Vingt sur 20: French Comics

The Alliance Française de Seattle is a nonprofit organization dedicated to spreading Frenchness throughout the region, and those socialist cheese-eaters have finally discovered the way to our hearts: comic books. Fantagraphics Books cofounder Kim Thompson talks about 20 artists who've made French comics among the best in the world, and the slide show is followed by a free reception to kick off a week of French comics-related goodness, including multiple appearances by genius memoirist and comics revolutionary David B. (Alliance Française de Seattle, 4649 Sunnyside Ave N, 632-5433. 7 pm, free.)

There's a good post about this on Shelf Talk, the library blog. David B's Epileptic is amazing, and definitely worth your time if you haven't gotten around to it yet.

Man, are these "Stranger Suggests" posts hard to read! Serif font, lines squished together. I usually don't bother reading them because it hurts my brain.

Just sayin'.

I got into the French language earlier this year by obtaining Persepolis in English and French. It's a great method for learning.

I have found that downloading pornographic picto-fiction in a foreign language can be one of the most entertaining and enlightening methods of instruction. One learns the dirty words. One develops a mastery of the imperative (pinch it! pull it!), the interrogative (how do you like that, bitch?), demonstrative pronouns (that's it! there it is! those are huge! this is hot!) etc.

I never read French comic books.

I only read bandes desinees, because everyone knows comics are for the cretins.
