I like Bitch, too, but here's the thing: they need $40K just to make their next print run. How do they plan on addressing their financial needs for the run after that? Will they just keep asking their subscribers for more money?

Because, see, I used to subscribe to Bitch. I ordered a subscription after they sent out a plea for money so they could make their next print run, just like this. And then I never got a single issue, no matter how many times I contacted them to say what the hell, ladies, you took my money and sent me nothing in return. They sure managed to cash my check, though.

Well, yes Paul I'm very fond of Bitch too. (And Smart Bitches, Trashy Books for that matter.) But, I agree with what Tracie wrote over on Jezebel, after they raise the money this time what is their long term plan and how exactly does getting into the book publishing business help them.

And, unpopular though the sentiment is, some of the writing in Bitch does, frankly, read like thesis papers from first year women's studies majors.

I would hate to see Bitch fail, I love their spin on popular culture and I've taken many of the recommendations over the years for things to read, listen to, and buy. But, they need to quickly evolve their business model because their ship has been sinking for a while and it doesn't seem like anyone was even trying to bail out the water...

Yes, it's likely that it's over. But that doesn't mean your contribution won't aid them in other ways. I'd rather let them know their work did mean something then to just let it sit and have them second guessing if they should move on to pursue the same line of work.

I just sent them some cash, too. True, my $25 probably isn't going to turn around an ailing publication, and yes, there are some articles that read like clunky women's studies essays, but it's always an interesting read, and I respect the work and dedication required to produce it.

Plus, if Bitch goes under, it will no longer be clear to newstand cashiers that I am purchasing Us Weekly and People not because I am shallow, but rather because I am engaged in an intellectural critique of pop culture.
