A Request for Liberals

posted by on September 9 at 13:31 PM

story.jpg

Please stop calling Sarah Palin things like “dominatrix,” “whip-wielding mistress who wants to seduce America,” “pinup queen,” “feisty,” “doable,” “babalicious,” someone people want to “drill,” and the “girl next door.”

Because frankly, that shit just makes her more sympathetic to women who were infuriated when the right used similar terms to denigrate and dismiss Hillary Clinton. And it forces people like me to defend her when we’d rather be calling her out (or, as Salon writer Gary Kamiya would have it, “reaming her”) for her hateful, out-of-the-mainstream, anti-woman track record and beliefs.

Did anybody refer to Hillary as "doable” or “babalicious" at any point in the last decade?

What does that say about women? Talk to me, hun.

Calling that nutjob a dominatrix is a serious insult to dominatrixes. Maybe I should file a suit.

Please provide one example of someone calling HRC babalicious or doable or someone saying they wanted to have sex with (drill) her.

Actually, no, no one "forced" you to defend her from the caricatures of Salon.com instead of attack her horrible leadership and premodern ideology. You chose to, because one bothered you more than the other. Just note that, please.

And it causes non-issue based male voting blocs to get stiffies, and that turns into ballot box votes.

Yes, conservative democrats exist. Yes, people who don't care about issues vote.

Oh man, for real.

The more we attack her, the more martyr points she racks up. And everyone knows evangelical America loves nothing so much as a good martyr. Every time I think about this, my ulcer oozes a little bit.

Why don't we focus our energies AT LEAST on the parts of her private life that interfere with her ability to do her job and demonstrate some hypocrisy (ie troopergate). Better yet, why don't we focus on the incompetent, hypocritical dude who's actually running for president?

Obama is totally doable and the boy next door...yum. So is Biden's son and Palin's husband and oldest son. Biden would be, if it weren't for those gigantic teeth...

They're all fuckalicious.

While I very much agree we should not do ANYthing help Palin's case by acting like misogynistic fools toward her... Erica, would you please suggest some appropriate ways to make fun of this insanely dangerous politician who happens to be female?

Is it only okay to make snarky personal quips against a public official when that official is male? Or is this one of those "can't we all just be NICER" pleas?

Mistress Mattise:

You could sue, accept only if she goes on and on pointlessly about her "Polyamory" and how she is so much more evolved than the rest of the world. You could sue if her fashion sense was as bad as yours and if her life was as vapid and pointless as your tastes in dresses.

Sweetie, you are no more a dominatrix or edgy than a chicken is a dog. You are a whining posturing wannabe "kinkster" who's only point in life is disappointing your parents and irritating the majority of kinksters with your childish rambling.

You are boring. At least you and Palin have THAT in common. But hey, you are polyamorous, right? Go cry on one of your cock loving men's shoulders.

Posted by ecce homo | September 9, 2008 1:52 PM

I totally agree with you for the reasons you listed, and for the reason that she is completely unappealing to me in every way imaginable.

Posted by Dougsf | September 9, 2008 1:52 PM
20

Thank you Erica for posting this. It is sad that folks choose to perpetuate mysogyny rather than call out Palin for the bullshit candidate that supports policies that will throw women (and others) back a few decades.

I also agree with Mistress Matisse that it is a true insult to dominatrixes--many of whom do great work and are true feminists.

If you want to call her out, then call her out. Have you watched cable news lately? There are already plenty of people defending Sarah Palin. Nobody and nothing are "forcing" you to do anything.

ECB, I agree with your argument generally (that we shouldn't refer to Palin in those terms), but as usual, you misinterpreted the point of the article. Kamiya was not calling her those things. He was saying that the right has made this election about her image, and even though you find that imagery offensive, much of the country is attracted to it. But hey, he used the word "feisty", so he must hate women.

Right on ECB! Sarah Palin is proof making the world hostile to women is truly an equal opportunity endeavor. Sexist insults just help her in this quest. I will however remark that anyone who works so hard to make the world so miserable for people like themself must lack some basic bit of humanity.

For all the people asking why Erica feels like she should defend Palin against the sexualization that going on... Um, how about because to not do so would make Erica completely inconsistent as a feminist?

Erica was vocal about defending Hillary when she perceived that people were judging her gender as opposed to her stances on the issues, her record, her ability to get the job done, etc (or, to put it another way, when they treated her differently because of her gender).

So, if people are juding Palin based on her gender/do-ability, it would be awfully hypocritical of Erica not to defend her, even if she does have a despicable belief system and ridiculous stances on the issues. She should be judged on those beliefs and stances, as opposed to anything to do with her gender.

@36:

The part where I get confused is the part where you say that Palin must be "defended" against being called doable.

I'm not talking about cases where someone says she should or shouldn't be elected because she is or isn't hot/female. I'm talking about where someone says, "Yeah, she may be a horrible person, but at least she's hot."

What's wrong with that? Many of us have commented on how Obama's hot--why didn't I hear any reaction to that? Why, when it's a woman being discussed, is that suddenly "sexist"?

@40 - I was specifically thinking about this quote from the Salon article linked in my do-ability comment:

the presidential race may be decided by the perceived doability of the governor of Alaska.

I don't care if people judge the hotness of a male of female politician. Just don't judge their hotness instead of their stances on the issues.

Man, are some people ever Unclear on the Concept. If we're going to attack candidates based on our own childish perception of their degree of fuckability, then apply those perceptions equally to male and female candidates. If you're not going to assess the relative fuckability of McCain and Biden and Obama, then leave Palin's out of it. Gods know there are PLENTY of insane policy issues to assail her on. The woman's a lunatic. I could give a shit what she looks like; she's barking mad, corrupt as hell, and arrogant as a Bush.

Posted by monkey | September 9, 2008 3:40 PM
51

@48 - For the record, ECB did not make a great point. She repeated the point that Shakesville made which, ironically, was the same point that Kamiya made. It's just that Shakes and ECB missed Kamiya's point, so they attacked him for it. The point is that the Republicans are specifically making this race about personal qualities, so they are the ones playing up her alleged hotness. It's not the liberals doing it.

Posted by sleestak | September 9, 2008 3:40 PM
52

@48: Okay, but you realize the Stranger posted a feature article a couple weeks ago about Obama's cock. So you have to concede that sexualizing candidates isn't new and isn't restricted to females. And also, the internet is a juvenile, prurient place where in spite of everybody's best intentions, stupid remarks will continue to be made as long as these comment boxes contain a "post" button.

Rather than figuring out strategies for saying "I told you so" after accepting "inevitable" defeat, maybe some strategies for avoiding defeat while it's still possible would be helpful. I'd also like to point out that women like yourself are in a far better position to criticize Palin than men are, since it's much harder to accuse women of doing so for sexist reasons. So what are you waiting for? If there was ever a time to vent some righteous feminist anger, it is right now and the target of choice should be Palin and her neanderthal buddies in the GOP. Maybe some of those women voters who think Palin is "one of them" need to hear another woman talking some damn sense about it.

We are down to the wire here and liberals need to step away from their favorite game of attacking each other and go after the dangerous idiots who are trying to secure another four years of their disastrous rule.

"The crowd apparently took the "lipstick" line as a reference to Palin, who described the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull in a single word: 'lipstick.'"

Not a stretch: Pit bull... Hockey mom... lipstick... pig in lipstick... Hockey mom... Palin.

Again, according to the reporter, the crowd of Obama supporters seemed to make the connection...

Look for the words "apparently", "took", "the", "lipstick" (that ones tough because its in quotes; they look like this:""), "line", "as", "a", "reference", "to", and "Palin". From those words, if you concentrate really really hard, you MIGHT comprehend that the reporter understood the crowd believed he was talking about her.

I've decided the best way to deal with this issue is not to discuss Sarah Palin AT ALL. The GOP trick aimed at stupid America is working and we need to stop falling prey to it. She is a nothing and a nobody and has nothing to do with the real issues that should be being addressed by the campaigns. As Huffpo put it she's a "Trojan Moose"....

Hmm, I wish YGBKM would take Representative Westmoreland's use of the figure of speech "uppity" to describe Barack Obama - a phrase which is almost invariably followed by the "N" word in common parlance - as seriously as he does trying to distort and/or impart new meanings to two even more common sayings (you can't put lipstick on a pig, you can wrap an old fish in new paper and it still smells rotten, or variations thereof).

McCain offers more of the same failed Bush policies, and he chose a right-wing wacko for a running mate. Period.

YGBKM would make little Joe proud (and I meant McCarthy, though I suppose Goebbels would apply as well)

Oh wait, you can't be intellectually honest and still be a Republican these days. How could I forget?

Sorry, ECB, until women are required to no longer mention Obama's looks, we get to mention hers. Pretending that noticing and commenting on the appearance of candidates isn't a two-way street involves either lying, wearing enormous blinders, or being shamefully stupid. Having a vagina doesn't shield you from observations about your appearance, which I'm stunned to have to explain to you.

Which is all the more reason to get out there to defeat the McCain/Palin campaign - a campaign that seems fueled at the moment by women - and make all of us stupid, apathetic, sexist jerks eat our words.

The train for the red states leaves daily at 4:45 from King Street. Pack some hairspray and deodorant, and head out there.

EmmiiG, calm yourself, dear. There's no need for profanity. The point remains that the sexist guys won't be the ones to suffer the most from a McCain/Palin presidency. It will be women.

And whether or not it fits into your view of the sisterhood or not, women are apparently behind the surge that McCain/Palin is experiencing.

@72

lol @ "no need for profanity". I will try to be a bit kinder and gentler for your sensitive soul there, Catalina, didn't realize people still cared about that. D~mn, haha.

Poor women will suffer the most btw, rich women rarely if ever suffer the same way. Sh~t, if we want to split hairs lets go with poor lesbians in the inner city who don't speak English. They can get on a train with some deodorant, ride to Washington, and try to fight the inevitable. I don't disagree. All I did was point out who will ~deserve~ it more. (aka not the poor b~tches riding the train to Washington.)

Women aren't "behind" the surge that McCain/Palin is experiencing. Obama is still ahead amongst women, and McCain is still ahead amongst men. White women and men are part of the post-convention bump, with white men being the majority of supporters/financers/people planning to vote for the guy/people talking him up in the media, as they always have been. So saying "women" are behind McCain's success, when they are the minority of McCain voters and the majority of Obama voters just seems a little like bullsh~t to me. Sorry.
