Another Reason to Panic

Hey Dan, here’s another stat to incite panic attacks in worried liberals: According to the latest Rasmussen poll, Republican Dino Rossi is leading Gov. Christine Gregoire by six points, 52 to 46 percent, and John McCain is just two points behind Barack Obama in Washington state, with 47 percent to Obama’s 49 percent.

Well, now my vote will have more than symbolic importance.

My neighborhood (north Green Lake... I know it's out of the Stranger's radar) is littered with "Dino Rossi" and "Dinocrat" signs. Go give Gregoire some $$:

Can we see a Rossi/Gregoire poll? And can you please debunk the claims that Rossi's ads are making that Gregoire created a multi-billion dollar deficit? What's up with that? I want to believe it's typical Republican lies, but that's a pretty huge deficit. I want an explanation, and I trust you guys to give us an honest one.

Yeah, sure when I say it nobody listens. I'm developing a complex and am going to go back to commenting only on the fluff. Well, after one last hurrah on Annie's post.

Gallup has McCain's lead down to three points. As in not statistically significant.

I'm surprised PC hasn't lectured us yet this morning about what that means.

Where are Gregoire's ads? You've got Dino promising to 'reach out across party lines' and save the 'most vulnerable', which we know is complete bullshit, not to mention those negative indian casino kickback ads, also bullshit.

I have confidence Obama will win WA handily, but I'm worried about the governors race, which frankly affects us more directly.

Telephone polls (this one was of 500 likely voters) are becoming more skewed to a conservative position because they don't include people who no longer have landlines and respondents are more likely to be either older, more conservative people or residents of small towns or rural areas.

I vowed to never vote for Gregoire because she supported rebuilding the viaduct. Simple. Never thought it would matter anyway, maybe now it will. Tough luck. She has permanently lost my vote and I'd encourage everyone to send the same message.

@ 1, 6 - yeah, everytime I watch TV, I got Dino's smiling face telling me how Gregoire is an incompetent fuck-up, and now, a casino lackey, but I haven't seen anything from her. Anyone know what's up? Or was the Block Party supposed to be her trump card?

Gregoire will win again and it won't be as close as last time.

It's going to help Obama in WA that he would award that tanker contract to Boeing versus McCain's anti-Boeing hostility.

PRAISE JESUS!!!! I am accepting JESUS as my personal saviour!!! I am renouncing my atheism!!!

We are SOOOOOOOO fucked if Rossi and McCain win. But then Gregiore dug this grave all on her own. Sorry, but it is true.

I could never vote for Dino Rossi for the sole reason that he looks like Potsie from Happy Days.

This was a poll of just 500 people.

Yes. And don' be so sure that those polled were from rural areas or small towns. The Rossi signs here in North Seattle are every where.

@7,

Or maybe conservatives are dumb enough to answer a call from an unknown number this time of year.

@14 I specifically included owners of landlines and older people. You are aware that they can live anywhere, including Seattle? I am.

All the more reason to pump up the ground game in this state and run up Seattle numbers. Time to "steal" another election!

I have to agree with Fnarf (in another thread) that this blog needs more graphs.

@7, Actually, that's not true. Polling firms are well aware of the fact that younger people are less likely to have land lines. They know exactly the percentage of the population, by age group, that are cell phone only. They weight their polls to adjust for that.

Don't let yourself be fooled into thinking polls are off because of cellphones. Polling companies know about it and adjust their numbers to reflect that.

I've been worried about Gregoire for quite some time: Her ads as anemic, you don't see many signs for her, and she doesn't seem to be campaigning all that much.

There's a lot of stupid people out there, and a lot of angry middle-aged white guys who will vote for Dino just becaus they think he "got screwed by King County" Really. Add to that the women who hate successful women (unless they're like Sarah Palin, who is probably one of those women herself), and that's a big voting bloc.

I'm thinking what @8 is thinking. Dino is a dick, but what positive change has Gregoire brought about anyway? You can't be mayor*cough*Greg or governor for life just because you represent the Democratic party.

Polls are polls. McCain has about the same chance of winning Washington as Obama does of winning Idaho. And once the voters see Rossi's ultra conservative views come out, I'm confident Gregoire will win again.

If voters here are dumb enough to elect George W Rossi, I'm moving to New York.

@19: How exactly do the pollsters accurately gauge these "adjustments," since they aren't allowed to poll the people they're supposed to be adjusting for?
