known him for a long time. And I'm with him, and I'm with him based on the fact that I have great knowledge of John McCain. Also, this is not the right time for tax increases and Obama wants to increase your taxes drastically. So this is not ... King: In all fairness, he says he doesn't. Trump: This is not the right time....

This would be Donald Trump, the short-fingered vulgarian, the guy who still owes how many billions of dollars he will never pay to the banks who financed his Atlantic City disaster and other traumas, the guy who is just a figurehead in his own company, and a total fraud merchant? THAT Donald Trump? Yeah. We care what he thinks.

The Obama plan calls for an immediate $1000 tax cut for middle families plus a $1000 energy rebate. Yet the talking point factoid that everyone uses is "Obama's plan will cut taxes for 95% of America." You see it repeated here.

Somehow Obama's plan to CUT TAXES AND PROVIDE REBATES WORTH $2000 isn't getting through the clutter.

Obama should totally own the title of tax cutter. Part of the reason he doesn't is because he doesn't SAY over and over he will cut your taxes one large and give a rebate one large. Here we have King repeating what Obama says over and over about the 95% which is a wussy, defensive, vague and unclear "message."

The first time I heard Obama say the figure $1000 was in his long, boring, 2 minute ad on the current crisis which brought in everything from negative campaigning to a new spirit of unity and shared responsibility blah blah blah....he's a master at "burying the lead."

Two thousand smackeroos. Ya think people know about that? That they believe it?

They don't.

Comment by RonK, Seattle

Of course Larry King misstates Obama's tax-cutting pledge (as do Obama and Biden and their surrogates on many occasions).

The operative promise is tax cuts for 80% of the people, and 95% of "working families" ... which is generally unfavorable for singles, childless couples, empty-nesters, students, retirees, and a few others.

Note also that Obama's promise is infeasible with respect to restoring active government and deficit reduction, and with respect to top-share incomes ability to avoid taxation. The next POTUS - Obama or McCain or McKinney - is going to raise most people's taxes, or we're going deeper down the fiscal vortex.

On the whole, however, flamingbanjo @ 4 nails it. Trump means "my taxes".

So the incredibly wealthy should not be taxed because they create jobs for people (who are heavily taxed instead) and if the Feds tax at the front end there won't be any jobs made? HUH? What's wrong with this picture? It is of course a lie that if the Feds tax billion dollar corporations they won't create jobs, the fact is they will create jobs. They will create jobs because they want to make money.

@19, This is Randian bullshit in its purest form.

As for corporate tax cuts heres my take on it; the problem isn't at the federal level rather it's at the state level. Every state is competing with one another to attract large companies to set up shop in their state. What they wind up doing is subsidizing businesses through either tax cuts or straight cash to the businesses and under the political guise of "creating jobs". That money to provide these incentives has to come from somewhere and it isn't coming from the untaxed company in state borders or from employees income taxes.

What an elitist. The rich were taxed at something like 90% in the fifties, and that was a prosperous decade. It's lower class and middle class consumption that really drives job creation in this country, and the rich deliberately overemphasize their own role to try to prevent a tax hike that could, God forbid, prevent them from buying that $300,000 dollar watch this year.
