A Special Relationship

Okay, here’s one reason to live even if John McCain winds up winning the election. Little Britain USA is coming to HBO…

Via Towleroad—where you can read about the (inevitable) gay-rights group upset about a skit that features two openly-gay performers. Of course, it’s not a gay-rights group that any has ever heard of before (West Hollywood Gay and Lesbian Alliance), and doesn’t have a website that I could find with a quick Google search. So there’s a chance it’s a publicity stunt. And WHGLA’s chief complaint—”This is the most politically incorrect, offensive and obnoxious material ever seen in this country.”—sounds like it was written by someone working to promote the show.

Dan,

You really think that McCain, well Palin will allow anything like this to be shown in the US? Frankly, I expect to see copies of QAF destroyed upon Palin's assent to the Dictatorship of America.

Sorry, still moving to Canada or killing myself if the GOP wins in November. It will be easier than the death McCain/Palin has planned for the rest of you people.

Video not available, who's in the skit? Matt Lucas is gay but David Walliams is not.

Little Britain *is* funny but I feel it necessary to warn you - most people aren't laughing at the same things you are laughing at. Be ready for the stream of absolute fucking dickhead morons who enjoy it because they like laughing at people who are gay (or have disabilities, or are underclass) and completely miss the point of the jokes. Happened in England, will happen in America too.

Give it a few weeks and this will be a redneck favourite.

Like most British comedies, "Little Britain USA" will sail completely over the heads of middle America.

@2 - Rosie O'Donnell is the other queer. It's the fat fighters sketch, so you can imagine where it'll go.

Whenever I feel upset, I go re-watch Daffyd interviewing Elton John. Always cheers me up.

Meh. The first two seasons of Little Britain were on BBC America back in 2003-2004, and those seasons & the subsequent one have been released on DVD with regularity for those who find amusement in this "entertainment". Exposure to a continuous stream of Little Britain on DVD for 4 hours easily reveals the show's shortcomings: Matt Lucas is brilliant, but too often dragged down (heh) by the dulling weight of David Walliams, whose one-trick characters seem tiresome and one-dimensional. Enjoy, all.

Complaining about Little Britain being offensive is kind of like complaining that South Park is tasteless. That's hilarious.

Little Britain is growing on me, but I can't imagine watching four hours straight... small doses, that's the trick.

This show is going to be an absolute disaster over here. Americans are so easily offended and try to find and excuse to take offense. Especially in Seattle, where everybody thinks they are a date raped black vegan lesbian eskimo. The humor simply doesn't translate.

I wonder how the Tingtong Mackadangdang character will go over in the US?

Americans can only take bland tepid Friends style humor.

Sheesh, you show one British clip and the next thing you know cranky trolls are hating on America.

I love my American friends who say "Yeah, it's funny, but people in this country are too dumb to get it." Hey, dummy! YOU'RE an American, too! So... you're the smartest American in the world? How come you're a middle manager who sits under bad florescent lights all day?

@9: yeah. The thing is, America is a big place- find enough of a niche of people who do think it's funny, and that's fine. All Americans don't have to like it. Even our minorities of people who do like such things can be quite large comparatively, and in certain cases that's enough to survive on.

@6: also, Matt Lucas is an Arsenal fan, which adds to his awesomeness.

Oh, Little Britain is funny for about 2 episodes.

Then they make the mistake of imitating American sitcoms, and pad the series out with 600 more episodes where they do the same thing over and over.

@12: not only is he an Arsenal fan, but Arsenal have him on their official Internet video channel all the time. And he goes to 'Arsenal in the community' events with the players. And whoever films Premiership games always flashes to him in the crowd during home games. This only endears him to me further.

Looks like the original story about the "West Hollywood Gay and Lesbian Alliance" being upset about the show is itself a work of fiction...possibly of British origin...
