I thought the speeches were great. Obama and Biden did a great job with their speeches and really let McCain have it without being all smarmy and stupid and mean like the Republicans tend to be.

And the lunatic Hillary Clinton supporters are just crazy and unhinged--dare I say hysterical?--at this point. Honestly, the ones who cannot let go must have some diagnosable mental disorder and should seek help. Soon.

@1 excellent way to get all their votes. Tell them they're nuts, of course they will do what you want. It works every time. Really smart! Really pours the balm on. Very soothing and unity minded.
Also: this technique has worked so well till now, it must be why Obama is fifteen points ahead nationallly and why the poll averages show him 10 poitns ahead in Ohio VA IN CO NV etc. Riiiiiight???

This technique of gaining adherents by insulting them is so well proven in history.

You are displaying the ultimate in emotional intelligence. You know when I think back on it this technique works really well in your personal life, too. "Hey love did you know you're being crazy? God you're insane."

Works like a charm. Keep it up and I'm sure that 15 points Obama lead will grow to that 20 points lead we need to sweep 60+ senate seats and get everything passed.

Unity, god don't you love it?

I'm amazed that enviro oriented Slog is not devoting more typespace to The Green Party's recent nomination of Cynthia McKinney, especially now that Obama betrayed the entire progressive side of his party:

@2-- Maybe you should just accept the fact that no one is going to waste their time groveling on their hands and knees, kissing the tips of your shoes, and begging for your votes. We all know that anyone with any sense is going to vote for him anyway, while the rest of you will write in Hilary and then spend the rest of your miserable lives whining about it.

John Bailo @3, a vote for McKinney is a vote for McCain. Don't throw away your vote.

@6- I thought we had to give all of the Clinton dead-enders foot rubs and boxes of chocolate, just like any other jilted lover.

@2- If people are going to vote for McCain because they think anonymous bloggers are meanies, screw 'em. Honestly, anyone that stupid deserves to get thrown in Gitmo.

Eli, I was totally wrong about Biden. I posted comments on numerous threads saying I was sure it wouldn't be Biden, and insisting Biden was a bad choice. Now all the internets know I'm an idiot.

I still think Biden is a poor choice, but that won't stop me for voting for him.

Go Obama/Biden '08!!!

@3, thanks for sending me to that link. I'm glad at least one party in the US is actually being progressive. The Green Party has a great candidate in Cynthia McKinney, and I will be voting for her come election time (I caucused for Obama back when he was pretending to represent my interests).

A common whinge I've heard lately is "if middle america would vote in their own interests" -- well, I'm going to vote mine. If every progressive does so as well, the Green party might actually be able to get close. It takes a lot of courage to stand up to the group-think and fear-mongering the democrats push, "If you don't vote Obama then McCain will win, and think of the supreme court!" -- Well, I am thinking of the supreme court -- and the environment, the economy, equal rights issues, etc -- and will vote my interests. Obama lied to me about FISA, he lied about his integrity, he lied about his commitment to being an outsider. I suspect he's lying about his supreme court leanings too, and will betray the progessives yet again on that. So you go ahead and vote for the Center -- I'll vote for the Left.

@2. Fuck you. I was called an Obamaton for how fucking long? And then I was called brainwashed or whatever the shit you tools were calling Obama supporters.

I AM about unity with sane people. But these fucks who won't say how the hell they're voting at the roll call? They're delusional Hilltards that don't deserve respect. They've got serious mental issues, and to sit there and say I should respect THEM and their delusional state? Screw that, yo.

And now the Hilltards are just seething that The Queen wasn't properly considered for VP. SHE wasn't properly respected. Fuck that. Hillary Clinton is owed nothing. Not a damn thing. She Who Can Do No Wrong did plenty wrong, and, newsflash, LOST. L.O.S.T. She's owed NOTHING. Not a damn thing.

Cheers and unity,

One last thing, yo. I'm not talking here about the run of the mill Clinton supporters who voted for her but will, by and large, vote for Obama come fall. I understand that there are plenty of sane, normal people who voted for Hillary Clinton. Some of my best friends supported Senator Clinton. And I have a little respect for her, though not for the campaign she (mis)managed.

I'm talking about the Hilltards--the crazy eye supporters who are so filled with a misdirected rage that it would be funny if they weren't taken so seriously. They're delusional. Nonsensical. They deserve no respect. None.

Unity and Peace,

#3: Thanks for being real.

I found that not only is McKinney/Clemente the worthy air of Democratic Liberalism, I think the 25% of the people on the Left who support Green ideas should make the Green Party America's opposition...so, it would be

Republican=mainstream,
Green=Alternative,
Dems=Dying Baby Boomers such as Biden.

Read on what a real alternative would be:

This guy is a GREAT vibe, and was picked for who he will appeal to: white guys in the 'middle' of the country. He might be white-haired, etc. but in no other way does he resemble Lloyd Bentsen, who was old in 88, hand-shakey, vericose-veiny old. And about forty feet taller than Michael Dukakis. Biden rules.

Well the mystery week is over - lots of seemingly smart people like the ending.

Of course NONE of them thought he would be a great candidate when he was in the race. Oh, that little matter.

And the "dream team" is now just down the river campaign hype - though one might ask, if you dare challenge today's status quo, how such a phrase became so common for so many people all over the country for months and months ...millions, tens of millions, silly dreamers. Why would they matter?

90 per cent of the folks who came to think Hillary should carry the flag as number one or number two - they are still convinced she has political talent in spades and leadership they would follow.
It is not irrational but the result of almost two years of debates and hundreds of hours of discussions and thinking.

Here, now all that is not hip. But dreams die hard. Hillary and her supporters are now a shadow opposition whether other folks like that or not. Sort of, no exactly like the British system

If Obama does a Gore and sulks about it all and does not use the Clintons, he will be dead dog in important states. Do we all rememeber Bill Clinton NOT in Florida where he could have charmed that state into big margins for Gore? Instead Gore got his revenge, stay out of sight Bill cause someone doesn't like you, and lost. We all lost. GOD did we all lose.

I'm gay and I suggest in his move to the center, Obama will slow his support on gay issues. His health care proposal is weak and that really concerns me.

Obama's campaign in the last five weeks had made no sense at all. Biden cannot bail him out of a poorly managed aggressive and smart campaign. Candidates run their campaigns ... true to the max ... if you have been around them. I just hope he does not take another vacation, one day breaks only with his kids and wonderful wife in the front page photos, daddy is a great image ...

Games on as one wise Slogger put it - and I'm in.

As I was in for Gore and Kerry. Will this be the third Demo loss of this era? For me and millions of good democrats, leftist democrats, it is beginning to feel like the deja vu of belt way hacks with no populist roots or connections fucking it up - from vibrant messages of change to the same old stuff in a new wrapper.

Didn't work in the last two elections, let's do it again. Shit.

What a joke. Everyone who loves this pick, like @18, needs to wake the fuck up. You love this because he appeals to the center? Hello? Did the conservatives get where they are because they gave a shit what the center thought? No, they redefined the right as the center. The so-called progressives need to take a serious look at what the right has accomplished -- how they've been able to not only redefine what was center as liberal, but also caused the liberals -- who are actually what used to be center -- to pander to the new center, which is what used to be the right.

Yes, celebrate Obama's move to the center - it might win you the election, but it won't win the ideological ground the left ceded in the Nixon/Ford/Reagan/Bush/Clinton years. Yes, Clinton was what used to be conservative. Expansion of the death penalty, NAFTA, DOMA, DODT, DMCA, NATO, etc. Meanwhile, the right will continue to change the narrative on what is conservative. In 20 years, the United States will probably be considering repealing the 1st Amendment, and all the atheists who didn't emigrate will be rounded up and shot.

... course only a male Senator would do ... Gore/Fienstein sure sounded better to me back then, than the Gore/Lieberman that was foisted on us ...

If Mc Cain goes with a woman on his ticket, it is over. Wonder what Cindy is telling sweet John tonight? Rove is smart enough to lobby that move.

Just as Nancy had Ronnie in her grip, I think Cindy has great influence, money helps.

Michelle smiles a lot and I bet she is hell to live with.

I seen you today Hipster. You had a cigarette in one hand and a Stranger in the other. You smelled like stinking cigarette smoke as you puffed away feeding your loser addiction. Your ear lobes were sagging with ear plugs that went out of style five years ago. And those tats? The colors have faded and they are starting to merge into an ugly blob. Didn't you ever notice what tats look like on older men? You thought those fuckers would forever be in style? Would you like to wear the same fucking shirt every day for the rest of your life? And that tat on your neck-it shouts LOSER to everyone who sees it. But being a loser is your thing right? That's why you read the Slog.

So many of the fringe movements (Greens, PUMA's etc) seem to be nothing more than fronts for keeping the GOP in power, Just add some naive followers, and you have a "viable alternative".

Think about it: Greens never do anything except run a presidential candidate every four years. If they were serious, they'd be working from the grassroots, getting greens elected on the state and local level. Aside from a few tokens, we've seen none of that.

PUMA's: Over-hyped by the corporate media, and led by a woman who donated to McCain in the primaries. Just as the Republicans planted people to spy on enviro groups and start trouble at protests in the past, who's to say that this isn't more of the same? Again, a few leaders with a hidden agenda, and some naive neurotics following blindly.

Nader and his simple-minded soundbyte of "Both parties are the same". Karl Rove could not ask for a better slogan heading into this election: Both parties are the same, so you might as well vote for the one with the white guy.

People who expect a presidential candidate to be some sort of saint, who is custom ordered to their particular taste, is a fool. You have to be ruthless to make it to the top, and you have to move to the center. You might as well pick the candidate who is going to be ruthless for your side.

#23: "So many of the fringe movements (Greens, PUMA's etc) seem to be nothing more than fronts for keeping the GOP in power"

Sure, but you can same thing about the Democrats.

I think it makes more sense for the moderates in the Rebs and Dems to converge on the Republican side and become what the old Democrat party used to be: populist and mainstream and working class.

Then, the more edgy elements can have a real playground, the Green Party. Or the Social Conservative Party....

this is the only place in America where the Green party is even noted ...totally not important... Nader is grasping a sliver of attention, he is so off the edge.

The chore is to be smart and stop Mc Cain and at the present moment, Biden or not, Obama's campaign is stalled and not working.

Obama is in he news DOES NOT EQUAL new and increasing voter strength. Sorry this is not the dating game, but, winning an election.

He is stalled - revile Mc Cain all you want, he is closing the gap.

And all the hacks that have lost the last two national elections are on his payroll - welfare state of hacks.

I am worried. And now the burden seems to be Hillary to the rescue ... at this convention she must do a whole list of things for the Party all the while pretending she has little power, influence or brains. After all, somebody don't like her... irony indeed.

NATIONAL POLLING FROM NBC this am shows Hillary beating MCain by a bigger margin than Obama ... oh well, let's play pretend right into defeat.

Obama peaked two months ago ... post conventions the devil will have set the future. I am worried.
