Slog - Comments on Why Not Here?

The United Kingdom arm of giant publisher Penguin has opened up a dating website. I don't know why American publishers haven't picked up on this one yet, but it strikes me as a great idea. What better way to define a potential mate than by the books he or she reads? When I worked at a bookstore, I would sometimes have my breath taken away by a beautiful woman, and then instantly be repulsed by her as she bought a few books from the Left Behind series from me....

Don't I recall you dismissing Goodreads (an independentish version of this very thing*) in these pages at some point? Or did I imagine that?

*OK, it's not actually a dating site, but people could certainly use it as such, I would think.

@13 Napoleon anyone who dates you has excellent taste.

I've been first dating a few times recently and I have to admit that if the guy says he doesn't read it goes into the negative column for me. He can have different tastes in books than me, but he has to like to read.

Comment by Jessica

@14: And while he says he's reading On The Road, what he means is "this is my go-to title to sound hip and bohemian in the hopes that hip and bohemian ladies of loose morals will have hip and bohemian sex with me on the weekends before I go back to my 60-hour-a-week job programming phone systems for the government, which is interspersed with nights spent as a night-elf druid woman on WoW." Secretly, he's obsessed with the Tom Clancy Rainbow Six series, especially the later ones that Clancy didn't actually write.

I think I've only been hit on in a bookstore once- I'm there quite frequently, but I'm not what you would call a "looker". I didn't even realize until after it had happened, and it was by a rather cute lady- maybe she's into fat chicks- I'll never really know.
