Pot Bash

Hempfest

Seattle's annual celebration of all things pot—from hemp sandals to octo-carb bongs—returns to Myrtle Edwards Park this Saturday and Sunday with live music, featured speakers (Rick Steves both days!), stoned strolling, and, if tradition holds, wonderfully laissez-faire law enforcement. Go, wander, inhale. And should it get too hot or rainy, the newly minted stoner classic The Pineapple Express is playing at the not-too-distant Pacific Place cinema. (Myrtle Edwards Park, 3130 Alaskan Way W, www.hempfest.org. 10 am–8 pm, free.)

I've been going to Hempfest for about 8 years now...I've noticed a seachange in the crowd. It used to be lots of hippies. Now it's mostly teenage kids from the hip hop generation and the festivities have adapted to that. They no longer have the smelly hippies of the past...no drumcircles...no hacky-sac (or very little)...I still go, I love it, but the attitude has changed.

What is the deal with The Stranger? Sure, you talk like you support getting stoned every day, but your actions are missing. First, would it kill you to print on rolling paper instead? I mean, other than monetarily (which really doesn't concern me right now, because I'm a little high and it's making it hard to focus on numbers)? And second, why don't you include those seeds-in-cardboard cutouts that all the hip magazines give out? But instead of a pretty little daisy or sunflower ... (hint hint!).

C'mon!

I happened to be in the Pike Place Market yesterday, and it was hilarious watching all the sunburned, stoned festival-goers trying to find their way out of the basement floors of the market on their way up to downtown. I think some of them might still be wandering around lost down there.

Of course, the one weekend of the year where pot might be as easily accessible in Seattle as it is usually is everywhere else in the country, and I'm trapped in other plans. How I hate your stingy ways, Seattle!
