Was Bill wearing a McCain/Palin button too? What a fucking piece of shit Clinton has turned into this past year.
Bill Clinton and Joe Lieberman should be fucked with a double headed dildo. HARD... Just the way they are fucking the Democratic party.
I thought that what McCain had been pushing for were more of the town-hall meetings, not formal debates like the one scheduled for tomorrow.
C'mon, you expect a guy whose nickname is Bubba to support Obama?
@1 no, it was a "clinton 2012" button. isn't it obvious?
dear bill, i still love you. STFU.
I'm beginning to think that the best part about an Obama victory will be telling Clinton to shove it.
I love Bil Clinton but feel he is being VERY passive aggressive about Hillary's loss and needs to truly support Obama if we are gonna win.
Great blog btw, truly excellent!
Dave, WGB
Clinton is a douchebag.
Brilliant. Who needs enemies with friends like these?
i hope that somewhere in their pea brains, republicans realize that democratic primary voters did them a huge fucking favor by voting out the clintons.
I seem to recall that same issue...
McCain: We should do weekly town hall debates until the election.
Obama: How about just one on the 4th of July?
Hmmm...
Fuck you Bill
You know, I was buying the whole "Hillary has done more to support Obama then most defeated primary competitors are expected to" thing until he pulled this. I think he just can't deal with not being the center of attention. What a passive-aggressive temper tantrum!
Well, McLaim was also speaking at his confab this morning so he probably needed to butter him up a bit. So much for the drama of rushing back to DC right away.
Clinton was on the Daily Show last night at 8 pm. He said the financial crisis package should include a moratorium on foreclosures and a plan to allow the public to get an equity stake (as noted here, natch) as done with AIG. The host started praising him saying he would win by twenty points if he could run for president again. The audience sheererd wildly. Billdawg deftly deflected that line of thought to praise Obama and say he, Obama is going to win. The discussion turned to how the culture war type campaigning reminiscent of 1968 was such a lousy fact. Billdawg said what he and Hillary tried to do in the their speeches lauding Obama at the convention was focus on why Obama will help the people who are undecided so far -- he doens't need the votes of the folks who already love him -- he needs to show he loves the people who aren't yet for him.
Readers of this Slog should realloy think about that a bit.
He said (as noted here) the pitch has to be about economics.
HE pointed out that Hillary has done more for Obama than all prior "runners up" for the Dem nomination have done in the last 40 years combined. And the focus needs to be on how do we get the wwones who don't love us (the Democrats) already-- we gotta love them, not expect them to love us.
That statement about the last 40 years combined is likely a fib of course but I don't recall Tsongas doing much of anything for Clinton when he ran. And when you see Clinton NOT campaigning, it's likely because Obama hasn't asked him to.
And saying it's okay to put the debate back is a horrible crime and sin to be denounced for deviltry only if you are a completely cultish Obama worshipper who has lost all reason.
From time to time McCain could have an idea that's okay. You know, when it's a total economic crisis and one can easily shift a debate a couple of days.....Obama wasn't even planning to go to DC to vote on the ecoonomic plan.
Taking a comment like what Clinton said about McCain and reacting by denouncing Clinton is so doggish. It's utterly Pavlovian. it shows a slavish devotion and complete lack of independent judgment.
And guess what. Say Clinton's wrong on this. Take a deep breath...be calm....you sometimes people can be wrong in what they say. Sometimes I'm wrong, sometimes you're wrong, sometimes Obama's wrong.....to leap from that to "Fuck you Bill" is a arge part of the reason that the "former Clinton supporter level of support for Obama" remains at 58 percent like last June and so if Obama manages to lose by a few points you can all thank yourselves for being assholes to the Clintons.
The OBama folks preach unity then act and talk like they don't give a shit about winning or getting to 50%+1. It's incredibly stupid. It is a worse level of cuiltism than I experienced inside th Catholic Church for the first 16 years of my life. Cut it out. Grow up. Focus on winning. You, we, we need all those votes represnted by the Clintons. Obama is only barely ahead with an economic crisis going on and that means he sucks as a candidate--he should be far ahead by now. Getting suckered by this McCain deal on the debate was dumb. Of course McCain and the pres can make Obama stay in DC till 8 pm Friday night. And someone saying that elected Senators should go to Dc and do their jobs isn't so unreasoanble. I repeat: Obama wasn't even on planning to go to DC to vote. WTF up with that?
I think Obama will win but the conduct of his adherents bodes very poorly for future unity when he will need all of US to act TOGETHER as one great big WE to pass health care, finance regs, greening the economy, etc. You do know you need 60 votes in the Senate to do anything, right? Can you get to 60 if there is a constant refrain of "Fuck you Clintons" considering she got about half the votes and has tons of supporters all across the USA?
Oh btw did you notice that Obama is in fact going to DC today? So all the writing yesterday about how brilliant he was to "stand up" to this McCain ploy was so much utter bullshit again. He collapsed in hours and went to DC.
Unity y'all-
"Oh btw did you notice that Obama is in fact going to DC today? So all the writing yesterday about how brilliant he was to "stand up" to this McCain ploy was so much utter bullshit again. He collapsed in hours and went to DC."
Obama never said anything about not going to DC. He points were more along the lines of we don't need to suspend the campaign and the debates can still go forward.
PC, Obama said he can do both. How is that collapse?
@16
Obama is going to DC because he was asked to by the president, EXACTLY as he said he would if asked to and if needed. Not going back to DC uninvited (since neither Obama or McCain are on any commision related to the economy) to muddy the issue at hand was the right move.
Yes, and actually his going to Washington and working on this proposal is one of the ways he's turning this into a coup for himself. Obama is showing he can lead prepare at the same time, and seeing him sitting with McCain in the senate while McCain is saying it's impossible to campaign while doing this makes McCain look ridiculous. Check your intrade quotes guys. Obama's stock has surged ahead by more points than I've seen this whole campaign.
Clinton's being an ass. Fuck him.
The good news is it's impossible to have any less respect for either of the Clintons now. The bad news is they both won't stop trying to get you to respect them less, regardless.
Oy. I almost agree with PC. First time for everything.
I watched Bill on Larry King & the Daily Show... he was very positive towards Obama, Jon Stewart even asked his audience if Bill had done enough, and they cheered.
I see nothing to dispute that with this quote... he's giving McC the benefit of the doubt. McC could have a million different reasons for this decision. Most of them are lame or underhanded, to be sure, but Bill took the high road and didn't try to guess. Which is exactly the road our former president should be on.
However PC, I didn't hear Obama ever say he wouldn't go to DC... he said he'd go if he was asked, and if the leadership thought it would help. Apparently, they did, and he did as he promised. I believe he is still standing up to this McCain ploy by insisting that the debate should still happen. Maybe practice some of that unity that you preach?
PC, it's adorable the way you rush to defend the clintons with an angst-ridden tirade whenever someone speaks ill towards them, and then call obama supporters "cultish" and "pavlovian" without the slightest hint of irony. "slavish devotion and complete lack of independent judgement" was a nice touch, too.
Friends like these, huh, Gary?
Fuck the Clintons, fuck PC, fuck all baby boomers in general.
PC, I agree that it is OK for Bill Clinton to be a little less partisan than other Dems, However, the notion that McCain's narcissistic stunt is working out well for him, and that it proceeds from Country-First motives on his part, is bonkers. Read this excellent little piece:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/24/mccains-financial-crisis_n_129118.html
God damn it, Hillary. Chloroform the motherfucker and throw him in a closet until Nov. 5. Do it for your country.
The Democrats are turning this into a partisan issue? Nice try @26. McCain is trying to turn the crisis into a photo op. All this is about is trying to get out of the debate or move the VP debate to tomorrow. He spent the evening doing interviews New York and did not go back to DC to 'save the country' as he told David Letterman. He's voted on one Senate bill since March, and he was one of the Keating five. He's suspending democracy for an econmomic crisis that he was instrumental in creating? Yeah @26, the Democrats are turning this into a partisan issue. Idiot.
To quote Chris Rock from Letterman, "Bill, Hillary laaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwssst!"
Now get with the goddamned program, William Jefferson C, because if you don't and Obama does lose, there's gonna be a lot of 'splainin to do before you try to run Hillary again in 2012...
I agree. Bill has got to realise that the stakes have just been made incredibly higher and should be more critical of the Republicans. Or maybe his heart just isn't in it anymore. In which case he should shut up.
I'm an Obama supporter, but have we become so much like the Republicans that as soon as a leader of our party says even-handed about McCain we call him a "piece of shit", "douchebag", etc.?
You sound worse than the idiots on Little Green Footballs and HotAir.
