“Can you twirl it?”

posted by on September 11 at 10:58 AM

I swear to God I’m not getting kickbacks from Plastic Logic, but here’s a video of their upcoming e-reader:

This is honestly the first e-reader I can see myself owning. It’s not perfect—I understand the complaints in the complaints from two days ago about it not being foldable, although I bet the next edition of the Plastic Logic reader will be—but it looks like the first draft of something really good.

Did she really say it is capable of handling business documents, and newspapers, and even books? Amazing.

It appears to be geared towards business presentation, not reading. Maybe that's just the way she was demoing it. Maybe it makes sense for magazines, too, but for books, it's too big. I would be interested in a device that thin that was the size of a Kindle, to load books on -- there are a LOT of books I'd like to read without having to take up shelf space with them, but it's got a ways to go before it beats the library book. Oh, and the inch-wide bezel -- hate that.

Let me know when the color version comes out.

I like that you subconsciously referred to the comments section as "the complaints".

If it is waterproof so I can read in the bath and capable of enlarging small type so I can read more easily I would consider buying one if it were avaialble at the right price.

What IS attractive about the kindle is that you don't need a computer to load it--the device accepts texts directly. You have the book forever--Amazon remembers you bought it and will re-down load it for free. I may soon be homeless, and the Kindle looks great to me as an inexpensive way to get & keep books without towing a shopping cart.

8 1/2 x 11 inches? That's HUGE! Why, that's the same size as a sheet of paper! NOBODY carries around anything that BIG these days!

Although I would LOVE to see the look on an accompanyist's face the first time some actor brings one in and plonks it down on the piano for their musical theatre audition.

It's HUGE! I can't imagine anyone ever using this, ever. I don't see a single advantage this has over the Kindle other than it's slightly not-as-ugly (that huge bezel isn't helping it, though). Really, I don't get it. It's like carrying a big clipboard around with you.

or a magazine. or a sheet of paper.

would you rather read on your ipod screen?

this size factor makes sense, and i disagree that foldable is a must-have feature. if it can be turned horizontally and display two pages side-by-side, it's great. the inch wide bezel lets one hold it without covering up any part of the content.

of course, i haven't actually touched or used it yet, so it could be a steaming pile.

sincerely,
diggum

You must have hella big thumbs, Diggum.

But I agree, if it can do two-up sideways, I just got a lot more interested.

I like the size. It's not like it's cumbersome to carry under your arm, and it's not too big to fit in a backpack or laptop bag. I have too many things in my pockets already to be tempted by something just small enough to be considered pocket sized.

That thing looks pretty cool. If it was 8.5"x11" without a bezel and was color it would be incredible.

I will admit that I probably wouldn't buy one unless it played music and videos...and maybe the internet... Basically, if I could get a tablet PC in the same size as that, I'd be into it.

@7 I love you. EXACTLY what I was thinking.

This thing is almost perfect the way it is. When it's in color and affordable, I'll be first in line to pick one up.

That is, if I can work out enough between now and then to shoulder the burden of carrying around something so gigantic!
