Brad Pitt Puts His Money Where His Mouth Is

posted by on September 18 at 6:50 AM

Brad Pitt—who famously said that he and Angelina wouldn’t marry until everyone could—donated $100,000 to the “No on Prop 8” campaign in California yesterday.

“Because no one has the right to deny another their life, even though they disagree with it, because everyone has the right to live the life they so desire if it doesn’t harm another and because discrimination has no place in America, my vote will be for equality and against Proposition 8,” the actor said in a statement.

Pitt’s donation marks the largest thus far to the anti-Prop. 8 campaign by an A-list celebrity.

Prop 8, if approved by California voters this November, would amend the state’s constitution to ban same-sex marriage in California, reversing a recent and historic California Supreme Court ruling that declared the state’s ban on gay marriage to be unconstitutional. The anti-gay marriage movement—particularly the Mormon Church—is pouring millions of dollars into California. But the more money they send, the worse they do in the polls

California voter opposition to a ban on same-sex marriages has grown over the past two months and is now a solid majority, according to a new Field Poll. The nonpartisan poll of voters likely to cast ballots in the Nov. 4 election shows 55 percent opposing Proposition 8, a constitutional amendment that would reinstate a ban on same-sex marriages, to 38 percent in favor. Only 7 percent were undecided.

That was a beautiful statement he released. I'm impressed.

It just seems ridiculous to me that a chruch would get involved in lobbying for this amendment. Yes, everyone knows you think homosexuality is a sin. So are, you know, greed, lust, gluttony, wrath, sloth, envy, and pride. Are you going to work to make those illegal as well? How is that helping anybody?

The Mormons also want to help Arizona pass an amendment:

Do married people have the right to tax me more than themselves? Every time someone gets married, we single folk pay more taxes.

@4. Please explain to me how your (you personally) marginal tax rate went up because I got married last year. Really.

Just gave them $50. Thanks for the link.

@4 Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. I have no idea how this LIE gets spread around.

not quite mr ballo, but close.

you are confused with the exchange between bells ringing and angels being awarded wings.

and those are close only if you are retarded.

@4. You're being especially dense today. Ever hear of the marriage penalty? You know, the situation where when people get married they pay more, not less, taxes. And it's completely irrelevant (on the federal level) right now anyway because of DOMA so same sex married couples would be taxed as singles any way.

@7

Lies make better bait than the truth when a-trolling for biters.

I want a constitutional amendment in favor of comment moderation on the Slog.

I work for a religious organization in Palm Springs and we've received DVDs, marketing packets, you name it from the Yes on Prop 8 people. Too bad our organization is totally supporting No on Prop 8 and our religious leaders are currently performing ALL marriages.

The Prop 8 stuff goes right into the trash, and it's all from out of state.

Yes yes yes - going to donate right now. Thanks for the link.

All the conservative churches opposed to marriage for gays have united on this one. Included Mormons, Catholics and Evangelicals. What a motley stew.

But they are very serious opponents. I did a bit of research and one of the Salt Lake papers has a story the 5 million has gone to Calif. from individuals Mormons in Utah.
They are not shy. Where are the rich gays and more Hollywood?

Thanks Dan, 50.00 a week for the next five weeks.... Victory in California!!!

If you are members of the National Big time Gay Orgs., insist they send more money to California. To win, we must spend millions on media in that state.

John Bailo is referring to the the Republican push to provide "incentives" for marriage. The thinking goes that if married couples are given tax breaks simply for being married, they are paying less than they would if they were still two single people. I have no idea if this is true or not, but we do know that breeders get tax breaks for having multiple kids.

The Bailo thinking is also assuming a "Zero Sum Game" of taxation. If someone is paying less in taxes, that means someone else has to pay more to make up the difference. Unfortunately, in the Bush tax scheme, it's more of a "Negative Sum Game", where tax revenues are just decreased all over, as high income folks pay less in taxes and the rest see their income decrease and therefore their tax contributions decline too.

@14 who wrote it for him? Probably the studio behind his recent roll in Burn After Reading in which he plays a gay man.

@13: "The thinking goes that if married couples are given tax breaks simply for being married, they are paying less than they would if they were still two single people. I have no idea if this is true or not, but we do know that breeders get tax breaks for having multiple kids."

Well, anyone gets tax breaks for having multiple kids, adopted or biological. And Brad Pitt gets that whether he marries Angelina or not. Although, any given kid can only be claimed on one tax form, I think so I'm guessing that parents who aren't federally-married put the kids on the parent's taxes that gets them the most benefit.

Oh, I'm so dissapointed (even though I know I shouldn't be). These two very cute Mormon boys have been coming by lately. They're very sweet & virginal seeming. They even mowed my lawn!

Oh well, at least I get the pleasure of yelling at them now. "Get the fuck off my lawn!"

Mormons...ugh. What idiotic turds they are. I never thought I'd say this but Brad is more than just a pretty face. He's also a decent and genorous person.

I am shocked--shocked!--to learn that John Bailo @4 is single!

(And that he seems to resent those whose relationships have cleared the dauntingly high bars of happiness and stability requisite to marriage.)

Not all Utahns are against gay marriage.

According to the Salt Lake Tribune this morning, Bruce Bastian - the gay ex-Mormon co-founder of WordPerfect - donated one million dollars to help fight Prop 8.

This outspends all other Utah donors combined. So take that, Mormon church.

I wish there was more of an against-all-marriage movement.

The part of my wedding day where I signed a legal document was the worst part of that day. I was in a church, why was the government there in paper form? Marriage is a religious institution and therefore should be removed from every law, and only performed and recognized by individual churches. Remember that whole separation of church and state deal?

Civil unions for all! Where straight/gay/bi unions should be able to exist between two, three, or however many men or women. They can be sexual or not. It shouldn't be up to the government to decide.

OK, done ranting. I should give some money now.

@13 - wrong, he's not that smart.

Time for an anti-mormon amendment. Comandeer their churches, and turn them into gay marriage drive-thrus. Or mormon human-meat-grinders. with all that purity, they're bound to be tasty!

This reminds me of the time my mom and I were discussing marriage. Finally I said, "what are the benefits of getting married?" And all she could come up with was tax breaks.
