Netflix has some of the stupidest developers I've ever met. They don't think five minutes past the last task they were given. Their entire codebase is new junk kludged on top of old junk that was only supposed to do one thing once.

Paul, I wish you weren't on the other coast from me, and I wish you weren't straight, b/c I am kind of in love with you.

Someone should check to see if NBC is involved. Maybe it's all a ploy to drive up viewership of their Olympics broadcasts.

Thank you so much for posting this...I hadn't heard about this, but was thinking just this morning, that I'd have movies this weekend...now I'm kicking myself for dropping two movies in the mail yesterday, that we hadn't even watched. *sighs*

In the meantime, how about supporting your local, non-chain DVD rental shop? Otherwise, you can also do iTunes movie purchases or rentals. Amazon.com does a rental thing, too, but the software is big-brotherish and hard to uninstall, so I don't recommend it (Unbox).

And of course, there's Hulu (www.hulu.com), which has oodles of classic and current TV shows and movies with minimal ad interruptions. I've been catching up on The Love Boat and Lost in Space, myself.

Of course, all of these options generally mean watching on a computer screen, but on newer screens I find it quite pleasant to do so.

@2 an outage like this would not be related to their Dev team but to their ops team. If this was an issue with a version update their operations team should have rolled back to a previous release that was known good.
As far as a multi day mail outage their Mail Admin should be fired.

Their computer seemed to work just fine when it took twenty bucks out of my checking account three days ago.

Simac @6: Good point; I should have noted that. In case anyone's wondering, I do have an account at my local independent movie store, and I do use it a lot. It's important to support them, too.

A multi-DAY email outage? Company-wide? Jesus, I start to freak if we go down for a couple of MINUTES. And Netflix is HUGE; they should have entire backup systems online and ready to go.

The library still works just fine, too. I pretty much always have a huge stack from there that I'll never get through, but it's nice to have stuff to choose from.

Yah, and Blockbuster's online service, which is identical to Netflix, does me jus' fine.

it sucks that netflix has been down for so long and i can't find a proper EMAIL for them. What a load of crap!

Oh and for all you blockbuster online fans, it is NOT the same. It used to be rad to get 3 out at a time, then exchange them at the store for 3 rentals, but now that they are bottle capping that service and not allowing higher tiers of service, they suck.

To say that they are identical, is stupid.

As for the library, they don't have obscure horror.

As for the non-chain, dealing with stupid video store clerks really doesn't help me at all. I'm a former video store clerk and man, the idiots working at local shops near my house are complete idiots.

Netflix sucks too now.

Everything sucks...!!!

1. Wait for Netflix stock to tank due to this fuck up

2. Buy Netflix stock

3. Wait until their digital streaming service starts

4. Sell and profit

What's the problem here? They had a major computer issue and notified their clients the same day via both e-mail and their Netflix Community Blog that there would be a shipping delay (and have kept on updating; I've at this point had three e-mails keeping me up to date). And whatever the problem is, I did get some discs in the mail today so they're at least shipping some. Seems to me like Netflix is on top of this, communicating with their customers about the issue and already noting credits for affected customers.

So again, what's the issue?

@15 the problem is that a online entity like netflix should have the redundancy to not have major outages like this. Seriously, no shipments tuesday, a few wednesday and so far none today. That is a major outage for it's customers which no decent web company should ever have.

Unbelievably bad timing. The Wire's last season just came out and I was in prime position to get it ASAP. Fortuna, why do you curse me so?!

"Where My Moobies At?"

Paul, if you're like me your moobies are under your shirt, and you refuse to quit calling them "pecs" despite the eons since the last push-up.

This reminds me, I need to cancel my worthless Netflix membership now that I've been spending like $15/week at Hollywood Video. I've fucking had "Heat" for over 2 months trying to find the time to carve out THREE goddamn hours to watch it.

#17, it's ok, the last season of The Wire totally blew.

Netflix suck - and you in live in Seattle. Suck it up and go to Rain City or Scarecrow instead of supporting yet another anonymous megacorp.

@14, this works now. The selection is still rather limited, though.
