Video Game Nerd Powers Activate!

posted by on August 28 at 14:08 PM

My nerd brethren, while we didn’t write anything about the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) in this week’s paper, that doesn’t mean we completely forgot about it.

Now in its fifth year, PAX—which was spawned by a videogame blog and webcomic—has grown into the biggest goddamn video game convention on the planet, and tons of gaming companies will be at the show with shiny new toys for you to play with.Rumor has it Gears of War 2 will be playable at PAX!

There’ll be plenty of games to play, but there are also a number of seminars and workshops like:

So, You Want to Pitch A Game

Writing For Video Games

and

Losing Your Virginity: A How-to For Beginners

Slog gaming wunderkind Sam Machkovech will be in attendance, posting updates whenever he can tear his sweaty palms away from Barbie’s Horse Adventure 2 or whatever.

You can also check out Sam’s interview with Penny Arcade’s creators here.

Im looking forward to the spore preview and fallout 3. Don't forget about The Wizard starring Fred Savage either.

Gears of War 2 is incredible, but it isn't very far from Gears of War. I really, really, really hope they touched up the cog/locust shield. It's practically impossible to get a clean shot out of them while they're firing. You either have to waste your teammate to take 'em out or flee like a little bitch. Stopping for a steady headshot isn't going to work unless you're me.

Gee, they only do that EVERY FLIPPIN' YEAR. Screw the moviez. Go violate women and get on Jezebel.

I can't help the fact that I love "The Wizard" and this is my first time attending PAX. I love the glove.

Well, it will look like complete shit and every time someone opens a door you won't be able to see it. And people will constantly walk in and talk at the door, "what mooovie is this?" "Oh, it's just a movie." "Fags!"

Good times.

Feel free to skip Cafe Metropolitan, if you care about your image and all.

Went the last couple years, but now it's so inconveniently the same weekend as Bumbershoot. Ugh, who planned that? I'll probably pop in on Friday or Sunday if I can.

Optimus Rhyme (who played at pretty much every PAX) is playing at the High Dive tonight, their last show EVER, with MC Frontalot (also PAX veteran) and other nerdcore peoples. Check it out?

That settles it, Im shitting in the sink at Chapel at some point in the future.

PAX is going to be amazing. I am STOKED.

I am also excited to harass Sam. While drunk, and playing MTG.

The first time I ran into MC Frontalot was at PAX 06. I said, "where's the Penny Arcade shit?" to his face, not knowing who he was, and he laughed. Then my friend asked who actually started the term 'nerdcore,' he scoffed at the notion that it was anybody but him. I said, "whatever. MC Chris did" and started to walk off. He said something about being around longer than MC Chris and nobody gave a shit.

This is a true story.

Oh, you lucky fucking bastards. This was supposed to be my first year at PAX, and I had to go and get my stupid ass pregnant--too pregnant to travel to Seattle and geek nirvana.

I was finally gonna go this year, but it's on Labor Day weekend. Sorry, I go to Bumbershoot every year, rain or shine, dumb bands or whatever.

Thanks for reposting the interview link. I saw this post and I remembered I needed to find that link. And then there it is!

Spore.

Although the Leipzeig footage of the Diablo III, WotLK, and Starcraft III footage would be good too.

So near - yet due to a $100 Bumbershoot ticket - so far ...

Hmm.

Maybe it's because I play games five years out of date - I only bought a GameCube last year, after all - but I've just sort of missed the whole PAX thing. Not like I didn't know it was going on, rather I just said, "Huh," and did something else. It's odd.

@20: You should reconsider. Tons of retro gaming rooms are strewn about the convention center, for example. If you have any affinity for gaming at all, one day of PAX will blow your mind.

@Wizard fans: CALIFORNIA!

Thanks for helping convince me to return the three day PAX badge my studio gave each of us, in case a coworker needs an extra one.

I'm too old for nerd bullshit. God, I need a new/real career.

@21: Well, maybe if someone will bring a copy of The Great Brain Robbery.
